Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a single-player, story-forward tactical RPG built around a returning investigator, a city divided by class, and battles you can pause to direct. It is a good fit if you want a fully voiced fantasy mystery with party positioning and elemental combo attacks; it is less suited to players seeking multiplayer or evidence of extensive branching choices.
What is Masquerada: Songs and Shadows?
Developed by Witching Hour Studios and published by Ysbryd Games, Masquerada: Songs and Shadows first released on September 30, 2016. Steam classifies it as a single-player tactical RPG. Its setting is Citte della Ombre, a fictional city inspired by Renaissance Italy, where magical masks and class inequality shape the world.
You play as Cicero Gavar, an exiled investigator who returns to look into the kidnapping of diplomat Razitof Azrus. The premise puts the emphasis on a central investigation and its characters rather than on a documented web of player-driven story branches. Steam’s game listing describes the narrative as fully voiced and advertises roughly 12 hours of story; that duration is a publisher/storefront estimate, not a measured guarantee of playtime.
How does combat work?
Combat combines real-time action with tactical pausing. You can pause to reposition party members and plan attacks, then resume the fight. The distinctive system is elemental tagging: apply one elemental effect to an enemy and activate it with another element to trigger a combination effect. That gives battles a planning layer beyond simply attacking, though the available evidence does not establish how deep or varied the system remains across the entire game.

- BY THE NUMBERS: The Phantom of the Opera is a 2-player trick-taking game from 25th Century Games, ages 14 and up.
The visual presentation aims to keep busy encounters readable. Steam reproduces a Kotaku UK excerpt praising the comic-inspired art as easy to read even amid effects such as ice, earth fissures, and swarming weaponised fragments. That is a publication-attributed excerpt shown on the store page, not an independently verified full review here.
What is the story and presentation like?
The appeal is the mix of a stylized fantasy city, political intrigue, tragedy, and a voiced investigation. Store copy highlights comic-inspired environmental art and stylized 3D characters; players who enjoy lore-rich settings and a guided narrative are the clearest audience. It is not established here that choices substantially alter the plot, so approach it as a story-led RPG rather than a branching narrative game.

The Steam listing also reproduces an Observer excerpt calling the game “a delight” and associating it with a four-star rating. These excerpts offer a glimpse of published praise, but they do not amount to a comprehensive critic-review record or a current critical consensus.
Is Masquerada: Songs and Shadows worth playing?
Consider it if you want an accessible tactical layer without giving up a strong story focus: pausing lets you manage positioning and combos at your own pace, while the fully voiced presentation supports the investigation at the center of the game. The trade-off is that this is presented as a single-player, narrative-led experience; the available evidence does not support recommending it for multiplayer, extensive choice-driven storytelling, or unusually deep tactical complexity.

Steam showed “Very Positive,” with 88% positive from 348 user reviews in a listing snapshot accessed in 2026. That is a dated, changeable Steam user-review figure—not a critic score or a dependable permanent rating—so treat it as a platform snapshot rather than a verdict for every player.
