How to Embed a Video in a WordPress Post (YouTube, Vimeo, or Your Own File)

Insert an Embed block, paste a supported video URL, and click Embed—or use WordPress’s Video block for a file you upload or select from the Media Library. This guide covers YouTube, Vimeo, responsive settings, accessibility, permissions, and troubleshooting.

In the WordPress block editor, the fastest way to add a hosted video is to insert an Embed block, paste the video page URL, and click Embed. WordPress then converts a supported address into the service’s video block. If the video file is on your computer or in your Media Library, use a Video block instead. You do not have to upload a video that is hosted on a service such as YouTube or Vimeo.

This guide explains which method fits each situation, the exact steps for YouTube, Vimeo, external URLs, and WordPress-hosted files, and what to check when an embed fails or looks wrong on phones.

What “embedding” a video means in WordPress

An embedded video is displayed inside your post while the video file remains on another service. Your WordPress page contains an embedded player supplied by that service, rather than a second copy of the video stored in your site’s Media Library. A visitor can watch a gameplay clip, trailer, or tutorial without leaving the post.

WordPress also supports a native Video block. That option is for a file you want WordPress to serve from your own site, whether you upload it during editing, select it from the Media Library, or provide a direct media URL. The choice is therefore mainly about where the file is hosted and how much control you need over its player and settings.

Choose the right method before inserting anything

Use an external embed when the video already lives on a supported platform and you want that platform to deliver the playback. Use the native Video block when the file belongs on your WordPress installation or when you need the controls available for a self-hosted file.

Question External Embed block Native Video block
Where is the video stored? On a supported third-party video service. On your WordPress site, in the Media Library, or at a direct video URL.
What do you paste? The video’s page URL, such as the URL copied from its sharing menu. A file selected with Upload or Media Library, or a direct media URL with Insert from URL.
What can prevent playback? The service may restrict embedding, require a public or unlisted status, or block playback in a country. The file’s URL or availability must remain valid; the video is served through the WordPress video block.
How much setup is required? Insert the service block, paste the URL, and select Embed. Insert Video, then choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL.
Responsive behavior YouTube and Vimeo blocks provide media settings that can preserve the aspect ratio as the browser narrows. The Video block provides its own player settings; test the post at phone width before publishing.
Accessibility tools Use the controls exposed by the selected service block and provide context in the surrounding post. The native Video block supports captions and text tracks, allowing you to supply a text alternative when the content needs one.

For a gaming site, an external embed is usually the simplest choice for a trailer or a clip already published on a video platform. A self-hosted Video block is more appropriate when you control the file and want it delivered from your own WordPress site.

Prepare the video URL

Open the video’s page on its hosting service and copy the page address. Copy the URL itself rather than text surrounding it. If the service offers several sharing formats, use the normal video-page URL first; WordPress can transform a supported URL into the appropriate block.

Check the video’s permission before editing the post. A link that works for you while logged in may not be playable for readers if the video is private, restricted to an account, or blocked in the viewer’s country. For YouTube, public and unlisted videos can be embedded, but private videos cannot. The publisher must also permit embedding.

How to use the generic Embed block

The generic Embed block is useful when you know the URL belongs to a service supported by WordPress but do not need a service-specific block immediately.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Open the post in the WordPress block editor.
  2. Click the + Block Inserter, search for Embed, and select it. You can also place the cursor in a new paragraph and type /embed, then choose the Embed block from the suggestions.
  3. Paste the video page URL into the field in the block.
  4. Click Embed.
  5. Wait for the preview to appear. Use the editor’s Preview command to check the front-end version before publishing.

When WordPress recognizes the address, it replaces the generic placeholder with the service’s embed presentation. The block may expose alignment or media controls after the preview loads. If the address is not recognized, the editor can offer Convert to link; that creates a clickable link instead of an in-page player.

When the generic block is the best choice

  • You have a supported video URL and want the shortest workflow.
  • You are unsure which service-specific block to select.
  • You want WordPress to identify the provider from the URL.

If you need provider-specific controls or the generic block does not recognize the address, insert the named service block instead.

How to embed a YouTube video

YouTube has its own block in the block editor. You do not need a YouTube account to embed a video. The video still has to be embeddable: the owner must allow embedding, and country restrictions can prevent some visitors from watching it.

WordPress.org, YouTube Embed documentation

  1. Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to show.
  2. In the post editor, click the + Block Inserter and add a YouTube Embed block.
  3. Paste the URL into the block’s field.
  4. Click Embed.
  5. Confirm that the thumbnail or player preview is the intended video, then open Preview to test the published layout.

YouTube permissions to check

A public video is available for ordinary embedding. An unlisted video can also be embedded, but readers need the correct link to reach it. A private video cannot be embedded for general readers. The publisher’s setting must allow embedding, and a geographic restriction can make the player unavailable in particular countries even when the block itself was inserted correctly.

Fixing a changed or incorrect YouTube URL

Select the YouTube block and use Edit URL when the original address was copied incorrectly, the video was changed, or you want to replace it with another clip. Paste the corrected URL and submit it. If the block still cannot load the video, verify the owner’s embedding permission and the video’s public or unlisted status before changing the post.

How to embed a Vimeo video

For Vimeo, insert a Vimeo Embed block and use the URL of a public Vimeo video. The block includes alignment controls and a media setting that can preserve the video’s aspect ratio as the available width becomes smaller.

  1. Copy the URL of the public Vimeo video.
  2. Open the WordPress post and choose the + Block Inserter.
  3. Search for and insert Vimeo Embed.
  4. Paste the URL and click Embed.
  5. Check the loaded preview and then use Preview to inspect the front-end page.

If you replace the video later, select Edit URL in the block and submit the new public Vimeo address. If the URL is not accepted, try the standard video-page URL rather than a copied fragment or an address that requires a viewer to sign in.

How to add a file with the native Video block

Use the native Video block when the video file should be served from WordPress or when you already have a direct media URL. This is a different workflow from embedding a page hosted by YouTube or Vimeo.

  1. Place the cursor where the player should appear in the post.
  2. Click the + Block Inserter and choose Video.
  3. Choose one of the block’s sources:
    • Upload to select a video file from your computer.
    • Media Library to select a file that is already stored in WordPress.
    • Insert from URL to provide a direct URL to the video file.
  4. Wait for the player preview to load and review the block’s available settings.
  5. Use the editor’s Preview command to confirm that the player appears correctly on the front end.

A supported video-page URL such as a YouTube address may be transformed into a YouTube embed block when entered through the appropriate insertion flow. If your intention is to host the file yourself, select the Video block and provide the file through Upload or Media Library instead of relying on that transformation.

Captions and text tracks

The native Video block supports captions and text tracks. Add them when the spoken content, important sound cues, or instructions need a text alternative. Captions make a gameplay explanation, walkthrough, or accessibility demonstration usable by people who cannot hear the audio and help readers follow the video when sound is unavailable.

Make the player responsive

Open the post at more than one viewport size before publishing. A video that looks correct in the editor can occupy a different width in the site’s content column, and a wide player can be difficult to use on a phone if its aspect ratio is not preserved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube and Vimeo blocks expose media settings intended to preserve aspect ratio as the browser becomes narrower, including on phones. Turn on the relevant media behavior offered by the block, then use front-end Preview and resize the browser or test on a phone. Look for a player that remains inside the content area, does not force horizontal scrolling, and keeps its controls visible.

Alignment choices also depend on the active theme. Wide and full-width options appear only when the theme supports them. If those choices are missing, the block may still be working normally; use the alignment options that the theme exposes rather than expecting every theme to offer full-width media.

Embedding versus uploading: practical trade-offs

Use an external embed when

  • The video is already published on a supported service.
  • You want to avoid storing another copy in WordPress.
  • The service’s sharing and privacy settings match your audience.
  • You are adding several large clips and prefer not to make WordPress the delivery location for each file.

Use the Video block when

  • You own the file and want it in the WordPress Media Library.
  • You need the native block’s caption and text-track support.
  • You have a direct media URL and do not need a provider-specific player.
  • The video should remain associated with your site rather than a public or unlisted page on another service.

Neither route is automatically better. External hosting reduces the upload step but leaves playback dependent on the provider’s permissions and regional availability. A WordPress-hosted file gives you a direct file source and native video-block controls, while making your site responsible for storing and delivering that file.

Troubleshoot a video that will not embed

The editor says the content cannot be embedded

First check that you copied a supported video-page URL and that it contains no extra text. Try the standard URL from the provider’s share or address bar. If WordPress still rejects it, insert the relevant service-specific block and paste the URL there. When embedding is not possible, choose Convert to link so readers can open the video on its hosting service instead of leaving a broken block in the post.

The YouTube block loads but playback is unavailable

Confirm that the video is public or unlisted rather than private. Ask the publisher to verify that Allow embedding is enabled. If the video is unavailable only to readers in certain locations, a country restriction is likely; changing the WordPress block cannot remove a restriction imposed by the video publisher.

The wrong video appears

Select the block and choose Edit URL. Replace the address with the intended video URL, submit it, and verify the preview. This is safer than deleting surrounding post content and recreating the entire block.

The player is too wide or breaks the mobile layout

Check the block’s media settings for aspect-ratio preservation and use the available alignment controls. Then open the front-end Preview at a narrow width. Wide and full-width controls may not be available because the active theme does not support them, not because the video itself is faulty.

The video works in the editor but not in Preview

Use the front-end Preview rather than relying only on the editor canvas. Recheck the URL, test the video while signed out of the hosting service, and confirm that its visibility and embedding permissions allow ordinary readers to watch it. If the embed still fails, use Convert to link or provide the file through the native Video block when you control the media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Publishing checklist

  • The block contains the intended video URL or file.
  • The preview shows the correct thumbnail or player.
  • External videos are public or unlisted as appropriate, and the publisher allows embedding.
  • You have considered country restrictions for viewers of a YouTube video.
  • The player stays within the content column on a phone-sized screen.
  • Aspect-ratio media settings are enabled where the YouTube or Vimeo block provides them.
  • Captions or text tracks are attached to a native Video block when the content needs a text alternative.
  • The selected alignment is supported by the active theme.
  • If an embed is unsupported, the post uses a working link rather than a broken placeholder.

A quick decision path

  1. If the video is already on YouTube or Vimeo, insert the matching block, paste the page URL, and select Embed.
  2. If you know the URL is from a supported service but do not need provider-specific controls, use the generic Embed block or the /embed shortcut.
  3. If the file is on your computer, in the Media Library, or at a direct media URL, use the Video block and choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL.
  4. If the block cannot load, correct the URL, confirm the provider’s visibility and embedding permissions, and use Edit URL or Convert to link as appropriate.
  5. Preview the post at desktop and phone widths before publishing.
