To move a Windows PC world into a Space Engineers dedicated server, stop the server, copy the complete world folder from %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamID><WorldName>, and upload that folder to the server’s configured Saves directory. Self-hosted servers normally use %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves; managed hosts usually provide a panel file manager or FTP/SFTP path. Preserve the folder structure, follow the host’s naming convention, then start the server and verify the world before inviting players.

What you are actually moving
A Space Engineers world is a folder, not a single .sbs file. The folder contains the terrain, grids, player ownership, settings, and references to mods. A typical save includes files such as SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs, Sandbox.sbc, and Sandbox_config.sbc, along with other files created by the game.

The important details are the complete folder and the destination server’s own Saves location. Uploading only one file, or placing the folder at the wrong level, can make the server create a new world instead of loading yours.
Before you begin
- Windows PC save: The file path below applies to a PC installation using the standard Windows AppData location.
- Dedicated server access: You need administrator access to the self-hosted machine or file-manager/FTP/SFTP access from your hosting provider.
- Server stopped: Stop the destination server before replacing or uploading its world.
- Enough storage and transfer time: Large worlds can contain substantial files, and an FTP upload may take time.
- Compatible game and mods: The server must be able to use the game version and mod set referenced by the save.
- A backup: Keep a copy of both the original local folder and the server’s current world before making changes.
A player-hosted world is different from a dedicated server: a player-hosted session normally stops when its host exits, while a dedicated server runs independently. Uploading the save changes where the world runs; it does not change the save’s ownership or automatically resolve incompatible mods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBack up the existing world first
Replacing a destination folder can permanently hide the progress currently on the server. Make the backup while the server is stopped.
- Stop the dedicated server from its service controls, command line, or hosting panel.
- Copy the server’s current world folder to a separate local directory or another safe storage location. Keep the original folder name and all of its contents.
- Also copy the local world you intend to upload before editing or renaming it.
- Label the backups with the date and world name so you can identify the pre-migration version.
Steam Cloud is not a substitute for a world backup. Keen’s backup guidance recommends preserving the relevant local Saves folder; publishing a world to Workshop as private or unlisted is another way to retain or share a copy. A normal file copy is usually the simplest recovery method because it keeps the complete folder structure used by the server.

Find your local Space Engineers save
Use the Windows path
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and enter
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves, then press Enter. The variable opens your roaming AppData directory even if your Windows user folder has a different name. - Open the folder with your numeric Steam ID.
- Open the folder named for the world you want to migrate.
The final folder is the one to copy. Do not copy only the numeric Steam-ID directory, and do not select a file inside the world folder in place of the folder itself.
Confirm that you have the right world
If several saves have similar names, open the folders and compare their modification dates and contents. You can also launch the intended world locally and save it once immediately before shutting the game down; that gives the folder a current timestamp and ensures the latest changes have been written.
Keep the world folder’s internal layout unchanged. At its top level you should see the save files directly, rather than another identically named folder containing them. This distinction matters when a compressed archive is extracted: some archive tools create an extra outer directory.
Upload to a self-managed dedicated server
On a standard self-hosted installation, dedicated-server worlds are normally read from %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves. The exact location can differ if you created a separate server instance, changed the service account, or selected a custom data path. Use the instance’s configured Saves directory rather than assuming it is under your personal Windows profile.

- Stop the server. Confirm that its process and service have stopped so no save files are being written while you copy them.
- Open the configured destination. Navigate to the server instance’s
SpaceEngineersDedicatedSavesdirectory, or the customSavespath specified by that installation. - Back up the current destination folder. Rename it with a date or copy it elsewhere before replacing it.
- Transfer the complete local world folder. Copy the folder from
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamID><WorldName>into the server’sSavesdirectory. A network share, removable drive, or archive transfer all work as long as the final extracted structure is unchanged. - Check the resulting path. The save files should be immediately inside the uploaded world folder. Avoid a path such as
SavesWorldNameWorldNameSandbox.sbcunless that is intentionally how the server was configured. - Set the server’s world selection if necessary. Some installations load a selected world by folder name or by a value in the dedicated-server configuration. Make that value match the folder you uploaded.
- Start the server and inspect the log or console. Wait for the world to finish loading before connecting.
If the server service runs under a different Windows account, its AppData location may not be the same as the administrator’s. In that case, rely on the instance’s configured data directory and confirm where that service account stores Saves.
Upload through a managed hosting panel or FTP
Managed providers expose different interfaces, but the migration sequence is consistent: stop, back up, replace, name correctly, and start. A common provider layout uses /config/Saves/ as the destination.
- Stop the server in the provider panel. Do not upload over a running world.
- Open the file manager or connect with FTP/SFTP. Navigate to the provider’s configured
Savesdirectory, commonly shown as/config/Saves/. - Preserve the current server world. Download it or rename it before deleting anything. Deleting the existing folder can remove the server’s current progress from the active path.
- Upload the entire local world folder. Upload the folder itself, not just
Sandbox.sbcor.sbsfiles. If you upload an archive, extract it so the provider sees the expected folder and files. - Apply the provider’s folder-name convention. Some services require the uploaded folder to be named
World. Others use the folder’s original name or a value configured inSpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. Follow the convention shown in that provider’s control panel. - Check permissions and transfer completion. Make sure the upload finished and that the server account can read the files.
- Start the server. Watch the startup output, then connect and verify the migrated world.
When mods are installed, some hosting instructions specifically require the World Name entry in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg to match the uploaded folder name. A mismatch can cause the service to load a different save or generate a fresh one even when the files are present.
Folder names and configuration: the detail that decides what loads
There is no single naming rule shared by every host. Treat the folder name and the server configuration as a pair:

| Environment | Likely destination | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed dedicated server | %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves, or the instance’s custom path |
Which instance and Windows account run the service; the selected world name |
| Managed panel | Provider-defined Saves directory, often under /config/ |
Whether the folder must be called World or retain its original name |
| FTP/SFTP-managed host | The same provider-defined directory reached through the file-transfer client | That the folder is not nested one level too deep and that configuration points to it |
Do not rename files such as Sandbox.sbc or Sandbox_config.sbc. If a host requires a particular outer folder name, rename only that folder and update the corresponding server setting if the host’s instructions require it.

Start-up verification checklist
After the first launch, verify the migration before allowing normal play:
- World identity: The expected world name, environment, and map features appear rather than a blank default map.
- Grid and block state: Important ships, stations, and recent construction are present.
- Player ownership: Your character and faction ownership are intact. If ownership is missing, stop before making changes that could overwrite the save again.
- Settings: Difficulty, inventory, progression, experimental options, and other world rules match what you intended.
- Mods: The server’s active mod list corresponds to the save’s references, and no required mod is reported missing.
- Persistence: Join, make a harmless change, leave, restart the server, and confirm that the change remains. This tests that the server is saving to the uploaded world rather than a newly generated directory.
If any of these checks fails, stop the server and troubleshoot from the backup. Continuing to play in a newly generated world can make it harder to distinguish the original save from the replacement.
Troubleshoot a world that will not load
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The server starts a new or blank world | Wrong destination, wrong folder name, or a nested folder | Stop the server; confirm the configured Saves path, ensure the save files sit directly inside the world folder, and match the configured world name. |
| The uploaded files are visible but ignored | Only the contents were copied, or the outer folder is one level too deep | Restore the expected folder structure: SavesWorldNameSandbox.sbc, not SavesSandbox.sbc and not an unintended second WorldName directory. |
| Previous server progress disappeared | The destination folder was deleted or overwritten | Stop the server and restore the pre-migration backup. Do not rely on an automatic rollback. |
| World settings differ from the local game | The save’s Sandbox_config.sbc and dedicated-server configuration interact |
Compare the active server settings with the save configuration after the first launch. Change one setting at a time and keep a backup before testing. |
| A modded world fails or loads with missing content | Missing, unavailable, or incompatible mods; different game/server version | Compare the server’s mod list with the local world, make required mods available, and confirm that the server and client versions are compatible before altering save files. |
| The panel says the upload succeeded but the server cannot read it | Transfer incomplete, wrong permissions, or an archive was not extracted correctly | Check file sizes and timestamps, reconnect with the panel or FTP/SFTP client, extract the archive into the intended directory, and verify read access for the server account. |
| The correct folder exists but another world loads | World Name or an equivalent selection setting points elsewhere |
Match the configuration value to the uploaded folder name, then restart with the server stopped during the change. |
Mods, versions, and configuration compatibility
Copying files does not make an incompatible world compatible. A save records its mod references and depends on game behavior available when it was created. Before troubleshooting the file transfer itself, compare:
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- the dedicated server’s game build with the build used to create or last save the world;
- the server’s enabled mod list with the world and its required dependencies;
- the server’s configured world name and other dedicated-server options;
- the save’s
Sandbox_config.sbcand any settings the provider panel applies at launch.
Change one variable at a time. If a world loads correctly without a particular mod but fails when it is enabled, restore the backup and investigate that mod’s availability or version rather than repeatedly replacing the entire save.
Self-hosted server versus managed hosting
Both approaches can run the same uploaded world, but the operational work differs.
| Consideration | Self-managed server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| File control | Direct access to the machine and its configured AppData or instance path | Provider panel, file manager, or FTP/SFTP access |
| World location | Usually the instance’s SpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves |
Provider-defined directory, often under /config/Saves/ |
| Naming | Controlled by the server instance and configuration | May require a fixed folder such as World or a matching World Name value |
| Backup and restore | You control copies, storage, and scheduling | You must use the provider’s download, backup, or file-transfer tools |
| Mod management | You install and maintain the server’s files and settings | The panel may simplify configuration, but provider limits still apply |
| Availability | Depends on your hardware, network, and maintenance | The provider keeps the service online independently of your gaming PC, subject to its service operation |
Choose the workflow based on who controls the files. The save-transfer steps remain the same; only the destination path, access method, and naming rule change.
A repeatable migration checklist
- Save and exit the local world.
- Copy the complete folder from
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamID><WorldName>. - Stop the destination server.
- Back up its current world folder.
- Open the server’s configured
Savesdirectory. - Upload or copy the complete world folder without changing its internal files.
- Apply the required outer folder name and matching configuration value.
- Check that the save files are not nested an extra level.
- Start the server and wait for a complete load.
- Verify the map, grids, ownership, settings, mods, and persistence.
- Keep the original backups until the migrated server has survived a restart and normal play.
Final result
The reliable migration pattern is simple: a stopped server, a complete world folder, the correct Saves directory, and a matching folder/configuration name. Back up before replacing anything, verify the path after uploading, and test the world after a restart. Those checks prevent the two most common failures—loading a blank world and losing the server’s previous progress—without altering the save’s contents.
