Set the PS5 game preset to Performance Mode at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, then check the game’s own graphics settings. This can favor smoother motion, but it does not force every game to run at 60 fps. To inspect the console’s current display connection, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
Choose Performance Mode on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, then choose Performance Mode.
- Launch the game and, if available, select its performance, frame-rate, or graphics-mode option. The name and availability of this setting vary by game.
Sony describes Performance Mode as making game motion smoother, while Resolution Mode prioritizes higher graphics quality. This preset applies only to PS5 games that offer those modes; it is a preference, not a universal frame-rate switch. Sony’s guide to customizing PS5 game presets explains the setting and its limits.
Check the PS5’s video output and connected display
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the current video output signal and the information shown for the connected HDMI device. The PS5 detects the display’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; you can also change resolution in this menu. See Sony’s PS5 resolution guide.
A 60 fps target does not require a 120 Hz display. The console’s 120 Hz output option concerns 120 Hz video for supported displays and games. A 60 Hz-capable display can serve a 60 fps target, although the game itself must offer or achieve that frame rate.

Understand the difference between frame rate and refresh rate
- Frames per second (fps) describes how many frames a game renders each second.
- Refresh rate (Hz) describes how often the display refreshes its image each second.
- A display’s refresh-rate capability does not make a game render at that rate. The game’s modes and performance determine its frame rate.
For that reason, Video Output is useful for checking the display connection and signal, but it does not by itself confirm that a particular game is rendering at 60 fps. Consult the game’s own settings or documentation for its supported modes.
Troubleshoot a missing 4K at 120 Hz signal
These checks apply when you are trying to use 4K at 120 Hz; they are not prerequisites for ordinary 60 fps gameplay.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s graphical output. Sony describes this for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors on its PS5 features page. Support and behavior depend on the display and game. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) also requires a compatible TV.
