Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia II: Definitive Edition are two different stories and two different kinds of release—not equivalent PS5 editions. The first is a remake with a dedicated PS5 version that 2K says supports 60 FPS gameplay and improved loading. The second is a remastered version of the sequel sold as PS4 software that PlayStation lists as playable on PS5, with a compatibility caveat.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition: Vito Scaletta in Empire Bay
The sequel shifts to post-World War II Empire Bay and follows Vito Scaletta, a war hero who becomes involved with the mob to deal with his father’s debts. His friend Joe is part of the story. The broader series timeline places the game across the 1940s and 1950s. PlayStation · Series timeline
That makes the choice partly about which crime saga you want: the earlier origin story in Lost Heaven, or the postwar sequel in Empire Bay. You do not need to treat the Definitive Editions as alternate versions of one game; they tell separate chapters with different leads and eras.

What each version means on PS5
Mafia: Definitive Edition has a PS5 version
2K Support announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version launched on August 14, 2026. 2K describes it as the same 2020 game with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements, specifically improved loading times and fixes for some legacy issues. The 60 FPS figure is the publisher’s stated support, not an independently measured result. 2K Support
PlayStation’s US product listing offers the game for PS4 and PS5 and lists PS5 features including DualSense vibration and adaptive trigger support, offline play, and one-player play. It also labels the listing PS5 Pro Enhanced. These store-page labels describe availability and features; they do not establish how the game compares technically with Mafia II. PlayStation

Mafia II: Definitive Edition is PS4 software playable on PS5
PlayStation’s US listing labels Mafia II: Definitive Edition as a PS4 game playable on PS5 and cautions that some PS4 features may be absent. The reviewed official sources do not describe a native PS5 release or publish a frame-rate claim for this title. That is a limit of the available official listing information, not proof that no later update could exist. PlayStation
So, if your priority is a release explicitly presented with a PS5 version and publisher-stated 60 FPS gameplay, Mafia: Definitive Edition is the clearer fit. If your priority is Vito’s sequel and its included DLC, Mafia II: Definitive Edition remains playable on PS5 through the PS4 version. The official sources do not provide a controlled same-console comparison of graphics, bugs, or performance, so they do not establish an overall visual or technical winner.

Buying or upgrading: what the official information establishes
The PS5 upgrade for existing Mafia: Definitive Edition owners had a cutoff
2K said that owners of a physical or digital PS4 copy of Mafia: Definitive Edition, whether standalone or included in the Trilogy, who purchased it before August 14, 2026, received the digital PS5 version for free. That was a specific eligibility window; it should not be read as a free upgrade offer for new purchases after that date. The announcement does not extend this upgrade claim to Mafia II. 2K Support
The physical Trilogy is a route to both stories
2K/Take-Two announced a physical Mafia: Trilogy edition, and PlayStation’s series page covers the included entries and their settings. It is a relevant option if you want to collect the series or play both stories, but the existence of a physical Trilogy edition does not mean its disc supplies native PS5 versions of both games. Availability and current stock are not established by the announcement. PlayStation · Take-Two

Which one should you play?
- Choose Mafia: Definitive Edition for Tommy Angelo’s 1930s Lost Heaven story, a remake of the original game, and the title with a dedicated PS5 version and 2K-stated 60 FPS gameplay.
- Choose Mafia II: Definitive Edition for Vito Scaletta’s postwar Empire Bay story, the sequel’s main game plus all DLC, and PS5 play through the PS4 version listed by PlayStation.
- Play both if you want the series’ change in era and protagonist from the 1930s origin story to the 1940s–50s sequel. Their releases are not interchangeable, and the official sources do not support a broad claim that one has better image quality or fewer bugs.
