Check your edition first, then use the matching instructions below.
Java Edition: enable or disable a mod
Java mods are third-party files loaded by a compatible setup such as Fabric or Forge. They are not the same system as Bedrock add-ons. Minecraft Support says, “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” Minecraft Support’s Java mod guidance also describes mods as content that can change gameplay.
Enable a mod
- Confirm you are launching Java Edition and identify which loader the mod requires, such as Fabric or Forge.
- Check that the mod matches both your Minecraft version and loader. Install any libraries or other dependencies named by the mod. Fabric warns that a mod made for one Minecraft version may not work on another; Forge mod metadata can specify required dependencies.
- Close Minecraft. Put the mod file in the
modsfolder used by the loader profile you intend to launch. Fabric documents this folder, and Forge identifies themodsfolder in a Forge-enabled setup as the location for mod files. - Launch the matching loader profile and check that the mod works as expected.

Disable one mod
- Exit Minecraft.
- Move that mod’s file out of the active profile’s
modsfolder. Keep a copy elsewhere if you may want to restore it. - Launch the same profile again and verify the result.
This is the practical inverse of placing a mod file in the folder; it is not a Minecraft Support procedure. If you installed mods through a manager, use its toggle if available, since controls vary between managers. Removing a mod file disables that mod, but it does not necessarily switch the game to vanilla: the launcher may still start the loader profile with no mods installed.

Bedrock Edition: enable or disable an add-on
Bedrock uses Add-Ons rather than Java’s mod-loader system. An add-on can include a resource pack, a behavior pack, or both. Resource packs affect presentation; behavior packs change gameplay behavior. Microsoft explains the edition and pack distinctions in its Bedrock and Java Edition comparison.
Enable an add-on for a world
- For a new world, open its creation settings. For an existing world, open that world’s settings.
- Under Add-Ons, open Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs, depending on what the add-on contains.
- Select the pack and activate it for that world. If the add-on has both pack types, activate the relevant resource and behavior packs.

Disable an add-on
- Open the settings for the world where the add-on is active.
- Go to the corresponding Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs section under Add-Ons.
- Deactivate the pack you want to turn off. If the add-on uses both pack types, check both sections and disable the relevant packs.
Pack activation is per world, so changing one world’s pack settings does not by itself change another world’s setup.
Resolve mod or add-on problems
Java: check compatibility and conflicts
If a Java mod does not load or the game has problems, check the edition, loader, Minecraft version, and any required libraries first. Then consider conflicts with other installed mods. Change files only after closing the game; test with the smallest set of mods needed to identify the cause.

Bedrock: isolate pack issues
Minecraft Support identifies add-on conflicts and resource- or behavior-pack problems as possible causes of game issues. Disable packs from the affected world’s settings, then reactivate them deliberately to isolate the problem. If the issue returns after a particular pack is enabled, investigate that pack or its interaction with the others. Before changing or removing a mod or pack that affects world content, make a copy of the world if you want a recovery option. This is a sensible precaution, not a stated Minecraft Support requirement; content changes can affect gameplay or what appears in a world.
