On a supported Apple-silicon Mac, Game Mode normally turns on automatically when a compatible game enters macOS’s built-in full-screen mode. You do not generally enable it from System Settings first. In macOS Tahoe 26, check it through Game Overlay; in macOS Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15, use the Game menu.
Game Mode requires an Apple-silicon Mac, macOS Sonoma 14 or later, and a game that supports macOS full screen. Apple’s official requirements and controls are the definitive reference.

What Game Mode does on Mac
Game Mode is a built-in macOS performance-prioritization feature, not a separate app or graphics preset. When active, macOS gives the game higher priority for CPU and GPU resources and reduces the resources assigned to background tasks.

That can reduce input and audio latency. Compatibility and behavior can vary by controller and game.

These changes may improve frame-rate consistency and responsiveness, but they do not guarantee higher FPS. Game Mode does not upgrade your hardware, increase graphics quality automatically, replace in-game resolution or quality settings, fix network lag, or solve every poorly optimized port or compatibility-layer problem.
Keep Game Mode separate from Gaming Focus: Game Mode prioritizes gaming resources and wireless responsiveness, while Gaming Focus filters notifications and other distractions. Apple says Gaming Focus turns on by default when a wireless gaming controller is connected, subject to your Focus settings and supported-device behavior. See Apple’s explanation of both features.
Check whether your Mac supports Game Mode
- Processor: Your Mac must use Apple silicon, such as an M-series chip. Intel Macs are outside Apple’s stated Game Mode requirements.
- Operating system: You need macOS Sonoma 14 or later, including Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26.
- Game: The game must support macOS’s built-in full-screen mode.
That last requirement matters. A game’s internal Fullscreen, Exclusive Fullscreen, or Borderless Windowed option is not necessarily the same as macOS full screen. The safest test is whether the game exposes the standard macOS full-screen control—the green button in the window’s top-left corner—or a control that invokes that mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to turn on Game Mode automatically
- Launch the game normally.
- Use the standard macOS green full-screen button, or the game’s control that enters macOS full screen.
- Wait for the game to occupy its own full-screen Space.
- Verify Game Mode using the instructions for your macOS version below.
If the game only imitates full screen inside its own rendering engine, macOS may not recognize it as eligible. This can happen with some borderless-window configurations, compatibility tools, emulators, streaming clients, or third-party launchers; eligibility depends on how macOS identifies the running application, not simply on whether the image fills the display.

How to use Game Mode in macOS Tahoe 26
- Put the game into macOS full screen.
- Press Command–Escape to open Game Overlay. You can also move the pointer to the top of the screen and click the Game icon in the menu bar.
- Open Settings.
- Select Game Mode to turn it on or off.
Command–Escape opens Game Overlay; it is not itself a universal Game Mode toggle. Tahoe’s gaming features, including Game Overlay, are described in Apple’s macOS Tahoe announcement.
How to use Game Mode in macOS Sequoia 15 or Sonoma 14
- Enter macOS full screen in the game.
- Move the pointer to the top of the display to reveal the menu bar.
- Click the Game menu.
- Choose Turn Game Mode On or Turn Game Mode Off.
The Game menu normally appears while an eligible game is in macOS full screen. Game Mode is not generally a permanent, system-wide switch in System Settings.
How turning Game Mode off works
Leaving full screen or quitting the game turns Game Mode off for that session. However, if you explicitly choose Turn Game Mode Off, Apple says that choice remains associated with that game until you manually turn Game Mode on again. Simply reopening the game may not restore it.
To reverse the choice, reopen the game, enter macOS full screen, open the Game menu or Tahoe’s Game Overlay, and select the option to turn Game Mode on.

Game Mode is missing or will not activate
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the hardware. Open Apple menu > About This Mac. An Intel processor means the Mac does not meet Apple’s stated requirement.
- Confirm macOS. Open System Settings > General > Software Update. Game Mode requires Sonoma 14 or later.
- Use macOS full screen. Do not rely only on an in-game borderless or fullscreen setting. Try the green macOS full-screen button.
- Reopen the game normally. Quit it, then launch it from Finder, the Dock, Steam, the Mac App Store, or its usual launcher.
- Check for a previous opt-out. If Game Mode was manually disabled for this game, turn it back on from the Game menu or Game Overlay.
- Check Terminal launches on Tahoe. Apple’s macOS Tahoe release notes document that Game Mode may not activate when an application binary is spawned directly from Terminal. Launch the app bundle with
openinstead:open "/Applications/Your Game.app"Advanced users can pass arguments with
--args, for example:open "/Applications/Your Game.app" --args -YourArgumentThis caveat is mainly relevant to direct Terminal execution, not ordinary launches.
- Update the game and macOS. Install available updates and retry.
If the Game menu or Game Overlay still does not appear, the game may not expose the macOS full-screen support required for Game Mode. There is no reliable hidden switch that forces official Game Mode onto an unsupported Mac or game. Apple’s troubleshooting-relevant requirements are summarized on its Game Mode support page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why Game Mode may not improve performance
Game Mode changes resource prioritization; it is not a universal FPS booster. Little or no visible improvement is expected when the main limitation is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- GPU load from high resolution or graphics settings;
- a frame-rate cap;
- shader compilation, asset streaming, or poor game optimization;
- thermal constraints;
- network latency or cloud-streaming performance;
- translation or compatibility-layer overhead;
- a bottleneck that background tasks were not causing in the first place.
For a fair comparison, use the same resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate cap, display, and game scene. Judge consistency and responsiveness as well as average FPS.

Should you leave Game Mode on?
For most supported games, leaving Game Mode on is the sensible default. It is designed to prioritize the game and can be especially useful when background work competes for resources or when using supported wireless controllers and AirPods.
You may turn it off temporarily to troubleshoot stutter, compare behavior, run another demanding application alongside the game, or investigate a game-specific compatibility problem. Do not assume that disabling it saves battery or improves performance; the result depends on the particular game and Mac.
Other ways to improve Mac gaming performance
- Lower resolution, shadows, textures, or other graphics settings.
- Check whether the game has an FPS cap, upscaling option, or Metal-specific setting.
- Pause large downloads and close unnecessary background applications.
- Use wired peripherals if wireless latency is a concern.
- Prefer a native Mac build over a compatibility layer when one is available.
- Consider cloud gaming when local hardware is insufficient.
- If the Mac is Intel-based or cannot meet the game’s performance needs, a newer Apple-silicon Mac may be the practical solution.
These are general optimization measures, not methods for forcing Game Mode onto unsupported hardware.
