On a Java Edition server running 1.21.8 or older, enable command blocks in server.properties by setting enable-command-block=true, then restart the server. On Java 1.21.9 and newer, the control moved to a game rule: use commandBlocksEnabled on 1.21.9–1.21.10 and command_blocks_work on 1.21.11 and later. Game-rule changes apply without a restart.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Enabling the setting is only one part of the process. The player using command blocks must be an operator, the server’s op-permission-level must be at least 2, and the block itself must be obtained with a command because command blocks do not appear in the creative inventory.

Choose the correct method for your Java Edition version
Minecraft changed command-block control from a server property to a game rule. Use the exact name that belongs to your server version rather than copying a command from a different release.
| Java version | Control | What to do | Restart? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.8 and earlier | enable-command-block in server.properties |
Set the value to true. |
Yes. The property is read at startup. |
| 1.21.9–1.21.10 | commandBlocksEnabled game rule |
Run gamerule commandBlocksEnabled true from the server console, or /gamerule commandBlocksEnabled true in game. |
No. |
| 1.21.11 and later, including 26.x according to current third-party guides | command_blocks_work game rule |
Run gamerule command_blocks_work true from the console, or /gamerule command_blocks_work true in game. |
No. |
The rename history is unusually confusing. The Minecraft Wiki version changelog records the rule as enableCommandBlocks when it was first added in 1.21.9, then as commandBlocksEnabled, and finally as command_blocks_work in 1.21.11. Some guides describe the boundary differently, so an “unknown rule” error is a sign to check the exact patch version and try the name listed for that release. The official Java 26.1 release notes do not document a command-block change; the 26.x mapping above comes from current third-party guides rather than a 26.1 note.

Before changing anything
Confirm the edition and patch
These instructions are for a dedicated or locally hosted Java Edition server. Bedrock Edition uses different settings and commands and is not covered here. Check the server’s version in its startup output, launcher, or panel before editing a file or running a game rule. A server on 1.21.10 must use the 1.21.9–1.21.10 rule name; a server on 1.21.11 must use the underscored name.
Back up the server
Make a copy of the server directory, or at minimum the world folder and server.properties, before changing configuration. Stop the server cleanly before editing a file. This prevents a running process from overwriting your change when it shuts down and gives you a recovery point if another setting is accidentally altered.

For these versions, the switch is a startup property and its default is false. Follow this procedure on the machine that stores the server files.
- Stop the server. Use the server’s
stopcommand or the stop control in your hosting panel and wait until the process has completely closed. - Open
server.properties. It is normally in the server’s main directory, alongside the world folder and the server JAR. If your provider presents a file manager, open the file there; the exact panel path differs by provider. - Find the property. Locate
enable-command-block. The complete line should readenable-command-block=true. - Add it if it is missing. Append a new line with exactly
enable-command-block=true. Use lowercasetrue, keep the hyphens, and do not add quotation marks. - Save the file without changing its name. A duplicate line can create ambiguity, so remove an older copy rather than leaving both a
trueand afalseentry. - Start the server again. The property is read during startup; changing the file while the server is running does not activate command blocks until a restart.
What a correct entry looks like
The relevant line is a simple key-value pair:
enable-command-block=true
Do not use enable-command-block: true, enable_command_block=true, or a capitalized value. Those are different strings from the property Minecraft reads.

Java 1.21.9 and 1.21.10: use commandBlocksEnabled
In these releases, command-block permission is a game rule rather than the old server.properties key. Run the command after the server has started.
From the server console
- Open the server console or the console view supplied by your host.
- Enter
gamerule commandBlocksEnabled true. Console interfaces generally omit the leading slash. - Read the response. A successful command changes the rule; no restart is required.
- Verify it with
gamerule commandBlocksEnabled.
From an in-game operator account
If you already have operator status, run:
/gamerule commandBlocksEnabled true
The command must be entered in the correct world on the server and by a player allowed to use server commands. If Minecraft reports that the rule does not exist, do not keep repeating it: verify whether the server is actually 1.21.11 or later, where the name changed again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJava 1.21.11 and later: use command_blocks_work
For 1.21.11 and later releases, including 26.x as described by current third-party guides, the active rule name is command_blocks_work.
Enable it from the console
gamerule command_blocks_work true
Unlike server.properties, a game-rule change takes effect immediately. You can confirm the current value with:

gamerule command_blocks_work
Enable it in game
An operator can enter:
/gamerule command_blocks_work true
Current third-party instructions report that this rule defaults to true, but setting it explicitly is safer when you are diagnosing a server or migrating a world. The official Java 26.1 notes focus on other changes and do not mention command blocks, so do not infer a new command-block behavior from those notes alone.
Give yourself a command block
Command blocks are not included in the creative inventory. An operator can obtain one with:
/give @s command_block
Run that command in game as the player who should receive the item. The other block types use these item IDs:
command_block— impulse command blockchain_command_block— chain command blockrepeating_command_block— repeating command block
If you are issuing the command from a console rather than from the target player, specify the player’s name in place of @s according to the console’s command syntax. Keep command blocks out of ordinary player inventories on a public server unless those players are trusted.

Operator status and permission levels
Make a player an operator
From the server console, run:
op PlayerName
Replace PlayerName with the exact in-game name. In chat, an existing operator can use /op PlayerName. Operator status is required to use the relevant game rule and to run the command that gives a command block.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check op-permission-level
Open server.properties and inspect:
op-permission-level=4
The default is 4. Set the value to at least 2 if it is lower, because command blocks execute commands at OP level 2. Any change to this property requires the same stop, save, and restart cycle used for other server.properties settings. This permission level is separate from the command-block enable switch: a server can have command blocks enabled while a player still lacks enough permission to manage or use them.
Place and test a block safely
- Join with the operator account and run the appropriate
/givecommand. - Place the block in a controlled area that ordinary players cannot access.
- Open its interface and enter a harmless test command such as
say Command block test. - Activate the block with redstone, then check the server chat for the test message.
- After testing, remove the block or restrict access to the area.
Use an impulse block for a one-time test. Chain and repeating blocks are useful for command systems, but they can execute repeatedly or in sequence, so test them away from player builds and valuable items.

“Unknown” or “invalid” gamerule
The rule name is version-specific. Use commandBlocksEnabled on 1.21.9–1.21.10 and command_blocks_work on 1.21.11 and later. If the server is 1.21.8 or older, do not use a game rule; set enable-command-block=true and restart. Also check the server log or startup version rather than relying on the client version shown on the title screen.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The property was edited but nothing changed
- Confirm that the file is named exactly
server.propertiesand is in the directory used by the running server. - Check for a second
enable-command-blockline with the opposite value. - Make sure the value is lowercase
true. - Stop and start the server; the property is not hot-reloaded.
The game rule says true, but a block does nothing
- Verify that the player placing or configuring it is an operator.
- Check
op-permission-level; command blocks execute at level 2. - Make sure the block is being activated. An impulse block needs a redstone activation for a one-time test.
- Check the command inside the block for spelling, selector syntax, and required arguments.
- Test with a simple
saycommand before troubleshooting a complex command chain.
The command block item is missing
That is normal: command blocks do not appear in the creative inventory. Use /give @s command_block while logged in as an operator, or give the item directly to a named player from the console.

Panel layouts and permission systems vary. Locate the server’s actual working directory and edit the copy of server.properties used by the running instance. If the panel exposes only console commands, use the game-rule method on versions that support it; do not assume a panel-specific path or restart button has the same behavior on another provider.
Security considerations for public servers
Command blocks can run powerful commands, including commands that change operator status, grant items, change game mode, or execute other commands. Treat a command block as an administrative capability, not as an ordinary building block.
Quick Recap
- Give operator status only to people who need it.
- Keep command blocks in protected areas and remove test blocks when finished.
- Restrict who can place, edit, or trigger them with your server’s access-control or region-protection tools.
- Back up the world before installing a large command system or allowing untrusted players to interact with one.
- On a public server, test administrative commands in a private area first so a selector or repeating block cannot affect every player accidentally.
