To let other people hear your game on Discord, join a voice channel or call, click Screen Share, select the game window, and choose Go Live. Discord normally has no separate master switch called “enable game sound.” Game Activity and Game Overlay are different features: they can show what you are playing or put Discord controls over a game, but they do not transmit its audio.
The exact result depends on your platform, the game’s capture mode, permissions, and whether the viewer has muted the stream.

Quick steps on Windows and Mac
- Join a server voice channel or start a Discord call.
- Open the game.
- Click the Screen Share icon in the voice controls.
- Select the running game application window.
- Click Go Live.
- Ask a viewer to confirm that both the picture and game audio are audible.
Discord’s current Go Live and Screen Share instructions cover the basic process. Sharing the individual game window is usually preferable to sharing the entire display because it reduces privacy risks and avoids exposing notifications or unrelated applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows
On Windows, launch Discord and the game, then select the game through Screen Share and start the stream. If the game is missing from the picker, open User Settings > Game Activity > Add it and add the running game.

Manual detection does not guarantee that streaming will work. Discord says that a game still not recognized after manual addition cannot be streamed through its game-sharing path. A launcher, anti-cheat process, or unrelated window may also appear instead of the actual game.
Fix full-screen capture problems
True full-screen-exclusive games can interfere with Discord’s application capture. Change the game’s display mode to Borderless, Borderless Fullscreen, or Windowed, then:
- Quit and reopen the game.
- Restart Discord.
- Select the game window again and start the stream.
Discord documents this limitation and recommends borderless mode for better Windows screen-sharing performance in its application-capture guidance. Sharing the entire screen can be a fallback, but first close private chats and disable or hide notifications.

Discord supports application and game-audio sharing on macOS 13 and later. If viewers see the game but hear nothing, open macOS privacy settings and ensure Discord has the required screen-recording permission. Updating macOS and Discord is also recommended. See Discord’s macOS audio-sharing documentation.
Older macOS versions use a different, legacy capture path that may require Discord’s ACE audio component and additional authorization. Follow Discord’s older-macOS instructions rather than assuming the macOS 13 procedure applies.
Chrome browser
Discord supports application-audio capture in Chrome. Open Discord in Chrome, join a call or voice channel, select Screen Share, choose the game or screen offered by the browser, approve the browser’s sharing prompt, and begin streaming.

Chrome’s wording may include a sound-sharing checkbox or prompt. That is a browser capture option, not a universal Discord setting. Discord does not list all browsers as equivalent: its current documentation excludes unsupported browsers and Linux from native application-audio sharing.

Discord’s current documentation says native application-audio sharing is unavailable on Linux. You may still be able to share video, but Discord’s standard screen-share flow should not be expected to capture the game’s sound.
PipeWire, PulseAudio loopback, OBS, virtual audio devices, and capture hardware can form advanced, distribution-specific setups, but they are not guaranteed Discord steps and are not required for the supported Windows, macOS, Chrome, or mobile workflows.
Android
- Join a voice channel or call.
- Tap Screen Share in the voice or video controls.
- Confirm Android’s system prompt.
- Open the game and keep Discord’s stream active.
Discord supports mobile screen sharing on Android 5 and later, while audio sharing requires Android 10 or later. Individual applications can restrict audio capture, and Discord lists Xiaomi devices using MIUI as unsupported for mobile screen sharing. Services such as Netflix and Spotify may also restrict screen or audio sharing. These are app and device limitations, not settings that Nitro or a Discord microphone toggle can universally fix. See Discord’s Mobile Screenshare FAQ.
Discord reported a resolved Android System WebView audio-capture bug affecting roughly April 7 through June 22, 2026. If you experienced that issue, update Android System WebView to version 149 through the Google Play Store, as described in Discord’s June 2026 notice.

iOS audio processing can reduce or pause game audio when Discord is running in the background or when you join voice chat. Connect headphones, check media volume, start Discord voice chat, begin the share, then close and reopen the game if its local audio stops. Discord says there is no iOS setting that disables this operating-system behavior; its explanation is available in the iOS game-audio guide.
If viewers see the game but hear no sound
- Check the viewer’s stream controls. A viewer can right-click the stream and verify that it is not muted and that Stream Volume is high enough.
- Confirm the selected source. Share the running game window, not Discord, a launcher, or another application.
- Check platform support. Native application audio is unavailable on Linux and unsupported browsers.
- Use borderless or windowed mode on Windows. Full-screen-exclusive capture can fail.
- Check macOS permission. Confirm Discord has screen-recording access and that the Mac meets the current audio-capture requirements.
- Update Discord and the operating system. On Windows, update relevant graphics or audio drivers as well.
- Lower stream quality or frame rate. A demanding stream can fail even when voice chat works.
These checks follow Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guidance.
If you cannot hear the game yourself
This is a local playback problem, not necessarily a streaming problem. Check that:
- Discord is not muted or deafened.
- The correct output device is selected under User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Your headset or speakers are connected and not muted.
- The game and operating-system volume mixer are sending sound to the expected device.
- On iPhone or iPad, a headset is connected and the game has been restarted after joining Discord.
Microphone input settings do not normally enable game audio. A microphone is an input source; game sound is application output.

Use these only after checking the source, platform, permissions, and volume:
- Restart Discord.
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video > Video and disable Hardware Acceleration.
- On Windows, run Discord as administrator and test again.
- Under Voice & Video, change Audio Subsystem from Standard to Legacy, or from Legacy to Standard.
- Lower stream resolution or frame rate.
- Use the debugging section to reset voice and video settings.
Discord’s full troubleshooting guide lists these measures for voice, video, and screen-share failures.

What Game Activity and Game Overlay actually do
Game Activity or Activity Sharing can display detectable games and other activities to friends. It does not stream their audio. Discord explains this distinction in its Activity Sharing FAQ.
Game Overlay lets Windows users access Discord controls while playing. It is not the control that transmits game sound, and it is not available on macOS or Linux. Use Screen Share and Go Live for streaming; see Discord’s Game Overlay documentation.
Should you share the game window or the entire screen?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Game application window | Normal game streaming | More private, but may fail with protected or exclusive-fullscreen games. |
| Entire screen | Games missing from the picker or unusual capture modes | May expose notifications, passwords, chats, and unrelated windows. |
Choose the game window first. Use full-screen sharing only after checking what will be visible to viewers.
Do you need Discord Nitro?
The basic game-audio sharing workflow is not documented as Nitro-only. Nitro can provide higher stream-quality options in supported situations—for example, Discord’s documentation notes up to 1080p/60fps on iOS for Nitro subscribers—but it will not fix unsupported Linux or browser capture, missing permissions, a muted stream, full-screen capture failure, or iOS audio routing.
For most missing-audio problems, platform support, the selected capture source, permissions, and viewer stream volume matter more than a paid upgrade. See Discord’s current Nitro information for plan details.
