The Nintendo Switch 2 feels like a meaningful upgrade from the original Switch, but not a friction-free one. The larger screen, faster hardware, redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers and new software features are immediately noticeable. The less exciting discoveries arrive during setup: ordinary Switch microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games, the original dock cannot run Switch 2 TV mode, GameChat now requires Nintendo Switch Online, and compatibility with older games is broad but not universal.
Switch 2 launched in the United States on June 5, 2025, at a launch MSRP of $449.99. The Mario Kart World bundle launched at $499.99. Those are launch prices, not a guarantee of the current price; check Nintendo’s official Switch 2 product page before buying.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The console and controllers look familiar in outline, but the first physical difference is the scale. Switch 2 is a larger machine, with a larger display and redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically rather than using the original rail system. The grip is included, so basic two-controller and TV-mode play does not require an immediate controller purchase.
First boot: the setup is straightforward, but plan ahead
The practical setup sequence is:
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers and connect the AC adapter.
- Select language, region and time zone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and install the required system update.
- Sign in to or link a Nintendo Account.
- Create or transfer user profiles and configure parental controls.
- Transfer data from an existing Switch, if applicable.
- Download or redeem the first game.
- Pair wireless controllers and test handheld and TV modes.
- Optionally configure GameChat and connect a compatible USB camera.
Do not judge the first boot until the update has finished. The launch software was version 20.1.1, but Switch 2 has received later updates. Record the version on the console under System Settings → System → System Update; a launch-version number should not be presented as current.
An internet connection and Nintendo Account may be needed for the eShop, system transfer, GameChat, GameShare, virtual game cards and some compatibility-related functions. A new owner should have the account credentials, Wi-Fi password and any parental-control approvals ready before opening the box.
Moving from an original Switch
System transfer is more than copying a memory card. It can move users, save data, settings and compatible digital purchases, while games generally need to be downloaded again. Screenshots and videos have their own transfer or import process, and controllers, Bluetooth audio devices and custom button mappings may need attention afterward.
Most importantly, do not wipe, sell or trade the old Switch until the new console shows the expected users, saves, screenshots and purchased software. Nintendo’s system-transfer guide explains the supported process.
The microSD card trap
An ordinary Switch microSD card may fit physically, but Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards for Switch 2 game data. Cards up to 2TB are supported, and the card may require a system update the first time it is used. Your old card is not a drop-in game-storage solution.
Existing screenshots and videos can be imported, but game data cannot simply be carried over in the same way. Saves remain in system memory rather than being copied to the microSD Express card. If a new card is not recognized, fully power off the console, remove and reinsert it, confirm that it is genuinely microSD Express, and update the system before concluding that the card is defective. See Nintendo’s microSD Express guidance.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
What old Switch hardware still does
Compatibility is easier to understand when separated by accessory:
- Original Joy-Con: can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach directly to Switch 2.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: can be used wirelessly.
- Original dock: cannot run Switch 2 TV mode.
- Original AC adapter: can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power Switch 2 TV mode through the Switch 2 dock.
- Original HDMI cable: use the included Switch 2 cable instead of assuming the old cable is the recommended option.
That makes the upgrade cost more complicated than the console price suggests. Existing owners may need a microSD Express card, a new dock-related setup, a camera or an additional controller depending on how they play.
Why Mario Kart World is the right first game
Mario Kart World is the most natural first test because it was a launch-day title, it was included digitally in the launch bundle, and its races are immediately understandable to new players and families. It also provides a useful comparison between handheld and TV play without requiring a long tutorial or a deep knowledge of Nintendo’s hardware.
Use it to answer four practical questions:
- Does the larger display make tracks, menus and split-screen play easier to read?
- Do loading transitions feel quicker than on the original Switch?
- Does handheld play remain comfortable despite the larger body?
- Does the new hardware feel like more than a resolution or screen-size increase?
A short session can establish the first impression, but it cannot prove long-term battery life, sustained heat or every performance mode. Nintendo’s published battery estimate is approximately 2–6.5 hours depending on use, so any hands-on battery result needs to identify the game, brightness, wireless settings and test conditions.
The features that change the first hour
A bigger screen and a bigger body
The larger display improves readability and makes handheld games feel less cramped. The trade-off is portability: Switch 2 is physically larger, so owners who value the smallest possible travel system may prefer the original Switch’s proportions. Whether the change feels better depends on hand size, case choice and how often the console is played handheld.
Joy-Con 2 and mouse controls
Magnetic attachment makes connecting and removing the controllers feel different from the original Switch. The Joy-Con 2 controllers also support mouse functionality in compatible games. That is a genuine new control option, not a universal replacement for a traditional controller. Its usefulness depends on the game: it may be helpful for aiming, menus or strategy-style interaction, while being irrelevant in a conventional racing game.
GameChat is no longer a free assumption
GameChat supports groups of up to 12 friends, with up to four video-chat participants when a compatible camera is connected. After Nintendo’s free open-access period ended on March 31, 2026, GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. A camera is sold separately, and Nintendo does not guarantee every third-party camera.

What feels like an upgrade—and what feels like administration
The immediate upgrade is the combination of screen size, processing performance, new controller possibilities and a software library that can include both Switch 2 games and many compatible original Switch games. The immediate inconvenience is ownership preparation: transfer the account, replace the storage assumption, update the system and check each older game’s compatibility.
“Backward compatible” should therefore mean “plays many compatible Switch games,” not “every Switch game works perfectly.” Some titles are unsupported, some have compatibility limitations, and others offer free updates or paid Switch 2 upgrade packs. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guide and the publisher’s support page for a specific game.
What to buy immediately—and what can wait
| Item | Who needs it | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| microSD Express card | Digital-heavy players or anyone short on internal storage | High if downloading several games |
| Nintendo Switch Online | Players who want GameChat or online multiplayer | Required for GameChat after March 31, 2026 |
| Camera | Players who want GameChat video | Optional |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | Frequent TV players or people who prefer a conventional pad | Optional; Joy-Con 2 are included |
| Extra Joy-Con 2 pair | Families needing additional local multiplayer controllers | Optional |
Do not buy a storage card merely because it is labeled “microSD.” It must be microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. Likewise, do not assume an old dock, AC adapter or HDMI cable reproduces the full Switch 2 TV setup.
Initial verdict
For a new Nintendo customer, Switch 2 is the clearest purchase: it is Nintendo’s current hybrid platform, supports a growing Switch 2 library and can play many compatible Switch games. The Mario Kart World bundle is the simplest first-day option if the included digital game is wanted, but compare its current price with the standalone console and game before buying.
For an original Switch owner, the case is strongest when the larger screen, improved performance, new exclusives, local multiplayer or a sizable existing compatible library matters. The upgrade is less compelling for someone who mainly plays unchanged legacy games, is satisfied with an OLED Switch, or does not want to budget for new storage and possible accessory replacements.
The first-day lesson is that Switch 2 is not merely a larger Switch. It is a more capable successor that preserves much of the old platform while changing the practical rules around storage, accessories, online communication and compatibility.
Quick Recap
First-day checklist
- Confirm the region-specific box contents.
- Record the firmware version after updating.
- Complete account linking before transferring data.
- Keep the old Switch until saves and purchases are verified.
- Buy only microSD Express storage for Switch 2 game data.
- Use the included Switch 2 dock, AC adapter and HDMI cable for TV mode.
- Check individual Switch games rather than assuming universal compatibility.
- Remember that GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online after March 31, 2026.
