Enable vBulletin’s built-in gzip output from Admin CP → Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options (older releases may label this area vBulletin Options). Set GZIP HTML Output to Yes, choose a compression level, and save. Start with level 1, which the vBulletin manual recommends and lists as the default. Before switching it on, confirm that PHP has ZLIB support and that your web server is not already compressing the same responses with mod_gzip or another gzip layer.

What vBulletin gzip compression does
vBulletin can compress the HTML it generates before sending it to a browser. A supporting client receives a gzip-encoded response instead of the uncompressed HTML, reducing the amount of data transferred and therefore the bandwidth required for forum pages. The vBulletin documentation describes the option as compressing page HTML for clients that support gzip and HTTP/1.1.

This is response compression, not image optimization, database compression, or a way to compress files stored in your forum directory. It applies to generated HTML output. Stylesheets, scripts, images, downloads, and other assets may be handled separately by your web server, CDN, or application configuration.
The feature depends on PHP’s ZLIB library. If ZLIB is unavailable, enabling the Admin CP option cannot provide working vBulletin gzip output. A second requirement is avoiding two gzip layers on the same response: vBulletin should not gzip content when the server is already doing so with mod_gzip or an equivalent module.

Check these prerequisites first
Spend a few minutes checking the environment before changing the setting. These checks prevent the most common blank-page and content-encoding failures.
Use an administrator account
You need access to the vBulletin Admin CP and permission to change global options. If the settings menu is missing, ask an account holder with full administrative privileges to make the change.

Confirm PHP ZLIB support
The vBulletin manual states that this feature requires ZLIB. Check the PHP configuration used by the forum, not merely a different PHP binary on the server. Hosting control panels, command-line PHP, and the PHP process serving the website can use different configurations. If your host manages PHP, ask whether ZLIB is enabled for the website’s active PHP version.
Find out whether the server already compresses HTML
Ask your host or server administrator whether Apache, a reverse proxy, a control-panel setting, or another web-server module already applies gzip compression. The specific warning in the vBulletin documentation concerns mod_gzip, but the same double-compression risk applies to an equivalent server-level gzip layer. Choose one owner for HTML compression rather than enabling both.
Identify your interface version
Current instructions commonly show Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options. Older vBulletin interfaces may call the broader area vBulletin Options. The option name itself is GZIP HTML Output; if you cannot find it, use the Admin CP search or check the equivalent Cookies and HTTP Header Options page for your release.

Enable gzip in the Admin CP
- Sign in to the Admin CP. Use an administrator account that can edit vBulletin options.
- Open the option group. Go to Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options. In older interfaces, open vBulletin Options and then locate the Cookies and HTTP Header Options section.
- Turn on HTML compression. Change GZIP HTML Output to Yes.
- Select a level. Set GZIP Compression Level to 1 for the documented recommended starting point. The manual documents values from 0 through 9.
- Save the options. Click Save. The manual says the setting takes effect after saving.
- Test a normal forum page. Open a representative thread, forum index, and any page that uses your usual plugins or custom templates. Look for a normal rendered page before testing headers.
- Confirm one encoding header. Use browser developer tools or an HTTP response-header checker and inspect the document response. A gzip-compressed response should expose a single
Content-Encoding: gzipheader for a client that advertises gzip support. This verification is an operational check; it is not a published performance test.
If the page renders correctly and the response shows one gzip encoding layer, the vBulletin setting is working as intended. If the page is blank, garbled, or reports an encoding problem, follow the rollback procedure below before trying a different level.
Which compression level should you choose?
vBulletin documents a range of 0–9. Level 0 means no compression; level 9 is the maximum setting in the documented range. The manual recommends level 1 and lists it as the default. No authoritative source in the available documentation publishes a bandwidth percentage, response-size benchmark, or server-load result for the individual levels.

Do not treat the number as a published performance guarantee. A higher setting can require more compression work, while the actual transfer-size difference depends on the HTML being generated and the server environment. Because no official benchmark is supplied, change levels only after observing your own response sizes and server behavior. If you need a conservative, documented choice, leave the level at 1.
How to verify the result safely
Inspect the document response in a browser
Open developer tools, reload a representative vBulletin page, and select the main document request rather than an image, stylesheet, or script. In the response headers, look for Content-Encoding: gzip. The request must advertise gzip support; vBulletin’s feature is intended for clients that support gzip and HTTP/1.1.
Check for duplicate encoding
There should be one compression layer. If headers or an intermediary indicate that content has been compressed twice, turn off either the server-level compressor or vBulletin’s option. Do not attempt to solve duplicate compression by raising or lowering the vBulletin level; the problem is ownership of the compression step.

Test more than the home page
Forum software can generate different HTML paths for thread pages, forum listings, search results, logged-in users, and pages altered by plugins. Check at least one page from each important path. A successful home-page load does not prove every plugin-generated response is compatible.
Record the baseline
Before experimenting with levels, note whether the page loads, whether the response has a single encoding header, and whether the server reports an error. This gives you a clear comparison when you change one setting at a time. The available documentation does not establish a universal bandwidth reduction, so your own headers and logs are the appropriate evidence for a local decision.
Troubleshoot a blank page or content-encoding error
When a page becomes blank, partially rendered, or displays a browser content-encoding error immediately after enabling gzip, disable the vBulletin option first. The vBulletin developer documentation attributes failures to cases in which vBulletin and the server both gzip the response.
Normal Admin CP rollback
- Return to Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options (or the corresponding vBulletin Options page).
- Set GZIP HTML Output to No.
- Save the option.
- Reload the affected page and clear any intermediary cache only if the old response remains visible.
Once the forum is working again, ask the host to identify the active server compression module. Do not re-enable vBulletin gzip until you know which layer will own compression.

UPDATE setting SET value = '0' WHERE varname = 'gzipoutput';Run it against the vBulletin database using your normal database administration procedure and take a backup before modifying the database. The exact table prefix and database account depend on your installation; the documented statement uses the table name setting without a prefix.
Config.php emergency switch
The developer manual also documents a configuration-level bypass. Add the following immediately after the opening PHP tag in config.php:

- Check whether server-level gzip was enabled independently of the vBulletin change.
- Review web-server and PHP error logs for output-buffering or content-encoding errors.
- Test a page without recently changed plugins or custom output hooks.
- Ask the host whether a proxy or cache is rewriting the response headers.
- Restore the last known working configuration before testing another variable.
vBulletin compression versus server-level compression
Both approaches can compress HTML, but they are controlled in different places. The vBulletin manual specifically says not to enable its gzip option when mod_gzip is already active. The choice should be based on which layer you can verify and operate reliably.

There is no need to run both layers to obtain “more” compression. Select one, verify one Content-Encoding: gzip response, and document where the setting is maintained so a future administrator does not enable the second compressor.

Common mistakes to avoid
Enabling the option without checking ZLIB
ZLIB is a stated requirement. If it is missing from the PHP runtime serving vBulletin, troubleshoot the PHP environment rather than repeatedly changing the compression level.
Assuming a level is a percentage
The values 0–9 are compression settings, not “0% to 90% bandwidth savings.” The available documentation gives no universal transfer-reduction statistic. Level 1 is the documented recommendation; any other choice should be evaluated on your own pages.
Compressing twice
Running vBulletin gzip and a server gzip module on the same HTML response can produce invalid content encoding. This is the failure mode most directly called out by the vBulletin developer documentation.
Testing only one request
Plugins, login state, and custom templates can change output. Verify representative pages and inspect the actual document response rather than assuming that an asset request proves HTML compression works.
Changing several variables at once
Do not alter the compression level, PHP version, web-server compression, and cache settings simultaneously. Make one change, save it, test, and record the result. That method makes rollback and diagnosis practical.
What the documentation establishes—and what it does not
The vBulletin manual establishes the purpose of the feature, the ZLIB requirement, the 0–9 range, level 1 as the recommendation and default, and the warning against using vBulletin gzip alongside mod_gzip. The developer manual establishes the SQL and NOZIP recovery methods for output failures.
