Identify which one you have before changing graphics, ports, or gameplay coefficients. A fast single-core CPU, ample RAM beyond the process’s starting demand, SSD storage, and measurements taken during the actual failure matter more than a headline slot count.

Identify the kind of lag before changing anything
Rubberbanding is an effect, not a diagnosis. Use the symptom that occurs at the same time as the problem to narrow the search.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| What you notice | Most likely area | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Low or erratic frame rate on your screen, regardless of other players | Client rendering | GPU/CPU frame time, graphics settings, thermals, and local background load |
| High ping, packet loss, or players teleporting while the server remains healthy | Network path | Latency and loss between each player and the host; test from another connection or region |
| Rubberbanding, delayed inventory or building actions, NPCs reacting late, “Missed Acks,” or a falling server tick/FPS display | Server simulation or world state | Per-core CPU use, committed memory, pagefile activity, disk latency, logs, and tick/FPS during the event |
Client FPS is not server FPS
A smoother graphics frame rate does not repair a server that is processing game logic late. Conversely, lowering a server coefficient will not fix a client that is rendering at an unacceptable frame rate. Have the affected player record local frame time while the administrator records server metrics; the two measurements can diverge.
Network delay can look like simulation lag
Ping is a round-trip network measurement. It does not show how quickly the server’s simulation thread completes a tick. A player can have a low displayed ping and still receive late combat results if the server is busy, blocked on storage, or unable to keep up with world state. Check packet loss and consistency, not just the smallest ping number.

Use community reports as clues, not guarantees
In one Steam discussion, a user described rubberbanding as server FPS falling from about 30 to 17 over three days with 10 players. That is an anecdotal observation, not a controlled benchmark or a promised threshold; it is useful because it shows why recording tick/FPS over time is more informative than checking it once. Read the discussion.
Measure the server while the problem is happening
Collect a short record before making changes. Otherwise, a restart may appear to “fix” the issue while hiding the cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Write down the date, server uptime, player count, affected locations, and the exact action that produces the delay (for example, a boss fight, opening a chest, or placing a structure).
- Watch CPU usage per logical core, not only the total percentage. A simulation thread can be saturated while aggregate utilization looks low.
- Record committed RAM, available physical memory, and pagefile activity. A rising commit charge or active paging indicates memory pressure even when no process appears to use all installed RAM.
- Measure disk latency and queue depth while players interact with bases, inventories, and saves. SSD or NVMe capacity alone does not prove that the storage path is free of stalls.
- Capture the server’s tick or FPS display and relevant log lines at the same timestamps as the delay.
- Repeat the observation with one variable changed, such as moving players away from a dense base, so you can tell a world-state issue from a network-wide issue.
Low total CPU is not an all-clear. A Steam report describes desynchronization during boss fights with only 15–20% aggregate CPU utilization, illustrating why per-core and tick measurements are necessary. See the reported scenario.

Choose hardware with headroom, not just the minimum
Valve’s current Soulmask listing gives a useful floor, while server-focused guidance explains why a machine that technically starts the process can still degrade as a world grows.
| Specification | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| System memory, minimum | 16 GB | Baseline listed by Steam; leaves less room for the operating system, other services, and world growth |
| System memory, recommended | 24 GB | Steam’s recommended amount, providing more operating headroom |
| Storage, minimum listing | SSD (preferred) | Mechanical disks are a poor choice for save and world-state access |
| Storage, recommended listing | SSD highly recommended | Use low-latency SSD storage and verify that the host is not throttling or saturated |
| Observed process use at startup | Roughly 12 GB | Figure from the Chieftain’s Field Guide; the process can grow as the world develops |
The Steam requirements are on the Soulmask store page. The approximately 12 GB startup figure and the warning that memory usage grows with the world come from the Chieftain’s Field Guide. Neither figure is a universal reservation for every operating system, mod, or hosting layout, so leave additional capacity for the OS, monitoring, backups, and any control panel.
Prioritize single-core speed for the simulation thread
The same server guide says fast single-core CPU performance is more valuable than simply adding more cores. Additional cores still help the operating system and other services, but they cannot make a single busy simulation thread finish faster. When comparing hosts, put sustained per-core performance and thermal stability ahead of a large core count on paper.

Storage latency is part of the design
Use an SSD, preferably NVMe when the host’s implementation can deliver consistent latency. Check actual disk latency during saves and busy interactions; a shared or throttled volume can erase the advantage of the drive type printed in a specification sheet.
Compare hosts on the variables that change real performance
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Single-core CPU | Is sustained per-core performance documented, and does the host throttle under continuous load? |
| RAM capacity and headroom | How much remains after the server, operating system, panel, backups, and monitoring are running? |
| SSD/NVMe latency | Is storage dedicated or shared, and can you see latency during saves? |
| World age and player load | Can you monitor memory and tick behavior as the world grows rather than only at first launch? |
| Base and NPC density | Can administrators identify areas that generate persistent simulation work? |
| Location and measured latency | Are most players close to the region, and is packet loss measured from their networks? |
| Operations tooling | Do you have logs, scheduled backups, graceful restarts, and a way to roll back a bad change? |
Test world complexity and uptime as possible causes
A powerful machine does not guarantee a healthy tick rate if the world creates more simulation work than the server can process. Large bases, dense automation, many NPCs, and long uptimes are reasonable hypotheses to test, not proven causes in every world.
One community report described delayed interactions and “Missed Acks” around a large base despite eight cores, 36 GB of RAM, M.2 NVMe storage, and approximately 2 ms latency. That hardware context is anecdotal and does not establish a minimum or a fault; it demonstrates why measuring the affected area matters. View the report.

A controlled complexity check
- Record tick/FPS, per-core load, memory commit, disk latency, and logs at the busy location.
- Move a small test group to a less developed area and repeat the same interaction.
- If the delay follows the players everywhere, investigate network or global server load. If it stays near one base, inventory its active machines, NPCs, structures, and automation.
- Temporarily reduce one category of activity, then measure again. Do not remove multiple systems at once or you will not know which change mattered.
Plan maintenance from evidence
Restarting on a timer can clear a temporary condition, but it is not a substitute for finding a steadily growing workload or memory problem. Schedule a restart or maintenance window only when logs and measurements show degradation with uptime. Back up the world first and announce the window so players do not lose progress.
Reduce load in a safe order
- Set a sustainable active-player target. Start below the number at which monitoring shows tick decline, then increase gradually while watching the same metrics. The available sources do not establish a universal player-count ceiling or a slot number that guarantees lag-free play.
- Audit the busiest world areas. Look for concentrated bases, automation, and NPC populations. Test a reduction in one area and compare tick behavior rather than assuming every large build is harmful.
- Remove avoidable background work. Stop unused services on the host, keep backups from competing with peak play, and investigate scheduled jobs that coincide with disk-latency spikes.
- Use restarts as a measured maintenance action. Compare before-and-after uptime data. If performance returns only briefly, continue investigating world growth, memory pressure, or a recurring log error.
Change gameplay coefficients without corrupting the server
Soulmask exposes more than 200 customizable settings for private servers, but changing a coefficient is an operational change: preserve the original, let the game save it, restart, and verify the result.
Use the administrator menu
- Join the server as an administrator and open the console with the
~key. - Enter
gm key YOUR-ADMIN-PASSWORDto load the administrator menu. GhostCap documents this exact command and the subsequent coefficient-settings path in its Soulmask server configuration guide. - Open the coefficient settings and change only the values you have selected for testing.
- Wait for the game’s autosave to complete. Closing or killing the process before the save can discard the change.
- Perform a graceful restart so the server loads the new values, then verify the setting and observe tick/FPS, logs, and player reports.
Edit the file only with a backup
The coefficient file is WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json, as documented in this Steam Community reference. Stop or quiesce the server according to your host’s procedure, copy the file to a dated backup, make one small valid JSON edit, and restore the backup if the process refuses to start or settings revert. After restarting, validate both the file and an in-game behavior that the coefficient should affect.

Use virtual memory only as an emergency buffer
Community reports associate some crashes on 16 GB systems with out-of-memory conditions and suggest increasing the operating system pagefile. Paging can prevent an immediate allocation failure, but it is much slower than physical RAM and is not an official Soulmask performance fix. Treat it as a safety valve while you reduce load or add memory, not as a way to turn a constrained host into a high-capacity server. The report documenting this suggestion is anecdotal; read it here.
A practical incident checklist
- Classify the symptom as client frame rate, network latency/loss, or server simulation.
- Record player count, uptime, location, action, server tick/FPS, per-core CPU, committed RAM, pagefile activity, disk latency, and logs.
- Compare a dense base or boss encounter with a quiet location using the same measurements.
- Confirm the host has SSD storage, enough RAM beyond the process’s observed demand, and strong single-core performance.
- Change one load variable at a time and keep a dated note of the result.
- Back up
GameXishu.jsonbefore manual edits; allow autosave and restart after menu changes. - Use a pagefile only to avoid an immediate out-of-memory failure while pursuing a lasting capacity fix.
What the available evidence cannot promise
There is no cited publisher benchmark establishing a universal player limit, server tick target, or guaranteed lag cure. Community measurements are valuable diagnostic leads but are not controlled tests. A settings reference from the Systems Wiki says its data was extracted from the developer’s dedicated-server package build 25117130 on September 5, 2026, and includes hidden performance-related settings; treat those entries as version-specific and verify them against the build you run. Consult the Systems Wiki for that stated scope.
