Then start the server with an unused world slot or a new seed. Core Keeper does not convert an existing save to Hard mode; the Hard setting applies when a new world is generated.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Core Keeper servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you need to know before changing the setting
Core Keeper stores the difficulty choice as part of the generated world. Changing the server configuration while continuing to load the same save does not change that world’s mode. To create a Hard world, you must generate a world that has not been created before by selecting an unused world slot or changing worldSeed.

The exact file location depends on how the server was installed. Guides commonly place it at /core-keeper/DedicatedServer/ServerConfig.json on Akliz and at /DedicatedServer/ServerConfig.json on Nodecraft. A self-hosted installation may use a different directory, so search for the file inside the folder that contains the dedicated-server executable and world data.
Method 1: Edit ServerConfig.json directly
This method works when you have access to the server files through an FTP client, a control-panel file manager, or the machine’s filesystem.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Use the host’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process from the operating system. Do not edit the configuration while the process is writing the world. Wait until the panel reports that the server is offline.
2. Back up the save and configuration
Download or copy the current world directory and ServerConfig.json to a separate location. Label the backup with the date and the world slot or seed. The backup gives you a way to restore the previous world if you select the wrong slot or make a JSON syntax error.

3. Open the correct configuration file
Open ServerConfig.json in a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that inserts formatting. On the hosting services documented in current third-party guides, the paths are:
| Installation or host guide | Reported path |
|---|---|
| Akliz | /core-keeper/DedicatedServer/ServerConfig.json |
| Nodecraft | /DedicatedServer/ServerConfig.json |
If several copies exist, use the one in the active DedicatedServer directory shown by your startup command or panel. Editing an unused copy has no effect.
4. Set worldMode to 1
Find the worldMode property and set its value to the number 1:
"worldMode": 1
Keep the JSON punctuation intact. The value should be numeric, not the quoted text "1". If the property is already present, change only its value. If your file uses a different spacing style, preserve the surrounding commas and braces.

5. Select an unused world slot or change the seed
Locate the world value and replace it with a slot number that has never been generated on this server. Alternatively, leave the slot arrangement alone and change worldSeed to a seed that has not been used. Nodecraft’s instructions describe an unused slot as the trigger for creating a new world with the difficulty set at startup.
Do not overwrite the number of a world you want to keep. If you are uncertain which slots contain saves, make a directory listing or use the panel’s world-management screen before choosing a new value. The often-repeated slot range of 0–29 appears in an XGamingServer guide, but that range is not confirmed by a primary game reference; do not assume it is a universal limit for every server build.
6. Save, validate, and restart
Save the file as ServerConfig.json without changing its extension or character encoding. If your editor has a JSON validation feature, run it before uploading the file. Start the server and watch the console for a normal world-generation sequence. The first launch on the unused slot or seed should create a new world in Hard mode.
Method 2: Use a hosting-panel World Mode field
Managed hosts can expose the same setting as a dropdown or text field, so you do not have to edit JSON manually. The panel still needs a new world index or seed; selecting Hard alone does not retrofit an existing save.
BisectHosting
- Stop the server.
- Open Settings, then Startup.
- Set the World Mode dropdown to Hard.
- Change the world index to an unused value, or provide a new seed.
- Save the startup settings and start the server.
MintServers
- Stop the server.
- Open Game Settings.
- Set the World Mode field to Hard.
- Choose a new world index before launching.
- Start the server and allow the new world to generate.
Panel labels can change between products and interface versions. Look for a field named World Mode, worldMode, or an equivalent startup variable. If the panel writes a configuration file for you, the resulting value should still be 1.
Why your current world will not become Hard
The difficulty is established during world generation. A server restart with worldMode=1 does not alter the metadata of a world that already exists in the selected slot. If you keep the same slot and seed, the server loads that save rather than generating a Hard world.

There are two practical choices:
| Choice | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the existing slot | The current world continues on its original difficulty. | Use this when preserving player progress is more important than starting Hard mode. |
| Use a new slot or seed | A separate world is generated using worldMode=1. |
Use this when you want Hard mode without deleting the old save. |
Starting a new slot is safer than deleting the old one: players can return to the previous world by restoring its original slot and configuration from the backup. Tell players which world is active before they connect so they do not mistake the new map for a reset or data loss.
Choosing between a new slot and a new seed
Use a new slot when you want to preserve the seed
Changing only world lets you keep the seed value documented for the server while creating a separate save. This is useful when you want the old and new worlds available side by side, provided your host supports multiple slots and you keep track of which number belongs to each save.
Use a new seed when you want a completely different map
Changing worldSeed requests a different generated world. Record the new seed in your server notes so you can identify the map later. A new seed is also a clear way to avoid accidentally loading a directory that already exists under the selected slot.
Do not combine an uncertain slot change with an unrecorded seed
If you change both values at once and later need to recover the old world, it can be harder to determine which combination produced each save. Change one deliberate variable, record it, and keep the backup before launching.
Mode numbers: what is established and what is not
Multiple third-party server guides agree that 1 means Hard. They disagree about the numeric codes for Casual and Creative, so do not copy a value from another guide unless it matches the README shipped with your server build.

The disagreement does not affect Hard mode: every mapping above uses 1. It does mean that a value copied for Casual or Creative could select a different mode on your build. The older README quoted in a Steam discussion documents command-line options such as -world 0 and -worldmode, with 0 for Normal and 1 for Hard, but its age is not established. Treat it as historical guidance rather than proof of current behavior.

World-generation settings that require extra care
Difficulty and world-generation parameters are separate concerns. Nodecraft notes that settings such as ore density, tunnels, rivers, and lakes need a world uploaded from Singleplayer. If you are trying to reproduce a customized Singleplayer map, changing worldMode alone will not recreate those generation choices. Prepare or upload the intended world according to your host’s procedure, then ensure that the server starts with the desired mode and world identity.
Do not assume that changing a generation option on an already-created save will rebuild terrain. As with difficulty, generation choices are applied when the world is created.
Verification after the first Hard-mode launch
- Confirm the active identity: check that the startup configuration shows the new slot or seed you recorded.
- Check the console: look for world creation rather than a message indicating that an existing save was loaded.
- Join with a test account: verify that players see a fresh world and that the server remains stable before inviting everyone.
- Stop and restart once: after the initial generation, restart the server and confirm it loads the newly created Hard world consistently.
- Preserve the old backup: do not delete the previous save until the new world has been tested and accepted by the players.
The configuration file itself is the reliable place to verify the selected mode: it should contain "worldMode": 1. A panel may display “Hard” while the file is being regenerated, so check the panel’s saved value and the active startup file if the behavior is unexpected.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts the old world
Most often, the world slot was not changed, the selected slot already contained a save, or the wrong copy of ServerConfig.json was edited. Stop the server, identify the configuration file used by the startup command, choose a demonstrably unused slot or a new seed, and launch again. Do not delete the old save until you have confirmed which directory is active.
The panel shows Hard but the world is unchanged
Hard was selected after the world had already been generated. Keep the setting, change the world index or seed, and start a new world. The panel cannot convert the existing save.
The server refuses to start after the edit
Restore the backup and compare the edited line for missing commas, quotation marks, or braces. Ensure that the file is still named ServerConfig.json and that worldMode is a number. A JSON validator can identify syntax errors before you restart. If the server starts after restoring the backup, reapply only the worldMode and world-identity changes.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Players report that progress disappeared
They are probably connecting to the newly selected slot. Stop the server and switch back to the original slot, or restore the backed-up configuration and save. Keep the Hard world on its separate slot so both worlds remain recoverable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Hard mode works but another mode value does not
Do not infer Casual or Creative codes from a different guide. Read the README bundled with your dedicated-server build or test the value on a disposable world. The published third-party mappings conflict, while the Hard value of 1 is the consistent point.
The game ID or command-line example does not match your files
Older community posts disagree about the length of Core Keeper’s game ID and about command-line syntax. Neither detail is required to enable Hard mode through ServerConfig.json. Follow the configuration format and startup documentation included with your current server package instead of copying an outdated command.
Safe rollback and switching between worlds
To return to the former world, stop the server and select its original world value, or restore the backed-up configuration and save directory. Start the server only after checking that the slot and seed point to the intended save. To switch back to the Hard world, restore the Hard world’s recorded values. Never run two server instances against the same save directory.
Keep a small inventory for each world containing its slot number, seed, mode, creation date, and backup location. This prevents an ordinary restart from accidentally opening the wrong map and makes future migrations easier.
Quick checklist
- Stop the Core Keeper server.
- Back up the current save and
ServerConfig.json. - Set
worldModeto numeric value1. - Use an unused
worldslot or changeworldSeed. - Save valid JSON and confirm you edited the active configuration file.
- Start the server and verify that a new world is generated.
- Test the new world before deleting or overwriting the old save.
- Keep the README for your server build available when using any mode value other than Hard.
Bottom line
Hard difficulty is enabled with worldMode=1, but the setting takes effect only when Core Keeper generates a world. Use a new slot or seed, whether you edit ServerConfig.json yourself or select Hard in a hosting panel. Existing saves stay on their original difficulty, so a backup and careful world-slot tracking are the safeguards that matter most.
