In Java Edition, the command is /setworldspawn [<pos>] [<angle>] and requires operator (OP) status. In Bedrock Edition, use /setworldspawn [spawnPoint: x y z] with cheats enabled; on a dedicated server, that means allow-cheats=true in server.properties. Use /spawnpoint instead when you want to change one player’s respawn point rather than the world’s shared spawn.

What you are changing: world spawn versus a player’s respawn
Minecraft has two related but different spawn settings:

- World spawn: the shared location set with
/setworldspawn. This is the server-wide spawn setting. - Player respawn point: an individual player’s setting changed with
/spawnpoint. It is separate from the world spawn.
If your goal is to move the location associated with the server itself, use /setworldspawn. If you want every player to receive an individual respawn location, or want to change only one player’s return point, use /spawnpoint instead. Setting one does not replace the other.
Java and Bedrock command requirements
The edition matters because the command syntax and permission checks differ.

Command behavior can change between Minecraft versions. If a current version rejects a form shown here, check the live command reference for that edition and version before changing other server settings.
Set the world spawn in Java Edition
Method 1: Set it where you are standing
- Travel to the block you want to use as the world-spawn location.
- Turn to face the direction in which newly arriving players should face.
- Open in-game chat and run
/setworldspawn. The no-argument form uses the position where the command is run. - If you are running the command in the server console rather than in chat, execute the same command there.
This is the quickest method when you can physically stand at the desired location. It also lets you choose the facing direction naturally before issuing the command.

Method 2: Supply coordinates and an angle
Java accepts an explicit position and optional angle:
/setworldspawn 100 70 100 -180That example sets the world spawn at the supplied block coordinates and uses an angle of -180, which makes players face north according to the command reference summarized above. If you leave out the angle, Java uses its default of 0.0, due south.
Use explicit coordinates when an administrator is working from a map plan, a build document, or the console and does not want the command executor’s current location to determine the result. Confirm the coordinate order before pressing Enter: the command expects the three position values in the order shown by the syntax.

Give yourself OP status when the command is rejected
Running the command in Java requires operator status. A server administrator can grant it from the console or another authorized context with:

/op <username>Replace <username> with the player’s exact account name, then run /setworldspawn again. If you do not control operator permissions, ask the server owner to run the command rather than attempting to bypass the permission system.
Set the world spawn in Bedrock Edition
Enable cheats before running the command
Bedrock requires cheats to be enabled for the world. On a Bedrock dedicated server, set the server property to:
allow-cheats=trueThe setting belongs in server.properties. Apply the change using the server’s normal restart or reload procedure, then run the command from an authorized in-game session or the server console. The exact administration interface can differ by hosting environment.
Run the coordinate form
Bedrock’s documented syntax is:
/setworldspawn x y zFor example:
/setworldspawn 100 70 100Bedrock accepts floating-point coordinates, so decimal values can be used when the desired spawn location is not expressed as whole numbers. Unlike the Java form described above, the Bedrock syntax supplied for this command contains only the spawn coordinates; do not append Java’s angle argument unless the command help for your specific version explicitly shows one.

Set a player’s respawn point instead
Use /spawnpoint when the requirement is personal rather than server-wide. This command changes an individual player’s respawn point and does not change the world spawn.
A host guide gives this form for applying a location to every currently targeted player:
/spawnpoint @a ~ ~ ~Here, @a targets all players and the tilde coordinates are relative coordinates. Use the target selector and coordinate form appropriate to your edition and server version. For a single player, replace the target with that player’s selector or name according to the command help available on the server.
Choose /spawnpoint for a team base, an event staging area, or a personal checkpoint. Choose /setworldspawn for the shared world-level location. Keeping those scopes separate prevents a per-player command from being mistaken for a server-wide change.

Pick a safe, usable block
Before issuing the command, inspect the proposed area from the perspective of a player arriving there. A spawn platform should have enough clear space to stand and should not place arrivals inside a wall, over a drop, or in another hazardous part of a build. The command sets the coordinates you provide; it does not redesign the surrounding terrain for you.

For Java’s no-argument form, stand at the intended location before running the command. For an explicit-coordinate command, verify the numbers against the coordinate display or the map plan you are using.
Set the arrival direction in Java
Java lets you include an angle after the position. If you omit it, the default angle is 0.0, due south. To control the initial direction, either face the desired way before using the no-argument command or provide the angle explicitly. The documented example -180 faces north.
Bedrock’s supplied syntax does not include a direction argument. If facing direction is important on Bedrock, verify the command help for the exact version and server software you operate rather than copying the Java argument.
Why players may appear away from the exact block
Changing the world-spawn coordinates does not guarantee that every player will visually appear on the exact block you selected. A Minecraft Forum report describes players appearing roughly 15 blocks from a newly set point when WorldGuard was installed. The same report notes that the server’s spawn-radius setting can affect the result, and that setting the radius to zero did not solve that particular case.
Treat this as an interaction to investigate, not as proof that the command failed. First confirm the command was accepted, then check whether a protection or spawn-management plugin is redirecting arrivals.

Check the spawn-radius setting
If players consistently appear around the intended point rather than at it, inspect the server’s spawn-radius configuration. The setting may cause arrivals to be distributed around the world spawn. The available evidence does not establish one universal value or one guaranteed correction for every server, so record the current setting before changing it and test the result after each change.
Check plugins and protected regions
WorldGuard was specifically reported as a possible factor in players appearing away from the set location. Other spawn-management or protection plugins can also take control of where players are sent. Temporarily review plugin rules, region flags, and join/teleport handlers with the server administrator. Do not remove a plugin blindly on a production server; isolate the cause in a maintenance window or a copy of the world when possible.

“Unknown command” or syntax error
- Confirm whether the server is running Java or Bedrock Edition.
- Use the syntax for that edition rather than combining Java’s angle argument with Bedrock’s coordinate form.
- Check the command suggestions or help output supplied by the exact Minecraft version and server software.
- Make sure the command begins with
/when entered in in-game chat.
“You do not have permission” in Java
Ask an administrator to grant OP status with /op <username>, or have an authorized operator run /setworldspawn for you. Operator permission is a Java requirement; changing coordinates will not overcome a missing permission level.
Bedrock refuses to run the command
Check that cheats are enabled for the world. For a dedicated Bedrock server, verify that allow-cheats=true is present in server.properties, then apply the server’s normal restart or reload process. If the command still fails, compare the command help shown by your installed version with the coordinate syntax above.
The command succeeds but arrivals are offset
- Verify that you changed the world spawn, not only a player’s
/spawnpoint. - Check the spawn-radius setting.
- Review WorldGuard and any other plugin that can intercept spawning, joining, or teleporting.
- Test again after one controlled change at a time so you can identify which setting affects the result.
The direction is wrong in Java
Remember that omitting Java’s angle uses 0.0, due south. Re-run the command while facing the desired direction, or supply an explicit angle such as the documented -180 example for north. If the position is correct but the facing is not, adjust only the angle rather than changing the coordinates.

Practical administrator workflow
For a reliable change on a live server, separate planning, execution, and verification:
- Identify the edition. Java and Bedrock do not use identical syntax or permission rules.
- Confirm access. Arrange Java OP status or enable Bedrock cheats and, on a dedicated Bedrock server, set
allow-cheats=true. - Prepare the location. Clear the area, note the coordinates, and decide which direction players should face if you are on Java.
- Run the smallest correct command. Use no arguments when standing at the target, or provide explicit coordinates when working from the console or a plan.
- Test with the real server conditions. Check the result in the same environment in which players will join, including installed plugins and current spawn-radius settings.
- Investigate offsets before changing more settings. A plugin or radius rule can make a successful command look ineffective.

The bracketed portions in command syntax indicate optional arguments only where the edition’s form says they are optional. Always use the in-game or server-console help for the version you actually run.
Version and server-software caveat
The command forms above reflect the documented Java and Bedrock behavior available for this guide. Whether a 2026 release changed /setworldspawn behavior was not established by the available material. Server software, plugins, and configuration can also alter what players experience after the command is accepted. When upgrading Minecraft or changing server software, recheck the current official command reference and repeat a controlled spawn test.
