What mbstring does in WordPress
mbstring is PHP’s multibyte-string extension. It supplies functions that handle multibyte encodings such as UTF-8, where one character can occupy more than one byte. WordPress identifies it as useful for handling UTF-8 text correctly and notes that the extension may need to be installed or enabled depending on how the host packages PHP. The PHP manual states: “mbstring is a non-default extension. This means it is not enabled by default. You must explicitly enable the module with the configure option.” A source build therefore needs --enable-mbstring; a binary installation needs the package that contains the module.
WordPress’s warning means the PHP process used by the site cannot load the extension. It does not necessarily mean that every PHP installation on the server lacks it. A command-line binary, Apache module, and PHP-FPM pool can use different PHP versions and different php.ini directories, so the check must match the web runtime.

Check the runtime before changing anything
First establish which PHP version and handler serve the affected domain. This prevents installing mbstring for PHP 8.2 when the domain runs PHP 8.3, or fixing CLI PHP while the site uses a separate FPM pool.
Use WordPress Site Health
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator area.
- Open Tools → Site Health → Info.
- Expand the Server section and record the PHP version and web-server details shown there.
Site Health exposes environment information used by WordPress’s hosting guidance. If the dashboard reports that an extension is missing, treat that report as evidence about the web request, not proof about every PHP binary on the account.

With SSH access, run the commands below as the same user or administrator who manages the site:
php -v
php --ini
php -m | grep mbstring
php -r 'var_dump(extension_loaded("mbstring"));'The final command should print bool(true). The php -v and php --ini output identifies the binary and configuration directory being tested. If the site uses a versioned binary, call that binary explicitly (for example, the PHP executable associated with the domain) rather than relying on the generic php command.
Distinguish Apache, PHP-FPM and panel-managed PHP
- Apache module: Apache loads a PHP module, and its configuration can differ from CLI settings.
- PHP-FPM: the site connects to a PHP-FPM pool whose version and ini files may be independent of CLI PHP.
- Hosting panel: cPanel, Plesk or a similar panel assigns a PHP version per domain and maintains its own package set.
When CLI and Site Health disagree, verify the web/FPM process with a short-lived, access-restricted diagnostic endpoint. Remove it immediately after testing; a public phpinfo() page exposes server paths, versions and configuration.
Choose the method that matches your access

Enable mbstring on a self-managed Linux server
Install a package for the active PHP version
Use your distribution’s package manager and select the package whose version matches the PHP runtime recorded in Site Health. Package names vary by distribution and repository; the essential requirement is that the package belongs to the same PHP major/minor version and handler used by WordPress. Do not install a module for an unused PHP version and assume the site will see it.

After the package manager completes, check the module with the matching PHP binary:
php -m | grep mbstring
php -r 'var_dump(extension_loaded("mbstring"));'If your server has multiple versioned binaries, replace php in these commands with the executable that serves the domain. A successful CLI check confirms only that binary’s configuration.
Build PHP with mbstring when compiling from source
For a source build, include --enable-mbstring in the PHP configure options, then compile and install PHP using your normal build process. The requirement comes directly from the PHP installation documentation: mbstring is a non-default extension and must be explicitly enabled at build time.
Keep the build’s configuration, module directory and ini path consistent with the PHP-FPM or Apache service. Installing a newly compiled CLI binary while the web service still points to an older system PHP will not change WordPress’s environment.

Reload the service that handles web requests
When your operating system or PHP package requires it, reload or restart the PHP-FPM service, Apache, or both. A running process can retain the old module list until it is reloaded. Use the service name associated with the active PHP version; do not restart an unrelated version and assume the domain has changed.
Verify the web process
- Confirm that the matching CLI binary reports
extension_loaded("mbstring")astrue. - Check the site in WordPress at Tools → Site Health → Info and confirm the missing-extension notice has cleared.
- If the notice remains, use a temporary protected diagnostic endpoint to inspect the web process’s PHP version, loaded modules and ini file.
- Delete the diagnostic file immediately after the check and invalidate any cached page that displayed it.
Enable mbstring in cPanel and WHM
cPanel’s documented procedure is performed in WHM by a root administrator. The current workflow is described in cPanel’s “How to install PHP extensions” article, updated September 27, 2026.

- Log in to WHM as root.
- Open Home → Software → EasyApache 4.
- Find the installed profile and click Customize.
- Open PHP Extensions.
- Search for
mbstringand select the extension. - Review the proposed package changes, then click Provision.
- Repeat the process for every PHP version assigned to domains that need the extension.
EasyApache treats extensions as version-specific. A domain running PHP 8.3 will not use the mbstring package installed only for PHP 8.1. Check each domain’s assigned PHP version in the panel and provision the corresponding extension.
Command-line installation in cPanel
cPanel also documents command-line examples using versioned package names such as ea-php74-php-mbstring. The 74 portion is only an example. Substitute the actual PHP version installed on your server; copying that suffix unchanged can install mbstring for the wrong runtime. After package installation, reload the relevant PHP handler if required, then verify from the domain’s web context and in Site Health.

Enable mbstring in Plesk with CloudLinux PHP Selector
For the CloudLinux/Plesk configuration covered by Plesk’s documentation, open CloudLinux Manager → Selector. The troubleshooting article, updated October 12, 2025, is available at Plesk’s mysqli and module guidance.
- Open CloudLinux Manager in Plesk.
- Select Selector.
- Choose the PHP version assigned to the affected domain.
- Enable
mbstring. - Ensure the required
jsonandmysqlimodules are enabled for that version. - Save the selection, then revisit WordPress Site Health.
When Plesk reports a mysqli startup conflict
Plesk’s documented CLI workaround edits the relevant CloudLinux configuration file, such as /opt/alt/phpXX/link/conf/default.ini, where XX corresponds to the assigned PHP version. The procedure calls for uncommenting extension=mbstring.so, enabling extension=json.so, disabling extension=nd_mysqli.so when that conflicting module is present, and adding extension=mysqli.so as shown in Plesk’s article.
Use the exact file for the domain’s PHP version and preserve a backup before editing. A typo in an ini file can prevent PHP from starting, so validate the configuration and check the site immediately after saving. If you do not administer the server, use the Selector interface or ask the provider to apply the documented module set.
What to do on shared hosting
Many shared accounts do not expose WHM, EasyApache, Plesk Selector or an equivalent extension manager. In that situation, the host controls the PHP packages and must make the change.

Please enable the mbstring extension for the PHP version serving my WordPress domain. Please confirm the active PHP version and that mbstring is enabled in the web/PHP-FPM runtime, not only in CLI PHP.
Ask the provider to identify the domain’s PHP version, handler and ini path. Request a confirmation after the change and then recheck WordPress Site Health. If the host cannot enable mbstring or cannot provide a supported PHP environment, compare its platform with WordPress’s current requirements and plan an upgrade or migration. WordPress’s “Before You Install” administration guide, last updated October 14, 2026, explains that the hosting provider supplies the server-side environment.
Verify that WordPress can load the extension
Use all applicable checks rather than relying on one command:
- Runtime check:
extension_loaded('mbstring')returnstruein the PHP runtime serving the site. - Module list: the matching PHP binary’s
php -moutput includesmbstring. - WordPress check: Tools → Site Health no longer reports the missing extension.
- Version check: the extension is enabled for every PHP version actually assigned to relevant domains.
- Security check: every temporary
phpinfo()or diagnostic file has been deleted and is no longer reachable.
Recheck after changing PHP versions. cPanel requires extension installation per PHP version, and a later domain-level switch can move the site to a runtime where mbstring was never installed.
Troubleshoot a missing-extension warning
The package was installed for a different PHP version
This is the most common panel-side cause. Compare the domain’s configured PHP version with the package or module name. In cPanel, provision mbstring separately for the version assigned to the domain. In Plesk or CloudLinux, open Selector and verify the selected version before saving.
CLI reports enabled, but WordPress still reports missing
CLI PHP and web PHP are probably loading different binaries or ini directories. Compare php -v and php --ini with the version and configuration shown by Site Health or a protected web diagnostic. Install or enable mbstring in the web/FPM runtime, then reload that service.

Plesk shows a mysqli dynamic-library error
Follow Plesk’s documented combination: mbstring, json and mysqli enabled, with nd_mysqli disabled when it conflicts. Editing only mbstring will not resolve a separate mysqli startup conflict.
The host refuses to enable the module
Check whether the provider supports WordPress’s current baseline: PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. If the host cannot provide those capabilities, upgrade the account or migrate the site rather than keeping an end-of-life stack.
UTF-8 problems continue after mbstring is enabled
mbstring supports correct multibyte handling, but it is not a universal encoding repair. Persistent symptoms can come from database collation, application code, imported data or another PHP extension. Confirm the database and table settings, inspect the code path that transforms text, and isolate the failing operation instead of assuming mbstring alone caused or solved it.
Check the rest of the WordPress platform
Enabling mbstring addresses one PHP-extension requirement. WordPress’s current requirements page recommends the following baseline for new or maintained installations (information accessed in 2026):

Read the current figures and hosting notes at WordPress.org’s Requirements page. If your provider offers only PHP 7.4 or another unsupported combination, enabling mbstring does not make the overall environment current or secure.
Keep the configuration maintainable
- Record the PHP version, handler and ini path after a successful change.
- When upgrading PHP, install mbstring for the new version before switching the domain.
- After panel or package updates, repeat the Site Health check from the web runtime.
- Do not leave diagnostic scripts,
phpinfo()output or configuration backups in a publicly accessible web directory. - Retest text-heavy workflows—such as editing multilingual content, importing UTF-8 data and generating feeds—after changing PHP modules.
The reliable success condition is specific: the PHP process serving the WordPress domain loads mbstring, WordPress Site Health recognizes the environment, and the server remains on a supported PHP and database stack.
