It is true by default. To disable damage, stop the server, edit universe/worlds/<worldname>/config.json, set "IsFallDamageEnabled": false, save, and restart. You can also try the administrator command /world config falldamage false; because command availability depends on the server build and permissions, verify it with the current /help output. For a lobby or another limited zone, an area-protection plugin can apply a falldamage flag without changing the entire world.

What controls fall damage in Hytale?
The official world-instance schema exposes IsFallDamageEnabled as a Boolean on each world. A Boolean accepts only true or false. The documented default is true, so a world allows fall damage unless its own configuration changes that value. This is a server-world rule, not a universal option in a player’s client settings.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Because the property belongs to the world instance, two worlds on the same server can behave differently. A survival world can keep normal damage while a hub, tutorial, testing, or minigame world disables it. Changing one world’s file does not automatically alter any other world.
Choose the right method
| Method | Scope | Downtime | Dependency | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Edit config.json |
Entire world | Requires a stop and restart | Server files only | A stable, persistent world rule |
/world config falldamage |
The world context accepted by the command | Usually none if supported | Administrator permission and command availability | A quick administrative change |
| Protect Area plugin | Named areas inside a world | Depends on installation and reload procedure | A plugin compatible with your server version | A spawn, lobby, event zone, or other local exception |
Use the file method when you want the rule to be explicit and easy to audit. Use the command when you need a fast change and your build exposes that syntax. Use an area plugin when disabling damage for the whole world would be too broad.

Before editing a world configuration
Get the access you need
You need access to the Hytale server’s files through the host’s file manager, SFTP, or a local server directory. You also need permission to stop and start the process. If you only have in-game moderator privileges, use the command route if it is enabled; you will not be able to edit the JSON file without server-side access.
Identify the exact world
Write down the world name as it appears in the server’s universe/worlds directory. The setting is stored in that world’s folder, so editing a similarly named directory or a template copy will not affect the world players enter.
Stop first and make a backup
Stop the Hytale server cleanly before opening the file. EmeraldHost’s administration guidance warns that edits made while the server is running can be overwritten when the process saves its current state. Copy the original config.json to a separate backup location before changing it. A backup gives you a quick recovery path if a comma, quote, or unrelated setting is damaged.
Use a JSON-aware editor
Use an editor that preserves UTF-8 text and shows matching braces. Do not paste comments into JSON; standard JSON does not support // or /* */ comments. Keep the existing indentation and leave unrelated properties untouched.
Method 1: edit IsFallDamageEnabled in config.json
- Stop the server. Wait until the console or control panel reports that the process has shut down rather than merely closing your terminal window.
- Open the world’s file. Navigate to
universe/worlds/<worldname>/config.json. Replace<worldname>with the actual directory name; do not include the angle brackets. - Find the property. Search for
IsFallDamageEnabled. If it already exists, change only its value. If your version’s generated file does not contain it, add the property inside the top-level JSON object, maintaining valid commas and quotation marks. - Set the desired value. Use
falseto turn fall damage off ortrueto turn it on. Boolean values are lowercase and are not wrapped in quotation marks. - Save and validate. Run the editor’s JSON validation, if available. A missing comma or an extra trailing comma can prevent the server from reading the file.
- Start the server again. Watch the startup log for configuration or JSON parse errors before letting players connect.
- Test in the affected world. Use a controlled fall with a character whose health can be restored. Confirm the result in the world you edited, not merely in a different hub or default world.
Disable fall damage
{
"IsFallDamageEnabled": false
}
The snippet shows the relevant property in isolation. Your real file will contain additional world settings, so do not replace the complete file with this short example. Insert or edit the property within the existing top-level object.

Enable fall damage
{
"IsFallDamageEnabled": true
}
Setting the value to true explicitly records the normal damage behavior even if a future generated configuration would otherwise supply the documented default. Keep the value unquoted: true is a Boolean, while "true" is text and may not be accepted as the setting.
Apply it to more than one world
Repeat the edit separately for every world that should share the rule. The official server manual places a separate config.json under each world directory, and the world-instance reference defines the property at that same per-world level. A change in universe/worlds/lobby/config.json, for example, does not rewrite the file for a survival world.
Method 2: use the administrator command
EmeraldHost documents the following command form:
/world config falldamage false
/world config falldamage true
The first form disables fall damage and the second enables it. Run the command from the server console or in-game with the administrator permission required by your build. The command route is useful when you need to change a live world without taking the process offline.
Confirm the command on your build
This syntax comes from a hosting guide rather than the official asset reference. Hytale server commands can change between builds, and a permission system may hide administrative subcommands. Before relying on it, run /help (or the console’s help command) and look for the current /world configuration syntax. If the help output does not list falldamage, do not guess at alternate spellings; use the file method or consult the documentation shipped with your server version.
Check the command’s context
Make sure the command is being applied to the intended world. A command issued while you are in a lobby may affect that world context rather than the survival world. If the command interface offers a world argument or requires you to stand in the target world, follow the syntax shown by your server’s help output. Record the command and the target world in your administration notes so another operator can reproduce the change.

Handle permissions and feedback
An “unknown command” response indicates unavailable syntax, while a “no permission” response means the command exists but your account or console context cannot use it. A command that returns success but produces no gameplay change should be checked in the affected world and then compared with the world’s config.json after a clean restart. Do not assume that a successful chat message proves the setting was persisted.
Method 3: protect only a lobby or named area
The base IsFallDamageEnabled property applies to an entire world. If players should take damage in the wilderness but not at a spawn platform, lobby, parkour staging area, or event arena, an area-level system is a better fit.
The Protect Area plugin documents a falldamage combat flag for named areas. Its Boolean-like values include true and false, allowing an administrator to turn fall damage off inside the protected area while leaving the world’s general rule unchanged.
Plan the area rule
- Define the area boundaries so every part of the safe floor, stairs, launch pads, and nearby teleport landing zone is covered.
- Decide which value the world uses outside the area. The area flag should be treated as an exception, not as a replacement for a clearly documented world default.
- Check whether your server build and the plugin release are compatible before installing or updating anything.
Install and test cautiously
Follow the plugin’s own installation and area-definition instructions, then set the named area’s falldamage flag to false. Restart or reload only by the procedure supported by that plugin and your server version. Test from inside the area, directly on its boundary, and just outside it. If the behavior changes at an unexpected location, enlarge or redraw the area rather than stacking overlapping rules blindly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Know what the plugin does not change
An area flag does not turn off fall damage for every player everywhere. Players who leave the protected region continue to follow the world’s rule and any other compatible combat systems. Plugin updates, removed areas, or version incompatibility can also remove the exception, so keep the area definition and intended value in your server documentation.

Making a Hytale lobby safe from falls
When the lobby has its own world
If the lobby is a dedicated world and no one should take fall damage there, set that world’s IsFallDamageEnabled value to false. This is the simplest arrangement because every location in the lobby receives the same rule. Keep gameplay worlds separate if they need normal damage.
When the lobby shares a gameplay world
Do not disable the world-wide property merely to protect a small spawn. Use an area-protection feature such as Protect Area and assign the falldamage flag to the spawn region. Include teleport arrival points and elevated decorative platforms in the area design, then test the edge so a player cannot avoid the rule by standing a few blocks outside the intended boundary.

For a temporary event
For a time-limited event in a whole world, the command route may be convenient if the current build supports it. Write down the original value before changing it, announce the scope to other operators, and restore the previous value when the event ends. If the event is confined to one zone, leave the world setting alone and use an area rule instead.

Players still take damage after editing the file
- Confirm that the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward. A running process may have rewritten the old value.
- Check that you edited the active world’s directory, including capitalization and spelling of the world name.
- Verify that the property is inside the correct top-level JSON object and that its value is the Boolean
false, not the string"false". - Look for a startup parse error. If the server could not read the file, restore the backup, correct the JSON, and restart again.
- Make sure the test character is actually in the edited world. A portal, queue, or teleport may have placed the player in another world with its own configuration.
The server refuses to start after the edit
Restore the backup immediately, start the server, and confirm that the problem was limited to the edited file. Then reapply the change with a JSON-aware editor. Typical causes are a missing comma between properties, a trailing comma before a closing brace, mismatched quotation marks, or accidentally deleting a neighboring setting. Keep a copy of the corrected file before making another change.
The command is unknown
Check the current /help output and the console command list. The documented command may not be included in your release, may use a different syntax, or may be restricted to the console. Use the configuration-file method when the command is absent rather than repeatedly trying unverified variants.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The command is denied
Run it from the server console or grant only the specific administrator permission required by your permission system. Avoid giving broad privileges just to change one world rule. After permission changes, reconnect or restart the command session if your server caches permission data.
An area remains unsafe
Check that the player is inside the named area, that the plugin is enabled, and that the area flag is spelled falldamage as documented by the plugin. Test a point well inside the region and then move outward one section at a time. If the plugin reports a compatibility or load error, remove the area override and use the whole-world setting until a compatible release is available.
Only some worlds changed
This is expected when only one per-world file or command context was changed. List every world that should share the policy, update each one deliberately, and test them individually. Do not copy an entire configuration file from one world to another because unrelated world settings may differ.
Verification checklist for administrators
- Identify the intended scope: one world or a named area.
- Record the original setting and make a backup before editing.
- For file changes, stop the server, edit the correct
universe/worlds/<worldname>/config.json, validate JSON, and restart. - For commands, verify the syntax and required permission with the current
/helpoutput. - Test a controlled fall inside the target world or area.
- Test a second world or a point outside the protected area to ensure you did not change more than intended.
- Review the startup or plugin log for parse, loading, or compatibility errors.
- Document the final value, date, operator, affected world or area, and rollback file.
Operational practices that prevent surprises
Keep world policies explicit
Store a short administration record alongside your backups stating which worlds allow fall damage and which do not. This prevents a later operator from treating the default as evidence of the intended design, especially when a server contains several hubs or test worlds.
Separate permanent and temporary changes
A file edit is appropriate for a permanent policy because the value remains visible in the world’s configuration. A command can be useful for a live event, but record the old value and the restoration step before using it. If an area plugin supplies the exception, record the area’s name, boundaries, and flag in the same change log.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Recheck after server updates
After upgrading Hytale or a related plugin, confirm that the property still appears in the generated world file, that the command still appears in /help, and that the area flag still loads. Version changes can affect command availability or plugin compatibility even when the JSON value itself is unchanged.
Key takeaways
For a dependable whole-world rule, edit IsFallDamageEnabled in the target world’s config.json, using false to disable or true to enable, and restart after saving. For a quick live change, verify whether /world config falldamage false|true is supported by your build. For a safe spawn inside an otherwise normal world, use a compatible area-protection plugin and its falldamage flag.
