Update Elden Ring first, then check ray tracing and mouse-control software. Bandai Namco’s current PC notice (May 28, 2026) lists stability fixes for freezing, unexpected termination and rendering problems, with App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. Version 1.15 also warns that unintentionally enabled ray tracing and third-party applications that control mouse behavior can produce unstable framerates. These checks are reversible and should come before buying hardware.
Why Elden Ring can stutter even on a computer that meets the requirements
A game can satisfy its published CPU, GPU and memory requirements yet still hitch. A minimum specification describes a baseline for launching and running the game; it does not promise a fixed frame time in every area. A drop that repeats in the same location may be caused by game-engine or asset-streaming behavior, while a sudden change after an update can point to configuration, software or installation data.

Bandai Namco has acknowledged frame-rate problems in its update history. Version 1.02 included the note “Fixed frame rate drops under certain conditions.” Later, Version 1.15 identified two configuration-specific causes: ray tracing that was enabled unintentionally on some PC versions, and third-party applications that control mouse behavior. The May 28, 2026 notice records additional fixes for freezing, unexpected closing and rendering issues. That history means a patch or setting change can solve a documented cause, but no single hardware purchase is guaranteed to remove every hitch.

1. Update the game and confirm both version numbers
- Open Steam and let Elden Ring finish any pending download. Restart Steam if the update does not begin.
- Launch the game and read the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. values on the title screen. The current PC notice lists App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1.
- If either value is older, close the game, check the Steam download queue, and launch again after the update completes.
Do not compare only the game’s main menu appearance; the title-screen version labels are the useful check. A current build cannot undo every performance limitation, but it ensures that documented stability and rendering fixes are present before deeper troubleshooting.
2. Turn off unintentionally enabled ray tracing
Ray tracing can be enabled after a configuration change even when you did not deliberately switch it on. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.15 notes say that, on some PC configurations, this can cause unstable performance.
- Open the title screen or pause the game.
- Select System, then open the Graphics tab.
- Find Ray Tracing Quality.
- Set it to OFF if it is enabled unexpectedly.
- Apply the setting, restart the game, and retest the location where the hitch occurred.
If ray tracing was already off, leave it off while testing other causes. Do not change several graphics options at once, because you will not know which change affected frame pacing.

3. Test without mouse-control utilities and similar background tools
The official Version 1.15 guidance specifically names third-party applications that control mouse behavior as a possible source of unstable framerate. Examples include mouse remapping suites, macro utilities and software that injects custom input behavior. Overlays and other background utilities are not stated by Bandai Namco to cause every stutter, but disabling them one at a time is a practical isolation test.
- Exit Elden Ring.
- Close the mouse-control or macro application from its own menu and, if necessary, its notification-area icon.
- Temporarily disable nonessential overlays or capture tools one at a time. Keep a note of each change.
- Launch Elden Ring and repeat the same movement and combat sequence.
- Re-enable utilities individually after testing. If stutter returns immediately after one program is enabled, leave that program off while playing or look for an update from its publisher.
This test is reversible and does not require uninstalling software. It also prevents a common diagnostic mistake: attributing a game-specific hitch to the graphics card when an input utility is changing frame delivery.

If your system is below the minimum, persistent low performance is expected and a hardware change may be necessary. If it meets or exceeds the recommended list, continue measuring rather than assuming a new GPU, SSD or memory kit will cure a repeatable hitch in one area.

Measure the drop before changing hardware
Use your GPU or Windows performance monitor to record what happens during a drop. The useful question is not only “What is the average FPS?” but also “Which resource is limiting the frame at the exact moment of the hitch?”
- GPU utilization: A sustained high value during a drop points toward graphics workload or a graphics setting, while a sharp utilization fall during a hitch suggests the GPU was waiting on another part of the system.
- VRAM use: Note whether memory is near the card’s capacity when the problem occurs.
- System RAM: Record total use and whether Windows is approaching its available-memory limit.
- CPU frame time: A spike indicates that the processor or a process running on it is taking longer to prepare a frame.
- Location and repeatability: Write down the map area, activity and direction of travel. A drop that repeats at the same point is different from a system-wide slowdown.
Capture a short before-and-after note for each test: version numbers, ray-tracing state, background utilities enabled, observed frame rate and the exact location. This record prevents circular troubleshooting and gives useful evidence if you later contact support.

Verify the Steam installation when files may be damaged
File verification is appropriate when the game has rendering errors, failed updates, missing data or crashes that began after an interrupted download. Official patch and support guidance use Steam file verification for certain PC problems. It is a repair check for inconsistent installation data, not a guaranteed cure for traversal stutter caused by the game or hardware.
- Exit Elden Ring.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Elden Ring and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Allow Steam to reacquire any files it reports as missing or damaged, then launch the game and repeat your test.
Verification can take time and may re-download data. Do not interrupt Steam while it is replacing files. If verification reports no problem and the same hitch remains in the same location, move to measurement and configuration checks instead of repeating verification indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the next action by the suspected cause
| Likely cause | Best first action | Risk and reversibility | Expected scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out-of-date game build | Install Steam updates and confirm App Ver. 1.16.2 / Regulation Ver. 1.16.1 | Low risk; update can be reversed only by using supported Steam options | Game-wide fixes included in the build |
| Ray tracing enabled unexpectedly | System → Graphics → Ray Tracing Quality → OFF | Immediate and fully reversible | Graphics workload and frame stability |
| Mouse-control or input utility | Close it, then test with utilities re-enabled one at a time | Low risk; no uninstall required | Input-related frame pacing |
| Damaged or inconsistent files | Steam Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files | Low risk; may require a download | Installation-specific rendering or launch faults |
| Under-spec or consistently saturated hardware | Compare measured CPU, GPU, VRAM and RAM use with the published baseline | Hardware purchase is costly and not automatically effective | Potentially system-wide, depending on the limiting component |
When a hardware upgrade is—and is not—justified
Upgrade is easier to justify when the limit is repeatable and measurable
A part upgrade has a rational case when your system is below Steam’s minimum requirements or monitoring shows the same component consistently saturated during ordinary play. For example, a graphics card that remains at its practical limit while VRAM is exhausted can constrain settings across many areas. Likewise, insufficient system memory can affect the whole PC rather than one Elden Ring location.

Do not buy parts solely to treat an engine-level hitch
If the computer meets the requirements, utilization is not consistently maxed out, and the drop happens at the same traversal point after updates, ray tracing checks and file verification, a new GPU or SSD may not remove it. Bandai Namco’s patch history confirms that some drops are condition-specific software behavior. Test first, keep your measurements, and treat a purchase as a broader PC decision rather than a guaranteed Elden Ring fix.
What to do when stutter remains
- Confirm the title-screen versions again after every patch.
- Ensure Ray Tracing Quality remains OFF unless you intentionally enabled it and have measured the result.
- Run a clean test without mouse-control software, macros and overlays, then restore utilities individually.
- Repeat the same route while recording GPU utilization, VRAM, RAM and CPU frame time.
- Verify Steam files once if corruption or rendering errors are plausible.
- Use the evidence to decide whether the issue is game-location-specific, input-related, installation-related or a sustained hardware limit.
A consistent location-specific hitch after these checks should be documented with the area, version numbers and measurements when reporting it to the game’s support channels. Avoid promising yourself that any single setting, patch or product will eliminate every form of stutter; the documented causes cover several different failure modes.
