The PSSR option is on by default; the PS4 option is opt-in and requires a compatible display. Neither guarantees the same improvement in every game.
Check the PS5 Pro setting for compatible PS5 games
Sony says Enhance PSSR Image Quality is enabled by default on PS5 Pro. To confirm its state or switch it off, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony lists the option for consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. PlayStation Support’s resolution guidance explains the setting and menu path.

This option applies to certain PS5 games that support PSSR, not to every PS5 title. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page lists supported games, and Sony’s March 16, 2026 upgraded PSSR announcement describes the rollout to titles including Control, Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Crimson Desert and others. Availability changes as games are added, so check the live list for a specific title.
Even when a game is compatible, the visual result depends on that game’s implementation. Sony says results vary by title; enabling the option does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate or visible change.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Enable image-quality enhancement for PS4 games
The PS4 option is separate from PSSR and applies to supported PS4 games. To select it, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then choose Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. Unlike the PSSR setting, it is an opt-in feature.
Sony says this option is available on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and requires a screen supporting 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If gameplay behaves unexpectedly, Sony advises turning the option off. See PlayStation Support’s PS4 game enhancement instructions for the requirements and troubleshooting note.
Find games that support PS5 Pro enhancements
For PS4 titles, Sony directs players to PlayStation Store > Collections > PS5 Pro Enhanced, or to search the Store for “PS5 Pro”. For PS5 games using PSSR, check Sony’s current supported-title list and the game’s own information. A game being playable on PS5 Pro does not by itself mean it supports PSSR or the PS4 enhancement option.

Check your display before changing hardware
You do not need to buy a new TV just to enable these console options. For the PS4 enhancement setting, the stated screen requirement is 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. For other output goals, check the console, display and specific game together: Sony describes compatible games reaching 4K output and up to 120 fps with a 4K TV, but that is a capability rather than a guarantee for every title. A 120 Hz display matters only if the game and output configuration support the corresponding mode.
PS5 Pro’s options and their results are game-dependent: verify the appropriate setting, confirm that the title supports it, and use the display requirements that apply to that feature.
