Enable Palworld dedicated-server PvP by editing the active PalWorldSettings.ini file while the server is stopped, setting bIsPvP=True, bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage=True, and bEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer=True, then saving and restarting. All three switches are required together; changing only one or editing the default template will not enable player combat.

What you need to change
Pocketpair documents PvP as a trial feature and says it is not covered by official support. Treat the setting as a ruleset change, not a small combat toggle: enabling it also changes base defense, loot access, building behavior, travel, visibility, missions, and several damage rules.

Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown above. After the restart, have two players join and test an attack rather than assuming that a successful boot means PvP is active.

Stop the server before editing
Shut down the dedicated server cleanly before opening its settings. A running process can rewrite configuration data when it exits, potentially replacing or ignoring edits made while it was online. Make the change with the server stopped, save the file, and start the server only after the new values are in place.
Find the active PalWorldSettings.ini
The file you must edit is the platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini, not DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. The default file is a template; changing it by itself does not apply settings to a running world.

Windows dedicated server
For a standard Steam installation, open:

For a Linux installation, open:
steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.iniIf the directory or file is missing
Start the dedicated server once, then stop it. Pocketpair’s setup documentation says the configuration directories are created after startup. If the target file still does not exist, copy DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini into the appropriate WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory and rename the copy to PalWorldSettings.ini before editing it. Leave the original default template untouched so it remains available as a clean template.

Confirm that the path belongs to the server instance you actually launch. Multiple Steam libraries, container mounts, or separate test installations can leave you editing a valid-looking file that the running process never reads.
Enable the three PvP switches
Open the active file in a plain-text editor and add or change the entries so they read exactly:

bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage=True
bEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer=TrueDo not put these lines only in the default template. If an entry already exists with False, replace its value rather than creating a second conflicting line. Save the file without changing the .ini extension or introducing rich-text formatting.

Restart and verify the change
- Stop the dedicated server and wait for its process to finish.
- Open the platform-specific
PalWorldSettings.iniunderPal/Saved/Config. - Check that all three required keys are present with the value
True. - Save the file.
- Start the dedicated server again and wait until it is ready for connections.
- Have two players from different guilds join the same world.
- Use a controlled test area to confirm that one player’s attack reduces the other player’s health.
- Check a second effect, such as a base Pal reacting to an intruder or a guild chest being accessible, to verify that the full PvP ruleset loaded.
Do not test with only one player, and do not infer success from a server-list label. The practical test is damage between two connected players after a complete restart.
What changes when PvP is active
The three switches enable a package of interconnected rules. Players should understand these effects before joining a PvP world.
Player and Pal combat
- Players can harm one another.
- Base Pals engage hostile players who trespass into a base.
- Base Pals engage enemies over a wider area than under non-PvP behavior.
- Damage received by airborne players and ride Pals is increased.
- Player damage to summoned Pals and base Pals is reduced.
- Some weapons receive PvP-specific range and damage tuning.
Guild bases, chests, and structures
- Players can access chests owned by other guilds.
- Melee damage to structures built by other players is reduced, so a melee attack does not necessarily destroy a structure at the same rate as ordinary combat damage.
- The minimum distance between bases increases.
- The distance at which player names and damage values appear changes.
- A notification is sent when a base is attacked.
- Building or repairing inside a base is disabled while that base is in battle.
World progression
Missions are disabled in PvP mode. Account for that loss of progression content when deciding whether to convert an existing cooperative world or create a separate PvP world.

Use the official balancing controls deliberately
Pocketpair’s examples provide individual controls rather than a single universal balance preset. Apply only the restrictions that match your community’s expectations, and document them for players before the wipe or season begins.

Map-display settings can show PvP-item counts at bases and on players. If you enable reward drops, decide whether those counts should be visible; visibility changes how easily opponents can identify a guild carrying or storing rewards.

There is no single correct PvP configuration. Decide the following six questions first, then place the corresponding settings in your configuration plan:

- How lethal should combat be? Keep the required switches, then decide whether airborne and ride-Pal vulnerability, reduced Pal damage, and weapon-specific tuning produce the pace you want.
- What happens on death? Choose ordinary drops or the full-loot combination of
DeathPenalty=AllandbCanPickupOtherGuildDeathPenaltyDrop=True. - Can players escape by travel or logout? Consider
bEnableFastTravelOnlyBaseCamp=TrueandbExistPlayerAfterLogout=Truetogether if combat should continue despite those actions. - Which technologies are allowed? Use
DenyTechnologyListfor mobility and storage technologies that would overpower a server’s economy or defenses. - How large can a guild and its territory become? Set membership, base, and structure limits such as the documented examples of 4 players, 2 bases, and 1,000 structures.
- Should PvP kills create a separate objective? Turn on the additional drop only if players understand what the “Champion’s Emblem” reward means and how its map visibility will work.
Write the chosen values down and announce them before opening the server. Changing death drops, logout behavior, or guild limits after players have invested time can be as disruptive as a wipe.

Troubleshoot PvP that does not work
No player damage after restart
- Reopen the active file and verify all three required keys:
bIsPvP=True,bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage=True, andbEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer=True. - Check for spelling errors, duplicate entries, or a later duplicate line set to
False. - Confirm that you edited
WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.inion Windows orLinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.inion Linux. - Make sure you did not edit only
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini; that template is not the live configuration. - Stop and restart the server after saving. A live session will not reliably adopt the change without a restart.
The expected folder does not exist
Start the server once, allow it to initialize, and stop it. The startup process creates the platform-specific configuration directories. Then copy the default template into the newly created target directory, rename it PalWorldSettings.ini, and apply the three switches.
Some PvP effects are missing
Player damage, base defense, chest access, and the other changes are part of the same documented trial ruleset, but they may be easiest to observe under different conditions. Test with players from separate guilds, enter a base boundary, inspect a guild-owned chest, and trigger a base attack. Also remember that missions are disabled, so mission availability is not a sign that the setting failed.
Settings revert after shutdown
Stop the server before editing and verify that the account running the server can write to the configuration directory. Recheck the file after the next shutdown. If your host uses a container or service panel, ensure its mounted path maps to the same Pal/Saved/Config directory used by the process you launch.
Operational checklist
- Back up the current
PalWorldSettings.inibefore changing it. - Stop the server completely.
- Edit the platform-specific active file, never only the default template.
- Set all three required Boolean values to
True. - Save as plain text and preserve the filename.
- Restart the server.
- Test player damage with two players from different guilds.
- Test at least one non-combat effect, such as base defense or guild-chest access.
- Publish your death, travel, logout, technology, guild, building, respawn, and reward rules before inviting players.
Because Pocketpair classifies PvP as a trial feature without official support, keep a backup and expect to troubleshoot configuration or gameplay behavior yourself when operating a PvP world.
