What you are hosting
All in One [Modded One Block] is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 built around a One Block progression with 12 phases. Minecraft 1.16.5 released on January 14, 2021, so every part of the installation must remain on that Minecraft generation rather than a newer 1.18, 1.19, or 1.20 server.
The project page lists pack release 1.5.4b as its latest listed release, but the dedicated server file used for this setup is AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zip. Treat those as separate version labels: download the server pack that matches the release you intend to run, and do not silently copy files from a different pack revision into it.

- A preinstalled Forge server, version 36.2.34.
- Pack overrides such as
config,defaultconfigs, andkubejs. start_4GB.batfor Windows.start_4GB.shfor Linux. The pack listing marks this Linux script as not tested.
The archive was uploaded on May 3, 2022. Its 4 GB scripts are launch defaults, not a tested player-capacity guarantee. No independent benchmark or official maximum-player figure is published for this pack.
Choose where the server will run
You have two practical choices. A computer or virtual private server that you administer gives you complete access to the files, Java runtime, Forge arguments, backups, firewall, and update schedule. A managed host supplies a control panel and a public endpoint, reducing machine and network maintenance but limiting how much of the underlying system you can change.

Prepare the host
Use a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only for this world, for example C:MinecraftAllInOneServer on Windows or /srv/minecraft/all-in-one on Linux. Keeping the server separate from the client installation prevents accidental deletion of the world and makes backups and upgrades understandable.

Install a compatible Java runtime
The pack listing says Minecraft 1.16.5 works with Java versions 8 through 11, except Java 8.0.321 and Java 11.0.14. Those exclusions are pack-specific guidance, not a promise that every later Java release will work. Check the runtime that the server will actually use:
java -versionIf the output shows one of the excluded builds, install another Java 8 or Java 11 build and make the launch script use that executable. On a machine with several Java installations, an interactive shell may report one version while a batch or service file starts another, so verify from the same account and script context that will run the server.

The supplied scripts are named for a 4 GB allocation. That is the pack author’s starting configuration, not a measured capacity target. Leave memory for the operating system and other applications; allocating all physical RAM to Java can make both the server and the host unstable. If you edit the command, preserve the Forge-generated arguments and change only the memory values you understand.
Download and extract the correct server pack
- Obtain
AllinOneServer-1.5.1.zipfrom the pack’s server-file listing. - Extract the archive directly into the dedicated server folder. Avoid an extra nested directory such as
AllInOneServerAllinOneServer, which makes scripts and paths confusing. - Confirm that the Forge server files,
config,defaultconfigs,kubejs, and the launch scripts are in the same top-level directory. - Do not merge in a client-only
modsfolder, a different Minecraft version, or a Fabric/NeoForge installation. The supplied server is Forge 36.2.34 for Minecraft 1.16.5.
The client profile and the dedicated server are not interchangeable. A client download can omit server libraries, startup arguments, or server-side overrides, so starting from the dedicated archive avoids missing-file errors later.

Start the server for the first time
Windows
- Open the server folder in File Explorer.
- Double-click
start_4GB.bat. If Windows displays a security prompt, allow the file only if you obtained the archive from the expected source. - Watch the console until Forge finishes creating its files or stops with an error. The first run normally creates
eula.txtand other world and configuration files. - Close the console after it has generated the files. Do not repeatedly launch it while the first process is still writing.
Linux
- Open a terminal in the server directory.
- Make the supplied script executable with
chmod +x start_4GB.sh. - Run
./start_4GB.shand watch the output. The pack listing marks this script as not tested, so treat a script failure as a reason to inspect its paths and Java command rather than as proof that the pack itself is broken. - For a long-running process, use a service manager or terminal multiplexer only after an ordinary foreground start works.
If you need a custom command, retain the Forge server’s generated arguments. Replacing the complete command with a generic vanilla-server command can omit Forge libraries and cause mod-loading failures.
Accept the EULA and configure the server
Accept the EULA
- After the first launch, open
eula.txtin the server folder. - Read the license terms, then change
eula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree. - Save the file and start the same script again.
The server will not proceed to a playable world until the file contains the accepted value.

Set the basic properties
Stop the server before editing server.properties, then set the options your group needs:
motd: the text shown in the multiplayer list.difficulty: the desired difficulty level.gamemode: the default mode for players who join.pvp: whether player-versus-player damage is enabled.max-players: the connection limit you want to enforce.server-port: the TCP port used for normal Minecraft connections. The standard default is 25565.server-ip: normally leave this blank. Fill it only when you have a specific local-interface binding requirement.
Save the file, restart the server, and allow it to reach a stable “done” state before testing from another machine. Changing properties while the process is running can be overwritten when it shuts down.

Test locally before opening the internet
Testing on the host computer
Install the matching 1.16.5 Forge client and the same pack files. In Multiplayer, add a server with the address localhost. A successful local login proves that Java, Forge, the server files, and the local world can start without involving the router.
Testing on the same home network
From another computer on the same LAN, use the host’s private IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.25:25565. If this fails while localhost works, check the host firewall and confirm that the server is listening on the configured port. Do not troubleshoot port forwarding until a local-network connection succeeds.

Let friends connect from outside your home
Open the host firewall
Create an inbound rule for the server’s TCP port in the operating system firewall. With the default configuration, that is TCP 25565. On Linux systems using UFW, an example is sudo ufw allow 25565/tcp; use the equivalent rule for your distribution and any non-default port.
Forward the router port
- Give the server computer a stable private address, either with a DHCP reservation or a manually managed address.
- Log in to the router and create a port-forwarding rule from the external port you will publish to the host’s private address and the same internal server port.
- Keep the protocol set to TCP for normal Minecraft Java connections.
- Check
server.propertiesfor the actual port before saving the router rule. Mojang’s help guidance also calls out the port listed inquery.portwhen query access is being used; do not forward an unrelated number by assumption. - Restart the server if you changed its port, then test from a connection that is not on the same home network, such as a friend’s internet connection.
Give trusted friends your public address and port only. A private address such as 192.168.x.x is not reachable from the wider internet. Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents unsolicited inbound connections; if your router has no usable public address, a managed endpoint or a tunnel solution may be necessary.

Keep the exposure narrow
- Forward only the port you need; do not expose remote-administration panels to the internet.
- Use an allow-list or operator controls for people you trust.
- Turn off query features you do not use, and avoid publishing the server’s administrative credentials.
- Check the router and firewall after firmware or operating-system updates, because rules can be disabled or reset.
Make every player’s client identical
Every player must run Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 with Forge and the same pack revision, mod files, configuration, and scripts. A mismatch commonly produces “missing mods,” registry errors, or a disconnect during login.
- Install the same client pack release that the server expects.
- Do not add optional mods on only one side unless the pack explicitly supports them.
- Keep
config,defaultconfigs, andkubejsaligned when distributing a changed configuration. - When a player gets a mismatch, compare the file list and versions before changing Java or router settings.
Back up the world before changing mods or configuration. Removing a mod that owns blocks, items, entities, or dimensions can make existing chunks unsafe to load.

Back up a stopped server
- Tell players to log out and stop the server cleanly from its console.
- Copy the entire world folder, not just individual region files.
- Also copy
server.properties,ops.json,whitelist.json,banned-players.json,banned-ips.json, and the pack’s configuration folders. - Store at least one backup outside the server machine and label it with the date and pack version.
- Restart and perform a test login after the backup completes.
Change versions cautiously
The listed project release and server archive do not have the same number: the project page lists 1.5.4b, while the available server file is 1.5.1. Do not “upgrade” by dropping a newer client profile onto the older server. Make a separate copy, install the intended server archive, and test a backup world before inviting players.
Plan for restarts
Announce maintenance, stop the server from its console, and wait for the save to finish before rebooting the host. On Linux, verify that the service account can read and write the server folder. On Windows, prevent sleep on a machine that is expected to host continuously, but still schedule operating-system updates during an announced maintenance window.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The script closes immediately
- Run it from an open terminal so the error remains visible.
- Check
java -versionand replace excluded Java builds 8.0.321 or 11.0.14. - Confirm that the script and Forge files are in the same directory.
- On Linux, verify executable permission and inspect the script’s Java path.
The server stops at a Forge or mod error
- Confirm that the server is Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge 36.2.34.
- Restore the original
config,defaultconfigs, andkubejsfrom a clean server archive if they were edited. - Remove files copied from another pack or loader.
- Read the first error in the log; later stack traces are often consequences rather than the cause.
Local play works but friends cannot join
- Test the host firewall rule with the server running.
- Confirm the router forwards to the host’s current private address.
- Check that the external port matches
server-portand that the friend is using the public address, not the LAN address. - Check for carrier-grade NAT or a second router creating double NAT.
A friend is kicked during login
- Compare Minecraft, Forge, pack, mod, and configuration versions exactly.
- Check whether the server has enough free memory for the world and current player load; the included 4 GB setting is only a starting default.
- Have the player remove stale client-side copies and reinstall the matching profile rather than mixing files manually.
How much hardware do you need?
The supplied package does not publish a tested RAM recommendation, benchmark, or maximum player count. Start with the included 4 GB launch setting, monitor whether the host swaps or the server’s tick rate degrades, and adjust only when the machine has spare memory. More RAM cannot compensate for an incompatible Java build, mismatched mods, slow storage, or a saturated internet upload link.
A wired network connection and an SSD generally make administration easier, but they do not change the pack’s version requirements. For a home host, measure available upload bandwidth while players are online and keep the machine free of heavy background workloads. For a VPS or managed service, verify the advertised memory, CPU allocation, storage, backup policy, public IPv4 availability, and explicit support for Forge 36.2.34 on Minecraft 1.16.5 before paying.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting: a decision checklist
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a computer or VPS that can stay online.
- You want complete control over files, scripts, backups, and Java.
- You can configure a firewall and, for a home connection, router forwarding.
- You are comfortable diagnosing Forge and modpack errors yourself.
Choose managed hosting when
- You need a ready public endpoint without home-router configuration.
- Nobody wants to maintain the operating system, Java runtime, or routine backups.
- You accept control-panel limits and a recurring charge.
- The provider confirms support for this exact 1.16.5 Forge pack rather than only generic Forge servers.
Whichever route you choose, retain an independent copy of the world and verify how to download it. A control panel is convenient, but it is not a substitute for a backup you can restore elsewhere.
