To enable Steam Families, create a family in Steam’s Family Management area and invite the household members who should join. Steam Families is available to all users and can be managed through the Steam Client, a mobile device, or a web browser. Once members join, eligible games are shared automatically; each person keeps their own saves and achievements, while purchases remain owned by the account that bought them.
Before you create a Steam Family
Steam Families replaced the earlier Family Sharing and Family View features and became available to all users on September 11, 2024. Steam describes it as intended for a household of up to six close family members: the person creating the family plus as many as five invitees. Steam’s announcement and FAQ explain the feature and its limits.

- Agree on who should join before sending invitations. Membership changes are subject to one-year cooldowns.
- Check whether the games your household wants to play are eligible; not every Steam game can be shared.
- Consider how many people may want to play the same game at once. Simultaneous access to a title depends on how many copies the family owns.
How to enable Steam Families
Steam confirms family management is available in the Steam Client, on mobile, and in a web browser. The exact menu placement can change, so use the current Family Management area shown in your Steam account rather than relying on an older screenshot or beta-era directions.
- Open Steam using the Client, mobile device, or browser and sign in to the account that will create the family.
- Open the current Family Management area in the account interface.
- Create a Steam Family and invite up to five other members. Have everyone review the invitation and the membership terms before joining.
- Once invited accounts have joined, eligible games appear for family members in their libraries automatically.

What household game sharing does—and does not—change
Sharing gives family members access to eligible games; it does not transfer ownership. The account that purchased a game remains its owner. Each player uses their own account and keeps separate save games and achievements.
Playing at the same time
Family members can play different games from the family library at the same time. To play the same game simultaneously, the family needs multiple copies of that game. For example, one copy of a game supports one family member playing it at a time; two copies allow two members to play it at once.

Checking whether a game can be shared
Developers decide whether their games are eligible, and technical limitations can also prevent sharing. Steam identifies games that require an additional third-party key, account, or subscription as examples that may not work with family sharing. Check the individual game’s Steam Store page before assuming it will be available to the family.
Offline play
Offline play is possible for family-library games that support sharing. Steam’s announcement does not establish that every shared game works offline, so check the specific game’s requirements if offline access matters.

Family roles and controls
Steam Families has adult and child roles. Adults can manage invitations and restrictions, including restricting access to games or Steam features, setting playtime limits, reviewing reports, and responding to child requests. Children cannot manage the family.

Steam says an adult must wait one year after joining a family before creating or joining another one. A family slot that becomes vacant also has a one-year cooldown before another member can take that slot. Decide who should join before accepting invitations, particularly if someone may soon need to switch families.
