Unlike a battle royale, the goal was not simply to be the last squad standing. This guide explains how missions, loot, and exfil worked in the Warzone 2.0 version, and separates those mechanics from the new DMZ Activision announced for Modern Warfare 4.
How did the original Call of Duty DMZ work?
The original DMZ, introduced with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare II, was described by Activision as an “open-world, narrative-focused extraction mode.” A run followed a simple loop: deploy, decide what to do, gather useful items, and extract before you were killed or the match ended. You could focus on objectives, explore, fight AI combatants or other Operators, or steer clear of fights when possible. Activision’s launch-era overview and its DMZ overview lay out the mode’s original systems.
The extraction objective changed the stakes of a match. Finding valuable gear mattered only if you could get it out; staying in the exclusion zone longer could create more opportunities, but also gave enemies more time to stop you.
What missions and activities could you pursue?
Before deploying, players could select faction missions. The launch-era factions named by Activision were Legion, White Lotus, and Black Mous. Missions supplied objectives and helped advance the mode’s story, but they were not the only reason to move around the map.

- TACTICAL DMZ OPERATIONS — Deploy behind enemy lines as an off‑the‑books asset, making high‑risk decisions on objectives and extraction in a dynamic mode where every run counts.
Runs could also involve contracts, world events, and points of interest. You could change plans as a match unfolded: complete a mission, explore an area, engage another squad, or avoid contact and prioritize extraction. The mode did not require every squad to follow one fixed route.
How did loot and death work?
The backpack could hold weapons, equipment, cash, and valuables. Players chose items from containers to place in the pack. If they extracted successfully, those items went into storage between matches; if they died, nonpermanent items in the backpack were at risk of being lost.

That made looting a risk-and-reward decision rather than a free bonus. Exploring farther or staying longer could turn up useful items, but every extra stop also meant more exposure to AI combatants and rival Operators. Squadmates could revive one another, but a revival did not make a run risk-free: death still threatened the backpack haul.
What did exfil mean, and how did extraction work?
“Exfil” means extracting from the exclusion zone alive. In the original DMZ, players called in a helicopter at a marked extraction point. Activating a point revealed it to other squads and attracted AI combatants, so reaching the location did not guarantee a safe departure.

After the ordinary extraction points had been used, the match revealed a final exfil. It was the last route out; an Operator who missed it was listed as MIA. In practical terms, a squad needed to weigh the value of one more objective or loot stop against the time and danger involved in reaching an extraction point.
How is the announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ different?
Activision announced a separate DMZ mode for Modern Warfare 4 on June 6, 2026. It is a new iteration, not a description of the original Warzone 2.0 mode. The announcement places it in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and says it is tied to the game’s campaign. The publisher describes Story Missions, match-generated Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, and free roaming, alongside human rivals and escalating AI threats. These are announced features, not independently verified gameplay.

Activision described the forthcoming mode as “Call of Duty’s definitive extraction shooter,” with match-to-match progression and inventory systems. That is the publisher’s characterization of the new Modern Warfare 4 mode, not a neutral verdict or a description of every original DMZ mechanic. Read the Modern Warfare 4 DMZ announcement for the features Activision has announced.
The announcement gives October 23, 2026 as Modern Warfare 4’s planned global launch date and lists Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Those are planned release details, not confirmation that the new DMZ was playable on October 4, 2026.

Is DMZ the same in Call of Duty: Mobile?
No. Call of Duty: Mobile has a separately named mode, DMZ: Recon. Activision describes it as a three-player PvPvE extraction mode with contracts and extraction zones. It is distinct from the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ and from the Modern Warfare 4 mode announced for 2026. See Activision’s DMZ: Recon support page for its description.
Can you still play the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ?
The launch-era guides establish how the original mode worked, but they do not establish whether it remains accessible or supported on October 4, 2026. Do not assume that its original mechanics or the announcement of a new DMZ confirm present-day availability; check current official Call of Duty service information for the latest status.
