You can add SVG files to the WordPress Media Library safely, but only if every upload path runs the file through an SVG sanitizer and only trusted roles can submit files. The practical approach is to install a maintained sanitizer such as Safe SVG, keep sanitization enabled, restrict the permitted roles, and test every route your site uses—including replacement tools, REST imports, WP-CLI, page builders, and migration utilities.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Do not solve the problem by adding image/svg+xml to a global MIME allowlist. A MIME filter identifies a claimed file type; it does not remove active XML content, and custom code can accept a file through an upload path your sanitizer never sees.

SVG is XML rather than a passive bitmap. An SVG can contain active or externally referenced content, so an uploaded file may carry markup that affects a browser when the file is displayed. That is why an upload that looks like a logo still deserves the same security review as other user-submitted content.
The safe sequence is to validate the file type and extension, sanitize the SVG with an allowlist, store or deliver only the sanitized result, and limit who can submit files. Wordfence’s secure-coding guidance recommends validating both type and extension and lists SVG among extensions that can be harmful when uploads are uncontrolled. Its 2021 guidance is available in the secure-coding PDF.

Sanitization and permissions solve different problems:
- Sanitization removes or rejects unsafe XML, attributes, references, and other content before the file is stored or served.
- Least-privilege permissions reduce the number of accounts that can submit an active file in the first place.
- Path coverage confirms that the same protections apply when a plugin, API, command-line tool, or builder performs the upload.
All three are required. A role restriction cannot clean a malicious file, and a sanitizer cannot protect an import path that bypasses it.

Prepare the site before enabling SVG
Make the change in a controlled environment rather than directly on a production site.
- Create a current backup of the database and files, and confirm that you know how to restore it.
- Repeat the setup on a staging copy first. Use a harmless test logo, not a file supplied by an untrusted user.
- List every way media enters the site: the normal Media Library, REST or sideload endpoints, replacement plugins, page builders, migration tools, scheduled imports, and WP-CLI jobs.
- Record which WordPress roles actually need SVG capability. Most sites need fewer roles than they initially assume.
- Check that WordPress, PHP, the sanitizer, and upload-related plugins can all receive security updates on your maintenance schedule.
Keep the staging test available. It gives you a safe place to repeat the checks after a plugin, theme, WordPress, or PHP update.
Enable SVG uploads with Safe SVG
Safe SVG is a maintained option whose stated purpose is sanitizing SVG uploads to prevent SVG/XML vulnerabilities. Follow this procedure:

- Back up and stage the change. Do not begin by changing a production MIME filter. Verify the backup and staging restore process first.
- Install the plugin. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for Safe SVG, confirm that the listing is the expected project, choose Install Now, and then select Activate.
- Configure allowed roles. Open the role or capability controls provided by the plugin and select only the roles that genuinely upload SVG. If designers, editors, or an automation account do not need this capability, leave them out. Recheck the list after role-management plugins change capabilities.
- Leave sanitization enabled. Do not disable the sanitizer to make a rejected file pass. A rejection is preferable to storing content that has not been checked.
- Upload a harmless logo through the standard interface. Go to Media > Add New and upload the test file. Confirm that WordPress accepts it, that the attachment can be selected in the editor, and that the rendered image looks correct.
- Inspect the result. Download or view the stored file in a controlled browser session and verify that it is the sanitized version, not simply the original bytes renamed with an SVG extension. If the plugin exposes a sanitization notice or log, record the result.
- Repeat the test for every other route. Do not declare the site protected until replacement, REST, command-line, builder, and migration workflows have been checked or disabled.
Safe SVG hooks the common wp_handle_upload() and wp_handle_sideload() paths. That coverage is useful for the ordinary Media Library flow, but it is not a promise that every third-party path is intercepted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why a Media Library test is not enough
The most important limitation is in Safe SVG’s technical design. Themes and plugins can call the lower-level _wp_handle_upload() function with arbitrary action names. A sanitizer that hooks the normal actions cannot guarantee that it will see a custom action. The project describes this as a deliberate security decision: “Safe SVG prioritizes guaranteed sanitization over broad compatibility.”
That limitation explains a common report: an SVG works in Media > Add New but fails when a replacement plugin, page builder, REST sideload, WP-CLI import, or migration tool handles the same file. The second tool may be using a different action or validation sequence.
Test the standard Media Library path
Use a small, ordinary logo and verify the complete lifecycle: upload, attachment display, insertion into a page, front-end rendering, and replacement or deletion. Check both an administrator account and each lower-privilege role you intend to allow. A role that can see the Media Library is not automatically a role that should upload SVG.
Test replacement plugins
Perform an actual replacement of an existing image with the test SVG. Confirm that the replacement tool reports sanitization, if it provides such a message, and inspect the resulting attachment. If the tool accepts a file that the normal Media Library rejects, treat that as an uncovered path; disable SVG replacement there or ask the vendor to route the upload through a supported sanitizer.

Test REST and sideload workflows
Run the exact REST request or server-side sideload used by your application, with the same authentication and role as production. Verify the stored file and the response, then load the attachment from the front end. An API success response proves only that the request completed; it does not prove that the SVG was sanitized.
Test WP-CLI and automation
Run the same WP-CLI media-import job used by deployment or content pipelines. Test from the account and environment that normally executes it, including scheduled jobs. If that route bypasses the sanitizer, keep SVG disabled for the job until its vendor or maintainer provides a supported, sanitized path.
Test page builders and migration tools
Upload through each builder’s media control and through a migration or backup restore on staging. Builders sometimes process files before handing them to WordPress, while migration tools may write files directly. Either behavior can produce a file that never passed through Safe SVG.
Why a global MIME allowlist is unsafe
A filter that adds image/svg+xml to accepted MIME types answers only one question: whether WordPress should consider the extension and declared type eligible. It does not parse the XML or remove active content.
The risk is larger when custom code calls _wp_handle_upload() with its own action. A global MIME allowance can let that path store an unsanitized SVG because Safe SVG cannot know that the custom action is safe to intercept. The result may look successful in the dashboard while defeating the protection you intended to add.

Do not enable unfiltered uploads globally, and do not add a MIME filter unless a sanitizer demonstrably covers the resulting path. If a plugin requires a MIME filter, verify its upload implementation with the vendor and test the complete route on staging before allowing production files.
Safe SVG, SaniGlyph SVG, and SVG Support compared
These options advertise different implementation choices. Select based on the workflow you can actually test and maintain, not on the fact that all three make an SVG appear in the Media Library.
| Option | Sanitization approach | Permission controls | Important requirements or limits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safe SVG | Sanitizes uploads and is designed to cover common wp_handle_upload() and wp_handle_sideload() flows. |
Supports restricting SVG uploads by role. | Third-party code using _wp_handle_upload() with arbitrary actions may bypass its hooks; every custom path must be tested. |
WordPress.org listing and 10up repository |
| SaniGlyph SVG | Fail-closed allowlist validation; unsafe or unsupported files are rejected rather than cleaned into an accepted result. | Supports role-based permissions. | Requires PHP’s DOM extension for strict XML sanitization and intentionally accepts plain .svg, not .svgz. |
WordPress.org listing |
| SVG Support | Advertises automatic sanitization. | Advertises role-based restrictions. | Its changelog includes security and upload-path fixes; review current compatibility and changelog details before deployment. | WordPress.org listing |
Compare the candidates on five practical axes:
- Sanitization model: rewrite-and-clean behavior can preserve more files, while fail-closed validation rejects anything outside its allowlist.
- Upload coverage: determine whether the plugin covers only ordinary Media Library actions or also the REST, replacement, builder, and import paths you use.
- Permission handling: look for explicit role selection and capability behavior rather than assuming every authenticated editor should be allowed.
- Maintenance: review release cadence, security advisories, supported WordPress and PHP versions, and dependencies such as PHP’s DOM extension.
- Rendering behavior: if a tool offers inline SVG, verify how it isolates CSS and applies sanitization in that rendering mode. External-image rendering and inline rendering are different delivery paths.
How to verify that the protection is working
Use a written acceptance checklist so a future administrator does not mistake one successful upload for complete coverage.
- The sanitizer plugin is active and updated from its official WordPress.org source.
- Only the minimum required roles can upload SVG.
- A harmless SVG uploads through the standard Media Library and renders correctly.
- The stored file has passed the sanitizer, and a rejected or altered file produces an understandable result.
- Replacement plugins, REST endpoints, WP-CLI jobs, page builders, and migration tools have each been tested.
- Any path that bypasses sanitization is disabled for SVG or has been corrected by its maintainer.
- No global unfiltered-upload setting or MIME-only workaround is enabled.
- WordPress, PHP, the sanitizer, and dependent upload components are included in the update process.
- Staging tests are repeated after updates that change media handling, roles, XML libraries, or the PHP runtime.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The upload control rejects the SVG immediately. | The user’s role is not allowed, the file is outside the sanitizer’s allowlist, or the site still blocks the MIME type. | Confirm the role setting and inspect the sanitizer’s result. Do not bypass the rejection with unfiltered uploads; use a harmless, standards-compliant test file and review the plugin documentation. |
| The Media Library upload works, but replacement fails. | The replacement plugin may call a custom upload action that Safe SVG cannot intercept. | Disable SVG replacement in that tool or obtain a vendor fix that routes the file through a sanitized path. |
| A REST or WP-CLI import succeeds, but the image is broken or unsafe. | The import path may validate only the extension or may write the file directly. | Inspect the stored attachment on staging, then keep that route disabled for SVG until it demonstrably sanitizes the file. |
| The SVG looks different after upload. | Sanitization can remove unsupported or unsafe XML, attributes, references, or styling. | Compare the sanitized output with the original and simplify the logo to supported, non-active SVG features. Never disable sanitization merely to preserve a feature. |
| A SaniGlyph SVG installation reports a missing XML component. | Strict sanitization requires PHP’s DOM extension. | Enable the DOM extension in the PHP environment, or choose a maintained sanitizer whose documented requirements match the host. |
| An inline SVG behaves differently from an external image. | Inline rendering introduces a separate CSS and markup context. | Review the tool’s inline-rendering and CSS-isolation behavior, test on staging, and use external-image rendering when the workflow does not require inline features. |
Keep SVG uploads safe after launch
SVG security is an ongoing maintenance task, not a one-time checkbox. Subscribe to or routinely review the changelogs for the sanitizer and every plugin that handles media. Security fixes may address parser behavior, role checks, or an upload path that was previously uncovered.
Apply WordPress and PHP updates through staging first, then repeat the upload-path checklist. A WordPress update can change capabilities or media internals; a PHP update can change XML parsing behavior; and a builder update can introduce a new sideload route.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Keep permissions narrow as the site grows. Remove SVG capability from temporary contractors, old editorial roles, and automation accounts that no longer need it. Review service accounts separately: a script that can upload media should not automatically be able to submit SVG.
Finally, document the approved workflow for your team: which roles may upload, which interface they must use, which tools are prohibited for SVG, and who owns the update and retest schedule. That documentation prevents a well-intentioned administrator from reintroducing a MIME-only workaround when a file is rejected.

If you need occasional logo uploads
Use Safe SVG or another maintained sanitizer, allow SVG only for the smallest trusted role set, and require the normal Media Library path. Disable SVG in replacement and import tools unless you have verified their coverage.
If you run automated imports
Choose a sanitizer whose documented hooks match the importer, then test the exact job in staging. If the importer writes files directly or uses an arbitrary action, treat it as unsupported until the vendor adds sanitization. Converting artwork to a raster format for that pipeline is safer than storing unverified SVG.
If you require strict rejection
Consider a fail-closed option such as SaniGlyph SVG, provided the host supplies PHP’s DOM extension and your designers can work within the accepted plain-.svg format. Rejection is expected when a file falls outside the allowlist.
If you require inline SVG features
Evaluate the rendering and CSS-isolation behavior separately from upload sanitization. Confirm that the inline path applies the same safety policy and that every component displaying the file is covered by your tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
