To enable the minimap on a Project Zomboid dedicated server, stop the server, open its sandbox variables file, change AllowMiniMap = false to AllowMiniMap = true, save the file, and restart the server. After reconnecting, press M (the default map key) and check that the minimap window appears.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The exact filename depends on the world or server name, so search the server files for AllowMiniMap instead of relying on a fixed line number.

What controls the minimap
Project Zomboid stores many world and gameplay rules in the sandbox variables file. The minimap switch is the Boolean setting named AllowMiniMap. A value of false disables it for players on that server; a value of true permits the minimap.
This is a server-side setting. Changing a local game option does not override a server that has the value set to false. The server must also be restarted after the file is saved so that it reloads the sandbox variables.

What you need before editing
- Access to the server’s file manager, FTP/SFTP location, or hosting-panel Files tab.
- Permission to stop and start the Project Zomboid server.
- The name of the world or server whose settings you intend to change.
- A recent copy of the sandbox file before editing. This gives you a way back if another setting is changed accidentally.
Warn connected players before stopping the server. A clean stop is preferable to editing a file while the server process is still running, because a running process can keep old settings in memory or overwrite a file when it shuts down.
Enable the minimap step by step
1. Stop the Project Zomboid server
Use the Stop control in your hosting panel or stop the dedicated-server process using the method provided by your host. Wait until the panel reports that the process is fully stopped before opening the configuration file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Open the sandbox variables file
The file is normally under the server’s Zomboid/Server directory. Its name is tied to the world or server name, so there is no single filename that applies to every installation.
Common names include:
dedicated_SandboxVars.lua, which is used by some default dedicated-server setups.<WorldName>_SandboxVars.lua, where<WorldName>is replaced by the configured world name.world_SandboxVars.luain setups that use “world” as the world name.
On a managed panel, open the Files tab and browse to the server’s configuration area. Panels based on Pterodactyl or Starbase commonly expose the same files through that interface, although the displayed directory tree can differ. If several sandbox files are present, use the one matching the active world or server name rather than editing every file.
3. Search for AllowMiniMap
Open the file in the panel editor or a plain-text editor and use Ctrl+F to search for AllowMiniMap. Do not jump to a line number from an online guide. Different builds and generated files place the setting at different locations; published examples have cited lines 501, 446, and 778.

The existing entry normally looks like this:
AllowMiniMap = false,
4. Change the value to true
Replace only the Boolean value and preserve the setting name and comma:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →AllowMiniMap = true,
Save the file after confirming that the edit is in the active sandbox file. Do not put quotation marks around true; it is a Boolean value, not text.
5. Add the entry if it is missing
Some generated files do not contain the line, or the line may be commented out. In that case, add the setting inside the file’s SandboxVars table, alongside the other sandbox variables, and end the entry with a comma when another entry follows it.
SandboxVars = {
-- other settings appear here
AllowMiniMap = true,
-- additional settings may follow
}
Keep the existing table structure and indentation. If the final entry in the table is followed immediately by the closing brace, the comma is generally accepted in the generated Lua-style configuration; matching the punctuation used by neighboring entries is the safest approach. Do not place AllowMiniMap outside the SandboxVars table.
6. Save, then restart the server
Use the editor’s Save action, close the file, and start the server again from the hosting panel or service manager. A restart is required; reconnecting to a process that never reloaded the file will not apply the new value.

7. Verify from a player session
Join the server after it has finished starting. Press M, which is the default map key, and check whether the minimap window appears. If you have changed the game’s key bindings, use the key currently assigned to the map command instead.
Choosing the correct file
File naming causes more failed attempts than the Boolean edit itself. Use the following as a guide, then confirm the active world name in your server configuration or panel.
| What you see | Where to look | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
dedicated_SandboxVars.lua |
Often in the dedicated server’s Zomboid/Server directory |
Search this file first when the server uses the default dedicated-world naming. |
<WorldName>_SandboxVars.lua |
Zomboid/Server, with the configured world name replacing <WorldName> |
Edit the file whose prefix matches the world players actually join. |
world_SandboxVars.lua |
Usually the same server directory | Use it when the configured world is named world. |
| Several sandbox files | A file manager or hosting-panel Files tab | Search each candidate for the active world name and the relevant AllowMiniMap entry; do not make unrelated copies identical without knowing which one is loaded. |
The table describes naming patterns, not a guarantee that every installation will contain all three names. The world name and host panel determine the actual path.
If the setting is commented out or absent
A commented line does not control the server. Remove the comment marker from the intended entry or add a new entry inside SandboxVars. For example, change:
-- AllowMiniMap = false,
to:
AllowMiniMap = true,
When adding the line manually, keep it between the opening and closing braces of the SandboxVars table. Check that the preceding entry has its comma and that the new line does not introduce an unmatched brace or an extra quote. A malformed table can prevent the intended settings from loading, so make the smallest possible edit and retain your backup.

Why line numbers and menu instructions differ
Sandbox files are generated with different content and ordering, so line numbers are not stable. One guide may show AllowMiniMap near line 501, another near 446, and another near 778. Text search is therefore more reliable than scrolling to a number.
Older guidance from a 2022 Steam discussion describes an “Allow Mini-Map” control in a web panel’s in-game map settings. That path reflects an older build or panel interface. For current server administration, the sandbox variables file is the dependable place to verify the actual value. If a panel still presents a similarly named toggle, check that it changes the same sandbox entry and restart the server afterward.

The file was edited, but the server was not restarted
Stop and start the server after saving. The setting is read during startup, so a player reconnecting to an already-running process may continue using the previous value.

Recheck the configured world name and the filename prefix. If the server has both a default file and a world-specific file, edit the file associated with the world that the server launches. Searching every candidate for AllowMiniMap can reveal which files contain the setting, but the active world name is what determines which one matters.
The value is still false or is commented out
Open the file again and confirm the active line reads exactly AllowMiniMap = true,. A second, commented, or duplicate-looking line can be misleading if the line you changed is not inside SandboxVars. Keep one clear active entry in the correct table.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The line was inserted outside the table
Move the entry between SandboxVars = { and its closing }. Preserve the surrounding syntax and commas. If you are unsure which brace closes the table, restore the backup and make the edit next to a nearby sandbox variable rather than adding it at the end of the file.
The map key was changed on the client
M is the default map key, but a player can remap controls. Check the local key bindings and test the assigned map key before assuming the server setting failed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A panel toggle appears to disagree with the file
Use the file’s AllowMiniMap value as the authoritative check, then restart. A panel can display labels from an older interface or write settings only when an Apply or Save action is used. Do not rely on a visual toggle that has not been saved to the server configuration.
Minimap access and player visibility are separate settings
AllowMiniMap controls whether the minimap is allowed. It does not by itself define how other players appear on the map. Player visibility is configured separately in pzserver.ini; a setting such as MapRemotePlayerVisibility governs that behavior.
If the minimap opens but remote players are not displayed as expected, inspect the relevant pzserver.ini value rather than changing AllowMiniMap again. Changes to that file also require a server restart.
Safe change checklist
- Announce the maintenance stop to players.
- Stop the server completely.
- Back up the active sandbox variables file.
- Open the file under
Zomboid/Serveror through the panel’s Files tab. - Search for
AllowMiniMapinstead of using a fixed line number. - Set the active entry to
AllowMiniMap = true,. - If absent, add it inside the
SandboxVarstable with correct punctuation. - Save the file and restart the server.
- Join the server and press M or the client’s assigned map key.
- If the window is present but player markers are wrong, review
MapRemotePlayerVisibilityinpzserver.iniand restart after any change.
