Which DayZ files control spawns?
Do not edit the loot tables when you want to move where players appear. DayZ separates player placement from item distribution and spawn limits.

The file name is case-sensitive on some hosting platforms, so look for cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml rather than creating a second file with a different capitalization. Provider file managers may place it in a configuration, mission, profile, or server-data area; use the location already containing the stock DayZ configuration instead of guessing a new directory.
Understand the three sections before changing anything
Vanilla-style files use three parallel sections: fresh, hop, and travel. Each section has its own parameter blocks and its own position list. The Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki describes fresh as required. It describes hop as the path for a player moving between servers on the same map and travel as the path for a player arriving from another map. That distinction is most relevant to official servers and official-style configurations; private-server behavior can depend on the server build and its surrounding configuration.

Inside each section you will normally see spawn_params, generator_params, and generator_posbubbles. The position entries belong in generator_posbubbles. Keep the other blocks intact unless you have a documented reason to alter their values. A position list copied from one section should not be pasted over another section wholesale; retain the section’s existing structure and attributes.
Before editing: make a reversible plan
- Stop the server. A running DayZ process can overwrite your upload or continue reading the old file. Hosting guides consistently instruct administrators to stop the server before modifying the XML.
- Download a backup. Keep the untouched original and a dated copy of every working revision. If the server fails to start, restore the last known-good file rather than trying several changes at once.
- Decide which spawn flow you are changing. For ordinary new-character spawns, work in
fresh. Do not deletehoportravelmerely because you do not plan to use them. - Collect coordinates first. Prepare a written list of the locations you want, including the map and the X, Y, and Z values in the format used by your existing file. A map editor or your server’s position output can help, but verify every coordinate in-game.
- Plan a safe test. Choose points that are reachable, not inside solid geometry, and not all clustered in one dangerous area. Test with more than one fresh character.
How to edit cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml manually
1. Stop and open the server files
- Use your host’s control panel to stop the DayZ server completely. Wait until the panel reports that it is offline.
- Open the provider’s file manager or connect with the file-transfer method it supplies.
- Locate
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xmlin the same configuration area as the stock server files. - Download a copy before opening it for editing. Name the backup with the date and a description such as “stock spawn points”; do not overwrite that copy during later tests.
On a self-hosted server, the exact directory depends on how the instance was installed. Search the server’s configuration and mission folders for the file name rather than relying on a path from an unrelated hosting guide.

Open the file in an XML-aware editor that preserves plain text and UTF-8 encoding. First identify the complete fresh section and its generator_posbubbles list. Compare the opening and closing tags, indentation, and attribute names of two or three existing position entries. Those entries are your schema reference.
Do not replace the entire document with a simplified example from a forum post. The file contains parameters in addition to coordinates, and an entry that looks plausible but uses the wrong attribute names can be ignored or make the configuration invalid.

3. Choose and verify coordinates
Coordinates can be obtained from a DayZ map tool or from position information written by the server, but the exact output format differs by tool and server setup. Confirm that the numbers correspond to the same map—Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal—and that you are reading the horizontal and vertical axes in the same order as the existing XML.
A coordinate is not a guarantee that a character will materialize on the exact visible point. The game’s spawn-generation rules still determine whether a location is valid. Avoid water, steep slopes, buildings, rocks, restricted areas, and places where a character could be trapped. Spread points across several viable areas so a failed candidate does not leave every player with the same result.

4. Remove only the default points you do not want
In the fresh section’s generator_posbubbles list, remove the complete position elements for defaults you no longer want. Delete a whole entry, including its opening and closing tags, rather than erasing a single number and leaving malformed XML behind.
Keep at least one valid position entry. Removing every fresh position can leave the server with no usable location set, while leaving one unwanted default among your custom entries can make testing appear inconsistent.

5. Add your custom points by copying the file’s own format
The safest method is to duplicate an existing position element inside the same generator_posbubbles block, then change only the coordinate values and any dimensions that you have deliberately chosen to change. Preserve the original element name, attribute spelling, quotation style, and nesting. Place each new element alongside the existing entries, not inside another entry.
Do not copy a position element from a different DayZ XML schema without checking it. One DZconfig page describes spawn points as individual spawn elements targeting PlayerSpawnHandler, which does not match the fresh/hop/travel layout shown by the Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki and the vanilla offline-mode file. For an official-style configuration, follow the structure already present in your own vanilla file.

If your goal is simply to alter where a new character starts, finish the fresh list and leave hop and travel unchanged. Edit those sections only when you have confirmed that your server uses the corresponding transfer behavior and you want those players to receive a different pool of locations.
Changing all three lists at once makes diagnosis harder. Start with one section, test it, and record the result before making a second change.

7. Validate the document before uploading
- Every opening XML tag has a matching closing tag.
- Quotation marks around attribute values are paired.
- There are no stray angle brackets, smart quotes, or pasted formatting characters.
- The file remains named
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. - The editor saved plain XML rather than rich text or a web page.
- The
fresh,hop, andtravelcontainers remain in the expected nesting order.
If your editor has an XML validation command, run it. Validation can catch broken nesting, but it cannot tell you whether a coordinate is safe or whether the current game build still interprets every parameter as the older documentation describes.
8. Upload, restart, and test
- Upload the edited file while the server is still stopped.
- Use the control panel’s save or apply action if one is required.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join with a fresh character or use the server’s normal method for forcing a new spawn.
- Record the actual location and repeat the test several times. Compare the results with the points you entered.
Testing is essential because no source in the current documentation set confirms that the documented structure behaves identically in every 2026 game build. If the server starts but players continue appearing at old locations, first verify that you edited the file actually used by that instance and that the server was fully stopped while you uploaded it.
Using a visual spawn-point editor
Manual editing gives you direct control but requires careful coordinate work. A visual alternative is the DayZ Spawnpoint Editor at dzpage.com. It allows you to drag points onto a satellite map for Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal, export a cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml file, and import an existing file for adjustment.

Before using an exported file, download your current working XML. Inspect the export rather than uploading it blindly: confirm that it contains the sections your server expects, that the map is correct, and that any custom settings you previously made were not discarded. If the export uses a different structure from your vanilla file, do not merge the two by intuition; retain the known-good file and transfer only the position entries you can verify.

What the parameter blocks mean—and what not to change casually
generator_posbubbles: the locations
This is the part intended for adding and removing spawn positions. Treat each position as a complete unit. Keep the list inside its parent section, and maintain the same element format used by the stock file.
spawn_params: selection constraints
This block contains rules associated with choosing a valid location. Community documentation commonly discusses distances from infected, other players, and static objects, but the available material does not establish a single current 2026 value set or guarantee that every server build interprets each field identically. Unless you are deliberately tuning those rules and have version-specific documentation, leave the existing values unchanged.

This block controls how candidate areas are generated. Older community explanations refer to grid density and steepness bounds, but those explanations should be treated as version-sensitive. Changing these values can alter the number and quality of candidate locations independently of the coordinates you add, so test one category of change at a time.

Version and schema cautions
The Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki page describing the three sections is not a 2026-dated reference; the search material characterized it as roughly 981 days old at retrieval. An Arkensor offline-mode vanilla file shows the same fresh/hop/travel arrangement, and current hosting guides still direct administrators to edit cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. Together these are useful evidence for the workflow, but they do not prove that every current game version has identical defaults or parameter behavior.
A separate DZconfig description uses a different spawn-element model, and an old 2019 Steam discussion reportedly claimed the XML was no longer used. That claim was not tied to a verifiable cited page and should not override the file present in your server’s current vanilla configuration. Use the structure shipped with your server as the authority: if it has fresh, hop, travel, and generator position bubbles, edit those lists; if a provider has supplied a deliberately different supported schema, follow that provider’s current documentation and keep a backup.
A repeatable maintenance workflow
- Export or download the active XML before every change.
- Write down the map, coordinate source, and purpose of each new point.
- Change one section or one parameter category at a time.
- Validate the XML and keep the server stopped during the upload.
- Start the server and test multiple fresh characters.
- Record actual results, remove points that produce unsafe locations, and keep the last successful file as your rollback copy.
This process separates coordinate problems from XML syntax problems and from version-specific behavior. It also lets you restore a known-good spawn system quickly after a server update.
