To enable Twitter Cards—now commonly called X Cards—on a WordPress site, make one maintained SEO or social-metadata component generate the page’s twitter:* tags. The most straightforward current workflow is Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing → X card data. Then set your site identity, choose a default or featured image, save the settings, and verify the rendered metadata and preview. You do not need custom application code when a maintained plugin already provides the tags.

What Twitter Cards do on WordPress

Twitter’s official announcement described the feature simply: “Twitter Cards add link previews to Tweets.” A card gives a post additional context before someone clicks, such as a page title, description and image. X is the platform’s current name, but WordPress plugins and documentation still commonly use the original twitter:* terminology.

A Card is metadata-driven. It is not a separate WordPress post format and it is not created by uploading an image to X. When a crawler fetches a public URL, it reads the social metadata output in that page’s HTML and builds the preview from it. Your WordPress installation therefore needs four things:

  • A page title and description suitable for social sharing.
  • A canonical URL that resolves to the page you want people to visit.
  • A representative featured image or configured default image.
  • One active component that outputs the social metadata.

An X site or author handle can add attribution, but it is optional for a basic preview.

The recommended Yoast SEO setup

Yoast’s current instructions say X card data is enabled by default, but you can confirm it explicitly. The labels below are the current path documented by Yoast.

  1. Open the feature settings. In the WordPress Dashboard, go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features.
  2. Enable the card output. Find Social sharing and turn on X card data. If it is already enabled, leave it on and continue.
  3. Set the site representation. In Site representation, identify the X profile when the site represents an organization. If the site represents a person, select the relevant WordPress user instead.
  4. Complete the user profile when prompted. Yoast may ask the selected user to update their profile. Save that profile information so author attribution can be generated consistently.
  5. Save the settings. Confirm the settings page reports the changes as saved before testing a URL.
  6. Adjust an individual post when necessary. Open the post editor and use its social appearance controls to enter a card-specific title, description and image. These values are useful when the normal SEO fields or the featured image do not make the best social preview.

Yoast can automatically use the SEO title, meta description and featured image for the X card. That gives most posts a working default without extra fields, while still allowing an editor to override the values for a particular article. Yoast documents this workflow in its WordPress Twitter Cards setup guide.

When to use per-post social settings

Use the post-level fields when a headline is accurate for search but too long or unclear in a feed, when the SEO description does not explain the link’s value, or when the featured image is a poor crop for social sharing. A post-level value should describe that URL specifically; do not replace a relevant image with a generic site graphic merely to make every card look identical.

Other ways to generate the metadata

Yoast is not the only route. The important architectural decision is to choose exactly one active metadata generator. Running an SEO plugin, a social plugin and theme code that all print the same tags can create conflicting titles, images or URLs.

Route Setup location or method Controls documented for individual content Image and post-type behavior Compatibility or maintenance note
Yoast SEO Dashboard → Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing → X card data Post-editor social appearance controls for title, description and image; site or selected-user representation SEO title, meta description and featured image can populate the card Use it as the single owner of the social tags
The SEO Framework Its settings expose a switch for Twitter Card metadata Optional twitter:site handle Not stated in the documented details Its documentation recommends that only one plugin output Twitter Card and Open Graph tags
Simple Open Graphs Settings → Open Graph; select a default image, enabled post types and the X handle Per-author handle overrides Default image and enabled post types are selectable Compatibility logic yields to major SEO plugins
Social Preview and Open Graph Tags Install and configure the WordPress plugin; its documented feature set adds the metadata Metadata for title, description, URL, image, author, dates and related fields Not stated in the documented details Check its interaction with any existing SEO or theme output before activating it
Official Twitter WordPress plugin Historical project implementation Accepted site and author usernames and allowed per-post title and description customization Not stated in the documented details Treat it as historical; check compatibility and maintenance before using it on a new site

Choosing between a full SEO plugin and a focused social plugin

If your site already uses Yoast or another maintained SEO suite, enable its card feature rather than adding a second plugin. A focused social plugin is reasonable when you do not want a full SEO suite, provided it supports the post types you publish and does not duplicate tags produced by your theme or another plugin.

Before activating an alternative, check five practical points: where its settings live, whether it has per-post overrides, how it chooses a default image, whether it yields to an existing SEO plugin, and whether the project is actively maintained for your WordPress version. The last point is especially important for the historical official plugin.

A complete implementation checklist

Use this sequence regardless of which maintained generator you select.

  1. Choose one owner. Decide whether the SEO plugin, a standalone social plugin or carefully maintained theme code will print the Card and Open Graph tags. Disable overlapping features elsewhere.
  2. Prepare the page data. Give the page a clear title and description, confirm its canonical URL, and assign a representative featured image. Configure a site-wide default image if your chosen component supports one and individual pages may lack featured images.
  3. Add attribution only if useful. Enter the site X handle for an organization or the relevant author handle when your plugin supports it. A handle is optional for a basic title, description and image preview.
  4. Save all settings. Save the plugin settings, the site representation or profile, and any post-level social fields. A draft change that was never saved cannot appear in the fetched HTML.
  5. Inspect the rendered page source. Open the public URL in a browser, choose the command to view the page source, and search for twitter:. Confirm that the generated social metadata contains the intended page information rather than an old title, description or image URL.
  6. Fetch the URL in a current social-preview or Card-inspection tool. Check the title, description and image returned for the exact canonical URL. Test the public URL, not a private preview link or an editor URL.
  7. Test representative content types. Check a post with a featured image, a post without one, and any custom post type you publish. This reveals whether your default-image and enabled-post-type settings cover the actual site.

Why an X preview has no image or shows the wrong data

Most failures are caused by the fetched HTML or the image URL, not by the social network’s visual layout. Work through these branches in order.

No preview image

  • Confirm that the post has a featured image, or that a default image is configured for pages without one.
  • Check the rendered source for an image-related social tag and make sure its URL is public and resolves without a login.
  • Verify that the image URL is not blocked by access controls, a maintenance mode, a firewall rule or a robots policy that prevents the crawler from fetching it.
  • If the image was recently changed, request the URL again in the current inspection tool. A crawler can retain an older result for a period of time.

The title or description is stale

  • Look first at the post’s social appearance fields. A post-level title or description intentionally overrides the generic SEO values.
  • If no override exists, check the SEO title, meta description and page content that your generator uses as defaults.
  • Save the post and settings again, clear any page or CDN cache you control, then inspect the source rather than relying on the editor’s preview.
  • Submit the exact final URL to the inspection tool. Redirects can cause you to test one URL while the crawler reads another.

Duplicate or conflicting tags

Search the page source for repeated twitter: entries and for multiple Open Graph entries describing the same field. If more than one component is printing them, make one component the owner and disable the corresponding feature in the others. The SEO Framework specifically recommends that only one plugin output Twitter Card and Open Graph tags; the same rule prevents conflicts with theme code.

The handle or author attribution is missing

Attribution is optional, so its absence does not prevent a basic card. If you want it, configure the organization’s site profile or select the appropriate person in the site-representation settings, then complete the requested user profile. For plugins that support author-level overrides, check the author’s social settings as well as the global site setting.

A custom post type is not producing cards

Review the plugin’s enabled post-type controls. Simple Open Graphs, for example, asks you to select the post types it should cover. A configuration that includes standard posts but excludes a portfolio, video entry or other custom type will leave those URLs without the expected metadata.

A newly installed plugin appears not to work

First confirm that the plugin is active and that its settings were saved. Then inspect the source for its output. If no tags appear, a theme template, caching layer or another plugin may be removing or replacing them. If tags appear twice, revert to one generator. For a historical or lightly maintained implementation, verify compatibility before relying on it for a production site.

How to keep cards accurate as the site changes

Set sensible defaults, then override deliberately

A site-wide default image and consistent SEO defaults provide a fallback for pages that have no custom social fields. Editors should override those defaults when the article’s subject, headline or image would otherwise be misleading. Keep the canonical URL aligned with the page that the card promises to open.

Review social fields during publishing

Add the social check to the publishing checklist: read the card title as a feed user would, confirm that the description explains the click, and check that the selected image represents the page. This is particularly important after changing a featured image, migrating a URL or editing the site’s identity.

Recheck after plugin or theme changes

Theme updates, SEO migrations and new social plugins can change which component owns the metadata. After such a change, inspect one representative page’s source and run it through a current preview tool. Confirm that there is one coherent set of tags and that the image URL remains public.

What a successful setup looks like

On a correctly configured page, the source contains one coherent set of twitter:* metadata generated by your chosen component. The title, description, canonical URL and image correspond to that page; a configured site or author handle appears when attribution is enabled; and the current inspection tool returns the same information. If those checks pass, the WordPress side of the Card setup is complete. Future preview changes are usually resolved by correcting the page metadata, removing duplicate output, making the image publicly fetchable or allowing time for a crawler cache to refresh.
