What the vote-kick setting does
vote_kick_enabled controls whether players can start a vote to remove another player. The dedicated-server guide describes the feature as a way for users to vote against players disrupting a game when no administrator is present: “When no admin is present, vote kick allows users to vote to kick players that are disrupting the game.” See the Don’t Starve Together dedicated-server guide for the documented setting.

What you need before changing the setting
- Access to the persistent configuration for the cluster that runs your world.
- Permission to stop and start the affected server or shard, or access to your host’s restart control.
- The correct cluster and shard identified before you edit anything. A multi-shard installation can have separate configuration files, so changing an unrelated cluster will have no effect.
- A backup or copy of the configuration file before editing, especially if you manage several worlds.
Configuration locations vary with the operating system, the cluster name, the number of shards, and the hosting provider. Dedicated-server documentation covers alternate persistent storage and shard-specific configuration; it does not provide one universal path that applies to every installation. The Don’t Starve Together dedicated-server documentation explains the storage and shard concepts.

Enable vote kicking on a self-hosted dedicated server
Use this procedure when you control the server files directly.
- Stop the server, or schedule a restart. Editing a file while the process is running can leave the game using the old value or overwrite your change when it shuts down. Stop the affected server cleanly through your service manager, script, or server-control tool.
- Open the persistent configuration for the active cluster. Start from the persistent-storage or configuration directory used by that cluster. If the installation has Master and Caves shards, determine which shard owns the setting you need and inspect the shard-specific configuration described in the dedicated-server documentation.
- Find the key. Search the relevant configuration for
vote_kick_enabled. The documented form accepts a Boolean value:vote_kick_enabled = [true | false]. - Set the value to true. Use this exact line, preserving the key name and Boolean spelling:
vote_kick_enabled = true - Save the file. Make sure the edit is saved in the persistent directory for the cluster you actually launch. Do not place the line in an unrelated world, temporary directory, or a different cluster’s configuration.
- Restart the server or affected shard. The game must reread the configuration. If your setup launches shards separately, restart the shard whose configuration you changed, or restart the complete cluster when that is how your service is managed.
After the restart, players should be able to use the game’s vote-kick feature when the server permits it. The setting itself does not define how many votes are required or how long a vote remains active; those behaviors are not specified in the cited dedicated-server documentation.

Enable it through a managed hosting panel
Many managed hosts hide the file system and expose common server options in a web panel. A hosting guide describes vote_kick_enabled as the option that determines whether players can start a vote to kick others: the provider’s vote-kick instructions.

- Open the control panel for the correct Don’t Starve Together server and cluster.
- Open the configuration, gameplay, or moderation settings supplied by that panel.
- Turn on the switch labelled “Enable Vote to Kick,” if that label is provided.
- Apply or save the change.
- Use the panel’s restart control. A restart is necessary when the panel writes the underlying value but does not hot-reload the running shard.
If the panel has no switch, ask the host whether it supports direct editing of vote_kick_enabled or whether support must apply the setting. Do not assume that editing a local copy changes the hosted server; managed services generally keep the live configuration on their own storage.
How cluster and shard layout affects the edit
Single-cluster, single-shard servers
For a simple installation, there is one persistent configuration associated with the world you launch. Confirm that the server process is using that cluster before changing the key. If several worlds exist on the same machine, each may have its own configuration.
Multi-shard clusters
A cluster can run more than one shard, commonly a surface world and an underground world. Dedicated-server documentation distinguishes cluster-level storage from shard-specific configuration. The setting must be changed where the running server reads it; changing a file belonging to another cluster or an inactive shard will not enable the feature for your players.

Alternate persistent storage
Server launch options can point the game at an alternate persistent-storage location. When that is configured, the expected files may not be under the default user directory. Check the launch script or service definition to identify the storage location before searching for the key. The dedicated-server reference explains that alternate storage and shard layouts affect where configuration is kept: Dedicated Server documentation.
Verify that the change was loaded
Verification is more reliable after a full restart than immediately after saving the file.
- Check the server or shard log for a normal startup after the restart. A syntax error or malformed edit can prevent the process from loading the configuration.
- Confirm that you edited the cluster named by the service or launch script, not merely a similarly named directory.
- Have a non-administrator test account check whether the vote-kick option is available in the running game.
- If the setting appears to revert, stop the service before editing again and check whether a control panel, startup script, or configuration generator rewrites the file.
- For a multi-shard setup, repeat the configuration check for each shard that your host documents as using its own settings.
There is no documented universal vote threshold, quorum, cooldown, immunity rule, or platform-specific variation in the available server references. A successful configuration load therefore confirms that the option is enabled, but it does not establish a particular number of required votes.

Troubleshoot a vote kick that does not work
The option is missing after editing
Recheck the key name character by character. It is vote_kick_enabled, with underscores between the words. Use the documented Boolean form true, not a quoted string or a different spelling. Then restart the process that owns the setting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The server restarted but players still cannot start a vote
- Verify that the restart affected the correct cluster and shard.
- Check whether the host panel maintains a separate setting that overwrites manual edits.
- Confirm that the edited file is in the active persistent-storage location rather than a backup or template directory.
- Review startup logs for configuration errors that caused the new value to be ignored.
Only one part of a cluster behaves differently
This usually indicates that the shards are reading different configuration files or that only one shard was restarted. Compare the active paths and restart procedure documented for your cluster layout instead of copying a path from another operating system or host.
The setting keeps changing back to false
Some hosting panels regenerate configuration files when a server is restarted. Set the option in the panel itself, or disable the conflicting automation if you administer the host. If you cannot identify the writer, retain a copy of the desired line and ask the provider where persistent custom settings belong.

Administrator controls when a vote is not enough
Vote kicking is intended for periods when no administrator is present. It should not be treated as a replacement for direct moderation. The DST console command reference documents the following privileged commands: Don’t Starve Together console commands.
TheNet:Kick(userid)directly kicks the specified user.TheNet:Ban(userid)bans the specified user.c_stopvote()stops an active vote.
The commands require the appropriate administrator or console access. A dedicated server can be launched with the -console option to provide a command-line console for privileged Lua administration, as described in the dedicated-server reference. Replace userid with the identifier expected by the running console; do not run a kick or ban command against an unverified identifier.

Safe moderation practice after enabling votes
- Tell regular players what the vote is for and reserve it for disruptive behavior, since a vote removes a player from the game rather than resolving the underlying dispute.
- Keep at least one trusted administrator available for serious harassment, repeated griefing, or situations in which a vote is being abused.
- Use a direct kick or ban when you have administrator access and need an immediate, accountable action.
- Use
c_stopvote()when an active vote is clearly being misused and you have console privileges. - Document which cluster and shard you changed so future administrators can reproduce the configuration without guessing.
Limits of what the setting tells you
Setting vote_kick_enabled to true establishes that the server permits the vote-kick feature. The available documentation does not establish a single vote percentage, minimum player count, cooldown, immunity for hosts or administrators, or identical behavior on every platform and game version. Those rules can change with the current game build or with a host’s implementation, so check the version-specific game or provider documentation if you need an exact threshold or timing rule.
The reliable configuration workflow is therefore: edit the active persistent setting, save it, restart the process that reads it, and use administrator console commands when a player vote is unavailable or inappropriate.
