In modern retail World of Warcraft, assign your fishing pole to the Fishing profession-equipment slot in the Fishing Journal, then cast Fishing. You do not toggle it into a weapon slot. The weapon-swap approach is a legacy workflow; Classic can work differently.
Equip a fishing pole in modern retail WoW
- Open the Fishing Journal. Find the Fishing profession interface; community reports place its equipment control near the upper-right of the interface, though exact labels and layout can vary by client build.
- Assign the pole to the Fishing tool slot. Put your fishing pole in the profession-equipment slot for Fishing. This is separate from the weapon slots on your character.
- Cast Fishing. The pole is used for the profession action, and community guidance says casting activates its effects.
Blizzard’s Dragonflight profession-system announcement says fishing rods are already equipped as profession equipment, so players no longer need to switch weapons to fish. It also explains that profession equipment may visually appear on a character during a profession action and switch back upon entering combat. That visual change is automatic; it is not a weapon-slot toggle. Blizzard Entertainment’s Dragonflight profession announcement describes the system introduced with Dragonflight, rather than a new 2026 patch change.

Why the old weapon toggle may not work
Older guides and macros may assume a fishing pole occupies a character weapon slot. In the modern profession system, the pole belongs in Fishing profession equipment instead. As a result, checking for a pole with a weapon-oriented conditional such as [equipped:Fishing Poles], or relying on a weapon equipment set, may not detect or manage it as expected.
A 2022 Blizzard forum discussion reports that /equip <pole name> can assign a pole to the Fishing Journal slot in the setup discussed, but it does not establish a macro that works universally across current client builds. If you automate the assignment, test it in your version of the game; the Journal slot is the reliable place to verify the pole’s assignment. Blizzard forum discussion of fishing-pole macros.

What to do in WoW Classic
Do not apply the retail instructions automatically to Classic. The available Classic-specific example, Fisherman’s Reminder, is a one-click pole, bobber, and combat-weapon swap aid listed for WoW Classic game version 1.15.9, with an update shown on July 26, 2026. That listing supports a Classic use case, not a retail Fishing Journal toggle. Check the addon’s current game flavor and version compatibility before installing it.
