There is no universally best payment provider for a game studio. The right choice depends on where your players live, whether you sell games, subscriptions or virtual goods, who will be merchant of record, your fraud exposure, and how much payment, tax and support work your team can operate. Build a shortlist by comparing providers against the same countries, payment mix, transaction volume and responsibilities, then validate the finalists with a controlled pilot.
This guide provides a practical framework for doing that comparison, including total-cost modeling, coverage checks, game-specific fraud controls, integration requirements, contract questions and provider-specific evidence from Stripe, Adyen and Xsolla.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
1. Define the transaction and legal model before comparing vendors
Payment providers can offer very different operating models. A payment service provider (PSP) supplies payment infrastructure while your company generally remains the seller. A merchant-of-record (MoR) arrangement can transfer some combination of tax, refund, dispute, customer-support and compliance duties to the provider. Do not compare a PSP quote with an MoR quote as if they were the same product.
Map every way the game makes money
List each transaction type that must be supported:
- Premium game purchases and downloadable content.
- One-time in-game purchases such as currency, cosmetics or upgrades.
- Recurring subscriptions, memberships and battle passes.
- Creator, marketplace or partner payouts, if applicable.
- Web-store purchases that deliver items to a console, PC or mobile account.
For each stream, record the average order value, expected monthly transaction count, refund rate, countries, currencies, payment methods and whether goods are transferable between players. A provider may approve a studio for ordinary digital sales but require additional underwriting for trading, cash-out, prizes, randomized items or other mechanics that change financial or regulatory risk.

Write down who is responsible for each obligation
| Responsibility | Questions to settle in the contract |
|---|---|
| Seller or merchant of record | Which legal entity sells to players in each country, and whose name appears on receipts and statements? |
| Indirect tax | Who calculates, collects, remits and records sales tax, VAT or GST, and for which markets? |
| Refunds and customer support | Who sets the refund policy, answers payment tickets and handles player identity verification? |
| Chargebacks and disputes | Who receives the dispute, gathers evidence, submits the response and absorbs the loss or fee? |
| Fraud monitoring | Which party configures rules, reviews alerts and carries liability for unauthorized transactions? |
| Settlement and reporting | Which entity receives funds, in what currency and on what schedule, and what reports support accounting? |
Xsolla’s published PSP model illustrates why this distinction matters: the developer is shown as merchant of record while Xsolla processes payments. Xsolla lists infrastructure and compliance functions it provides, but also identifies duties the developer retains as MoR, including fraud monitoring, customer support, refunds and chargebacks, and tax management. Verify the exact allocation for your markets rather than assuming that a product label transfers every obligation.
Disclose game mechanics during underwriting
Give each provider a plain-language description of the game, platforms, audience, item flows and refund policy. State whether players can trade items, transfer value, withdraw money, enter contests or receive randomized rewards. Ask for written confirmation that the business model is permitted in each target market. This avoids building an integration that later faces reserves, holds or termination because the original application omitted a material mechanic.
2. Match coverage to player locations, not headline counts
Coverage is useful only when it describes the countries and methods your merchant entity can actually use. Ask for a country-by-country matrix showing live methods, local acquiring, supported currencies, settlement currencies and any volume or licensing restrictions.
| Provider evidence | Published coverage claim | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Adyen gaming offering | 200+ payment methods and 150+ currencies | Provider-described totals; confirm availability for your legal entity and player countries. |
| Xsolla product page | 700+ payment methods, 130+ currencies and 200+ geographies | Provider-described totals using its own counting conventions; verify the exact methods and settlement options you need. |
| Stripe gaming offering | Supports cards, local payment methods, in-app payment and direct web-store checkout | Coverage depends on country, business type, platform and account approval; request a market-specific list. |
The Adyen and Xsolla counts are not a like-for-like ranking: one provider may count wallets, bank schemes, local variants or geographic entities differently from another. A smaller list that includes the preferred wallet in your highest-value market can be more useful than a larger global number.
Build a player-market matrix
For each priority country, record:
- Player currency and the currency in which you want to display prices.
- Preferred cards, wallets, bank transfers, cash vouchers or carrier billing.
- Local acquiring availability and expected settlement currency.
- Authentication requirements, such as 3-D Secure or equivalent step-up checks.
- Tax, age-verification or consumer-protection requirements that affect checkout.
Send this matrix to every finalist and ask the provider to mark each method as live, contractually available after approval, planned or unavailable. Only the first two categories should be used in a launch plan, and the second should have a documented activation date and dependency.
3. Compare total cost using identical assumptions
A displayed percentage is not a complete price. Model the same monthly volume, average basket, card and local-method mix, countries, refund rate, dispute rate and settlement currencies for every quote. Include recurring and one-time fees, not just the authorization fee.

Use a complete cost model
- Fixed processing fee per transaction.
- Payment-method fee for cards, wallets, bank methods and other rails.
- Cross-border and currency-conversion charges.
- Subscription, tokenization or stored-credential fees.
- Fraud tooling, authentication and premium routing charges.
- Chargeback, retrieval and dispute fees.
- Refund costs and whether the original processing fee is returned.
- Reserve, payout, account or minimum-volume charges.
- MoR service fees, where tax, support or dispute work is bundled.
Adyen’s public UK pricing page describes a fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee and says other products are priced separately. It also says additional rates of up to 3% may apply to gaming and certain other merchant categories. The page is UK-focused: do not transplant one displayed country or method rate into another market. Request a merchant-specific schedule at Adyen’s pricing page and have the provider identify every add-on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk for a quote that can be audited
Give each provider a single spreadsheet containing monthly transaction count, average order value, 12-month volume, refund and chargeback assumptions, country mix, payment-method percentages, settlement currencies and peak-season volumes. Require the quote to show the effective cost per successful order and the cost of failed, refunded and disputed transactions. Ask whether rates are recurring, promotional, volume-tiered or subject to renegotiation.
Separate price from cash-flow impact
Two providers with similar fees can have different reserve policies, payout delays and currency-conversion practices. Ask how long funds can be held, what triggers a reserve review, whether negative balances can be debited from another account, and whether you can settle in the currencies in which your finance team pays costs. Model the working-capital requirement for launch, major content releases and chargeback windows.
4. Evaluate authorization, checkout and conversion controls
Approval rate is not a single company-wide number. Measure it by country, payment method, device, game platform, order value and customer history. A provider that accepts more legitimate players but creates more fraud loss may be worse than one with a lower headline approval rate and better net revenue.
Inspect the checkout experience
- Can the flow display local language, currency, payment logos and legally required disclosures?
- Does it work in the game, in a launcher and in a direct web store?
- Can players complete payment without repeatedly re-entering credentials?
- How are authentication challenges presented on mobile, desktop and console-linked flows?
- Can you preserve an account’s payment token when migrating products or storefronts?
Adyen describes intelligent routing, local acquiring, authentication and player-preferred methods for gaming. Stripe describes Smart Retries, local methods, in-app payment and direct web-store checkout. Treat these as capabilities to test, not as guaranteed uplift.
Define the metrics before the pilot
Agree on precise definitions for authorization rate, checkout completion, payment-method success, retry recovery, involuntary churn, false-decline rate, fraud loss and net revenue. Require dashboards or exports that let your team reproduce the calculations. Stripe reports that Stripe Billing recovered 55% of failed payments in 2025; this is a Stripe-reported Billing figure, not a forecast for your game or a result directly comparable with another provider.

5. Test fraud controls against game-specific threats
Game payments combine ordinary card fraud with account and item-economy abuse. A provider should explain which signals it supplies, what your team must build and how rules can be tuned without blocking legitimate players.
| Threat | What it looks like in a game | Controls to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Card testing | Many small authorization attempts using different cards or accounts. | Velocity limits, device and IP signals, adaptive challenges, network-level blocking and alert exports. |
| Stolen-card purchases | Fraudsters buy transferable currency or items and move them to another account. | Delayed delivery, account-age checks, item-transfer restrictions, risk scoring and post-purchase review. |
| Account takeover | An attacker logs into a genuine account and uses its stored payment method. | Login risk signals, step-up authentication, token controls, session monitoring and rapid rollback of compromised purchases. |
| Friendly fraud | A legitimate player disputes a purchase after receiving and using digital goods. | Clear descriptors, delivery and usage evidence, dispute automation and a documented evidence package. |
| Promotion abuse | Multiple accounts exploit introductory pricing, credits or referral rewards. | Account-linking signals, eligibility rules, device intelligence and limits on repeat incentives. |
Stripe’s gaming fraud guidance, updated April 19, 2026, describes card testing, stolen-card purchases of transferable items, account takeover and friendly fraud. Use those patterns as a test plan, then add threats specific to your economy. Ask how quickly rules take effect, whether analysts can run a shadow mode, how false positives are measured and who pays when an approved transaction later becomes a chargeback.
Balance protection with player conversion
Request separate reporting for blocked, challenged, approved and later-disputed transactions. A rule that prevents fraud by rejecting entire countries or high-value players can damage retention and lifetime value. Start with conservative thresholds in a pilot, review false declines daily, and maintain an emergency rollback path for an over-broad rule.
6. Confirm monetization and platform capabilities
List the exact product behavior the provider must support before reviewing demos.
- One-time purchases with reliable delivery confirmation to the game account.
- Recurring billing, plan changes, grace periods, retries and cancellation for subscriptions or battle passes.
- Network tokenization or stored credentials that comply with platform and authentication rules.
- Partial refunds, full refunds, credits and chargeback reversals tied to an order ID.
- Regional pricing and currency presentation without breaking entitlement logic.
- Creator, marketplace or partner payouts with onboarding and tax reporting where required.
- Webhooks or equivalent events for authorization, capture, refund, dispute and settlement.
Stripe’s gaming materials cover one-time purchases, subscriptions, in-game items, Billing, Radar, creator payouts and a Managed Payments option that includes tax collection and remittance, risk, disputes and customer support. Xsolla lists one-time and recurring checkout, tokenization, refunds, indirect-tax calculation, reporting, reconciliation and global payouts. Confirm which features are included in your proposed plan, which require separate contracts and which are limited by country or platform.
7. Measure integration and operating burden
Check technical fit before signing
Ask for a sandbox that mirrors production methods and for documentation covering your engine, backend language, storefronts and identity model. Review the provider’s developer material, including Xsolla developer documentation, for API objects, SDK maintenance, webhook retries, idempotency, signature verification and test-card behavior. For every payment event, define how your backend grants, reverses or withholds an entitlement.

Plan reconciliation, not just checkout
Your finance and live-operations teams need to reconcile game orders, provider transaction IDs, refunds, disputes, fees and payouts. Require exports at both transaction and settlement level. Test a month-end close with multiple currencies, partial refunds, failed renewals, chargebacks and a delayed payout. If a provider’s report cannot be joined to your game account and general ledger, the apparent integration speed will become ongoing manual work.

Stripe
Stripe’s gaming offering describes support for one-time purchases, subscriptions, in-game items, local payment methods, in-app payment and direct web-store checkout. It also presents Smart Retries, Radar fraud tooling, Billing, creator payouts and Managed Payments. Managed Payments is described as handling tax collection and remittance, fraud and risk, disputes and customer support; confirm market scope and contractual responsibility before treating it as an MoR solution.

Xsolla
Xsolla’s Payment Service Provider page presents the developer as merchant of record and Xsolla as PSP. It lists flexible one-time and recurring checkout, tokenization, refunds, indirect-tax calculation, reporting, reconciliation and global payouts, while assigning the developer responsibilities that include fraud monitoring, customer support, refunds and chargebacks, and tax management.
Its Buy Button product page advertises 700+ payment methods, 130+ currencies and 200+ geographies, plus anti-fraud, authentication, regional pricing, in-game-store and subscription products. Treat those as provider-published totals and verify the exact countries, methods and settlement terms in your agreement.
On August 14, 2025, Xsolla announced an Adyen partnership for Xsolla PSP. The announcement described Hong Kong as the initial eligible merchant-registration location and phased expansion into Europe, Singapore and the United States as licenses were secured. Because that rollout is dated, confirm current eligibility directly through the partnership announcement and your provider contact.

A practical comparison worksheet
| Category | Evidence to collect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Market fit | Enabled methods, local acquiring, settlement currencies and licensing by country | Can the provider serve the players we actually have? |
| Economics | Effective cost per successful order, reserve and payout assumptions | What is the net cost after failures, refunds, disputes and conversion? |
| Risk | Signals, authentication, rule controls, false-decline and dispute reporting | Can we protect the economy without suppressing legitimate players? |
| Product fit | Subscriptions, tokenization, refunds, entitlements and payouts | Does it support every monetization flow on the roadmap? |
| Operations | APIs, webhooks, reconciliation, support, incident process and exports | Can engineering, finance and support run it every day? |
| Contract | MoR duties, reserves, data portability, termination and permitted activities | Are responsibilities and exit costs acceptable? |
10. Pilot with your own data before committing globally
A controlled pilot should compare the same payment mix and countries, not one provider’s strongest market against another’s weakest. Keep prices, fraud rules, checkout placement and retry policy as consistent as possible. Run long enough to observe subscription renewals, refunds and disputes, not just first-day approvals.
Track net outcomes
- Authorization and completion by country and method.
- Retry recovery and involuntary subscription churn.
- Fraud loss, blocked legitimate orders, account takeovers and item reversals.
- Refund time, dispute win rate and support contacts per order.
- Effective fee per successful order and settlement variance.
- Engineering hours, reconciliation exceptions and incident-response time.
Document the test population, dates, traffic allocation and definitions. A provider’s published coverage or performance figure is not evidence that your game will achieve the same result. Your own segmented data is the basis for a launch decision and for future renegotiation.
11. Consider partnership routes only when they fit your business
If your company also provides relevant gaming services, a provider’s partner ecosystem may offer a formal referral or integration route. Adyen describes a partner ecosystem and directs existing partners to its partner manager or partner team for merchant referrals at its partner page. Xsolla documents a partner ecosystem with referral agreements for qualified gaming vendors; its eligibility guidance includes serving or specializing in games, customer references and internal review at the partner-ecosystem documentation.
These programs do not establish that every publisher qualifies or that compensation is available. Treat them as a business-development option separate from the technical and commercial evaluation, and verify current terms directly.

Quick Recap
12. Common evaluation mistakes
- Choosing by global method count. Counts do not show whether the right wallet or bank method is enabled for your entity.
- Using a headline rate as total cost. Method, cross-border, conversion, dispute, refund, reserve and optional-product fees can materially change the result.
- Assuming “gaming” means every mechanic is approved. Trading, cash-out, randomized rewards and prizes can alter underwriting.
- Leaving MoR duties vague. Tax, support, refunds, disputes and fraud work must be assigned market by market.
- Measuring only authorization. Net revenue, fraud loss, false declines, support burden and settlement timing matter too.
- Ignoring reconciliation and exit. A quick checkout integration is not a successful payments operation if finance cannot close the books or migrate tokens.
- Comparing vendor metrics as independent benchmarks. Provider-reported figures use different populations, dates and definitions.
