There is no verified Stronghold 4 low-end settings recipe or benchmark yet, so no responsible guide can promise a particular frame rate or percentage gain.
What you can realistically establish right now
Stronghold 4 is still in development. Steam lists a playable demo and a planned full release date of December 7, 2026, but both the requirements and the demo’s behavior can change before launch. Firefly Studios’ official Steam Community Q&A warns: “As is often the case with a game in active development, things may change over time as we make Stronghold 4 the best it can be.”

That status changes how you should troubleshoot. A specification on a store page is a threshold published by the developer, not a guarantee of smooth play. The available information does not include a tested low-end configuration, a frame-rate chart, a named reviewer’s benchmark, or a confirmed list of Stronghold 4 graphics controls. The demo is therefore the most useful evidence for your own machine.

- Change one setting at a time and record the result instead of assuming a setting from another game will exist or work the same way here.
- Recheck the official Steam listing and Firefly announcements before buying hardware, because the game is not finished.
Stronghold 4 minimum and recommended PC requirements
Steam’s 2026 listing gives the following requirements for the Windows version. The minimum and recommended entries both list 16 GB of system memory and 33 GB of available storage; the major difference is the processor and graphics card.

A PC below one of these entries is below the publisher’s stated minimum for that component. A PC between minimum and recommended is not automatically unsuitable, but you should rely on the demo rather than infer a frame rate from the table. Meeting recommended specifications is still not proof of a particular frame rate, because these figures are not independent performance tests.
Check your actual hardware in Windows
Do this before changing settings or ordering parts. Laptop names can hide several CPU and GPU configurations, so record the exact model rather than only the laptop family name.
- Check the processor and Windows edition. Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor model, whether Windows reports a 64-bit operating system, and the Windows version. You can also press
Windows, typedxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and read the System tab. - Check installed RAM. Open Settings > System > About or Task Manager > Performance > Memory. Record the installed amount, not merely the amount currently free. The listed minimum is 16 GB.
- Check the graphics adapter and graphics memory. In Task Manager > Performance > GPU, note the complete adapter name. In
dxdiag, use the Display or Render tab for additional details. Distinguish dedicated graphics memory from shared system memory; a laptop reporting shared memory is not the same as having a graphics card with the required dedicated memory. - Check storage space and drive type. In Settings > System > Storage, verify that at least 33 GB is free on the intended installation drive. Windows’ drive properties can identify whether the drive is an SSD or a hard disk, although the exact path varies by Windows build.
- Write down the results. A useful record includes CPU model, GPU model, dedicated graphics memory, installed RAM, Windows edition, DirectX capability, drive type and free space. This prevents a general label such as “gaming laptop” from hiding the component that is actually limiting you.
Compare each part with the requirement instead of judging the PC as a whole
Processor
Compare the exact CPU model with the Core i5-4670 minimum and Core i5-7600 recommended entries, or with the corresponding AMD equivalents listed by Steam. Do not compare only the brand, i5 or Ryzen family name, or clock speed. Two processors with similar names can have different generations, core arrangements and performance.
If the processor is below minimum, lowering image quality may not solve every slowdown. Strategy games can place substantial work on the CPU during busy simulation scenes, but no Stronghold 4 test data establishes how the game scales. Treat the CPU comparison as a warning to test carefully, not as a prediction of a specific frame rate.

Graphics card and graphics memory
The minimum entry names a GTX 1060 with 3 GB of graphics memory; the recommended entry names an RTX 2060 with 6 GB. Compare the full model and the dedicated memory amount. Integrated graphics and laptop variants should be judged by their exact model, not by a broad series label.
Being below the graphics threshold is the clearest reason to test a lower resolution and lower quality preset first. If the demo does not provide those controls, do not assume that a third-party utility can safely create them. No Stronghold 4-specific evidence confirms that a particular shadow, texture or effects setting exists.
System memory
Both published requirement levels specify 16 GB RAM. If your PC has less, close other applications before testing, but regard that as a diagnostic step rather than a substitute for the requirement. Check whether your laptop or desktop can accept more memory and which memory type it uses before purchasing anything.
Storage and DirectX
You need 33 GB of available space and a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 installation with DirectX 12 support. The Steam listing says an SSD is recommended. That recommendation concerns installation and loading suitability; the available evidence does not demonstrate that changing from a hard disk to an SSD raises in-game frame rate.

Use the demo as a controlled performance test
The demo is useful because it lets you observe your own hardware before the planned full release. It is not a guarantee that the final build will behave identically. Use a repeatable procedure so that a change is meaningful.
- Prepare a clean baseline. Restart Windows, close browsers, recording software and other programs that are not needed, and connect a laptop to its normal power supply. Note the resolution, display mode and every graphics option currently selected.
- Start with conservative settings. Open the demo’s graphics or display menu. If a lower resolution and a lower quality preset are available, select them for the first test. Do not call a setting Stronghold 4-specific unless you can see it in the current demo or in an official Stronghold 4 guide.
- Play the same situation. Use the same map, camera position, zoom level and type of activity each time. A quiet menu or empty map is not comparable with a large settlement or an active battle. If the demo does not offer a repeatable scene, record the circumstances as closely as possible.
- Change one option. Return to the same situation after changing a single control. Changing resolution, quality preset and several effects together tells you only that the combined change mattered; it does not identify the limiting option.
- Record observations. Write down resolution, preset, individual changes, scene, loading behavior, visible stutter and any frame-rate reading you obtain. There are no published Stronghold 4 benchmark results to validate a number, so your notes describe your machine rather than a universal result.
- Stop if the test is unstable. Crashes, driver resets, severe overheating or visual corruption are reasons to return to the previous setting and verify the system, not reasons to keep lowering options blindly.
How to choose settings without inventing a Stronghold 4 recipe
Start with the controls the demo actually exposes. A lower internal or output resolution generally reduces the amount of work sent to the graphics processor, while a lower quality preset may change several effects at once. Whether either change helps in Stronghold 4 depends on the build and on whether your CPU, GPU, memory or storage is the bottleneck.
If the picture is slow but consistent
Test the lower resolution first, then the lower available quality preset. Keep the same scene and make only one change between runs. If the lower resolution helps substantially, graphics processing is a plausible limitation. If it makes little difference, the processor, memory pressure, background activity or another part of the system may be limiting the result.
If the game stutters or pauses
Record whether the pause occurs while loading, when the camera moves, or during a large simulation event. Check available RAM, background applications, temperatures and free disk space. A setting change that improves an average frame-rate reading may not remove pauses, so record both smoothness and speed.

If an expected control is missing
Do not borrow a list of options from an older Stronghold title. The manual for Stronghold Legends, a different game, discusses controls such as particle detail, ground shadows, cloud shadows, grass, real-time shadows, bloom, bump mapping, texture detail, shader version, draw distance and geometry detail. Those historical controls do not establish that Stronghold 4 has the same menu or responds in the same way.
Diagnose the bottleneck before buying an upgrade
A responsible upgrade decision starts with the component that fails the published comparison and with the physical limits of your machine.
- Below 16 GB RAM: check the number of memory slots, supported capacity and memory type. Some laptops have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded.
- Below the listed graphics level: identify the exact desktop card or laptop GPU, available power supply, case clearance and cooling capacity. A desktop card cannot simply be assumed to fit or work in every system.
- Below the listed CPU level: check the motherboard socket, firmware support and cooling solution. A faster processor may require a motherboard or platform change.
- Less than 33 GB free: clear or move files only after confirming that the destination drive has enough capacity. Keep additional free space for Windows and updates rather than filling the drive completely.
- Using a hard disk: an SSD is recommended by Steam, but no available Stronghold 4 evidence proves a frame-rate improvement. Consider it primarily for storage and loading behavior unless your own testing shows a different result.
For laptops, upgrades are especially constrained. Verify the exact machine’s service manual or manufacturer specifications before buying memory or storage. For desktops, also check the power supply, connector requirements, physical dimensions and airflow. Do not buy a generic RAM kit or graphics card solely because a store description says it is suitable for gaming.
Troubleshooting branches
The demo will not launch
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and that the system supports DirectX 12.
- Check that the installation drive has at least 33 GB available.
- Verify that the CPU, GPU and RAM are not below the published minimums.
- Restart Windows and close background software before trying again.
- Check the current Steam listing and Firefly announcement for build-specific instructions or changed requirements.
If the machine is below minimum, repeated setting changes cannot establish that the final game will be supported. Record the exact error and hardware details when seeking technical help.

The demo runs, but performance is poor
- Record the scene, resolution, preset and graphics adapter in use.
- Test the lower available resolution, then the lower preset, one change at a time.
- Check whether the laptop is using its dedicated GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Watch RAM use, GPU use and temperatures during the same scene.
- Undo any setting that causes instability and keep the most reliable configuration rather than chasing an unverified frame-rate target.
The game feels fine in a small scene but slows in a large one
That difference is useful evidence, not a contradiction. Record the population, buildings, units or effects visible when the slowdown occurs and whether lowering resolution changes it. If resolution has little effect, the limitation may not be primarily graphics processing, but no Stronghold 4 benchmark is available to identify the cause conclusively.
What not to rely on
- Do not treat the minimum specification as a promise of 60 frames per second, a particular resolution or stutter-free play.
- Do not treat the recommended specification as an independently verified benchmark.
- Do not assume that controls documented for Stronghold Legends are present in Stronghold 4.
- Do not install generic optimization software expecting a Stronghold 4-specific result; no such result is established here.
- Do not purchase RAM, a graphics card or an SSD before checking exact compatibility and identifying the component that is actually below the requirement.
- Do not compare a laptop’s integrated graphics label with a desktop GTX 1060 or RTX 2060 without checking the complete model and dedicated memory.
Recheck the information before the full release
The planned December 7, 2026 release date and the current requirements are time-sensitive because development is ongoing. Before upgrading or setting expectations for the full game, revisit the official Steam listing, read the latest Firefly Studios announcement, and inspect the final game’s graphics menu. A later build may add, remove or rename controls, and a demo result may not represent release performance.
For now, the most defensible low-end approach is evidence-driven: establish whether your exact PC clears the 16 GB RAM, GTX 1060 3 GB, Core i5-4670-class and other minimum entries; test the demo at lower available settings; measure the same situation after each single change; and upgrade only after a compatibility check identifies a real shortfall.
