Trade Haunter to another player in Pokémon Legends: Z-A; it evolves into Gengar when the trade completes, according to All Things How. To keep that Gengar, arrange with your trading partner to trade it back to you.
Trade Haunter to evolve it into Gengar
The game-specific method reported by All Things How, updated October 18, 2025, is to trade Haunter to another player. The trade partner can then send the evolved Gengar back in a second trade if you want to keep it. Agree on the return before you begin.
How to set up a Link Trade
Nintendo documents Link Trade for both nearby local play and internet play. Follow its Link Trade instructions:
- Open the multiplayer Link Trade flow in the game.
- Choose a connection type: select Nearby Players for local wireless play, or Faraway Players to trade over the internet.
- Set a shared code. You and your trading partner each enter the same eight-digit code.
- Select Haunter and review the proposed trade.
- Confirm the trade. Both players must select Trade it for it to complete. Haunter evolves into Gengar when the trade completes, according to the game-specific guide.
- Arrange the return trade if you want your partner to send Gengar back. Use Link Trade again and confirm the second exchange together.
What the official game information confirms
The Pokémon Company International’s official game page explains that Pokémon can evolve through methods other than leveling and mentions Evolution stones, but it does not specify Haunter’s method. The trade trigger described above comes from the game-specific guide, while Nintendo’s support page explains how to use Link Trade.
