If your squad is under threat, prioritize getting out over winning one more fight: choose an exit, move together, use cover on exposed approaches, and leave before dwindling supplies or the match timer force a worse choice. The details below apply to the original Warzone 2.0 / Modern Warfare II DMZ. A different DMZ experience is planned for Modern Warfare 4, and its tactical extraction mechanics are not established in the available official information.
First, check which DMZ you are playing
DMZ is built around getting out alive with what you have found. Call of Duty described the original mode as an extraction experience in which squads take on missions and other objectives while trying to survive toward exfiltration (Call of Duty’s 2022 overview).
The steps and tactical details in this guide refer to that original Warzone 2.0 / Modern Warfare II DMZ. Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 DMZ deep dive, updated October 5, 2026, calls the new mode a persistent extraction experience, sets it in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, and gives a planned global launch date of October 23, 2026. It does not establish that the legacy exfil, radiation, smoke, or hostage-helicopter mechanics below carry over.
Choose whether to leave now or take another risk
Before moving toward an exit, make a quick squad decision: extract with what you have, or stay for another objective. If health, supplies, or confidence are running low, weigh the value already secured against the uncertain reward of continuing. In the original DMZ, expanding radiation could close exits, so waiting for a perfect run could leave fewer options (Digital Trends’ legacy DMZ guide).

Agree on a simple plan before the squad commits: who watches likely approach lanes, who tracks teammates, and what signal means board or disengage. This is coordination advice, not a special in-game rule. Keep the plan short enough to follow when the exit is contested.
Pick an extraction route in legacy DMZ
The original mode has two relevant options: a standard marked exfil and extraction through a Rescue Hostage contract. Neither is always safer; enemy positions, available time, squad condition, and contract availability matter.

The standard sequence and its risks are described in Digital Trends’ guide. The hostage mission’s requirement to extract with the hostage is also listed on the Rescue Hostage mission page. Treat a hostage contract as an alternative when it is available and viable, not as a dependable fallback.
Approach a threatened exfil without rushing into the open
- Use available cover and avoid sprinting blindly into a visible landing zone.
- On an exposed crossing, smoke may help obscure movement in the legacy mode, but it does not guarantee safety. The historical guide suggests it as a situational aid, not a proven way to defeat every ambush.
- Stay close enough to support one another and keep teammates informed about where the threat is and whether the route remains usable.
- If another team is holding the site, consider disengaging or changing plans rather than turning extraction into a prolonged fight. Reaching the exfil point does not make the approach or boarding safe.
Use the extraction window to scan, then board
At a standard exfil
In the original DMZ, calling the helicopter starts a wait before it arrives. Use that interval to watch likely approach lanes and position the squad; board promptly once it is safe rather than lingering at the site. At a hostage extraction
Follow the contract’s separate objective and leave with the hostage on the hostage-evac helicopter. The mission listing specifies that extracting with the hostage is required (Rescue Hostage mission page).
If a teammate is downed inside the helicopter
The Digital Trends guide says a player who is downed inside the legacy helicopter may still receive successful extraction credit if they have not been fully eliminated. This is a version-specific report, not a guarantee for other DMZ releases or future rule changes.

What is not confirmed for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
As of October 7, 2026, Call of Duty’s official Modern Warfare 4 materials describe the new DMZ as a persistent extraction experience and preview Hajin environments, threats, map and HUD information, enemy forces, vehicles, after-action reports, and points of interest. They also say more intel will arrive before launch. They do not provide a safe-exfil procedure or confirm that original DMZ’s marked exits, expanding radiation, smoke use, or hostage contracts work the same way. Check current in-game instructions after the new mode launches rather than assuming these legacy tactics transfer unchanged.
Call of Duty’s July 2025 access note says the original DMZ Beta remained free-to-play within the Modern Warfare II install; that statement concerns the legacy mode and does not establish Modern Warfare 4 DMZ access terms (Call of Duty’s July 2025 update).
