His remarks are not a Sony statement or a claim that discs have no value: they reflect one publisher executive’s view of a trade-off that affects players differently.
What did Take-Two’s CEO say about digital games?
In an investor Q&A, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive—the parent company of Rockstar Games—said discs may not make sense for consumers in some cases, particularly with a large game. Push Square and Video Games Chronicle reported his explanation: players often need to connect online to register or play anyway, so downloading the game can be more convenient than using a disc. The reports reproduce his remarks; they are not the original Q&A transcript. Push Square’s report and Video Games Chronicle’s report both attribute the argument to Zelnick.
The reasoning is about convenience and what a disc adds when an internet connection is already part of the experience. It does not establish that digital games are always cheaper, that all players prefer downloads, or that physical editions are useless.
What does Take-Two’s digital-sales figure mean?
Zelnick was reported as saying well over 90% of Take-Two’s business is digitally distributed in 2026. That figure describes Take-Two, not Sony, PlayStation customers overall, or the entire games industry. Push Square also discusses a 98% digital-revenue figure that includes microtransactions and downloadable content, but that is not a like-for-like measure of digital versus physical game sales: virtual currency, for example, has no equivalent physical purchase. Push Square explains the distinction.

How does GTA 6 fit into the disc debate?
The reports connect Zelnick’s comments to Grand Theft Auto VI. They describe the game as digitally distributed and say a boxed version may contain a download code rather than a disc. Push Square reports that a redeemed code cannot be traded or resold. These format details come from the reporting, rather than a primary publisher announcement surfaced here; a code in a retail box should not be treated as interchangeable with a physical game disc. Push Square’s coverage and Video Games Chronicle’s coverage provide the reported context.
For a player deciding between formats, the practical differences are access and swapping, reliance on downloads or online registration, the ability to lend or resell, and the value of collecting a tangible copy. A box that contains only a code may offer retail packaging, but it does not provide the lending and resale options associated with a disc.

What has Sony reportedly said about future disc production?
Video Games Chronicle reports that Sony plans to stop producing PlayStation game discs for games launching after January 2028. Push Square separately reports that Sony has said it would move cautiously. These are reported plans, not proof that disc production has already stopped; the primary Sony announcement was not available in the reporting cited here. Video Games Chronicle’s report covers the timeline, while Push Square’s report describes the cautious approach.

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has argued that ending disc sales could make the difference between owning a game and having access to a digital asset more prominent. He also raised possible reputational consequences, while acknowledging that he did not know Sony’s internal financial figures. His view is a consumer-ownership argument, not evidence of Sony’s business calculations. Video Games Chronicle reports Layden’s comment: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing.” Read the report.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, by contrast, has described himself as a digital consumer while recognizing that collectors may value physical games. That perspective underscores the point Zelnick’s convenience argument does not settle: a format can suit one buyer and disappoint another. Push Square reports Yoshida’s comments.
