You can reset a PS5 without a controller only if you can navigate its normal menus another way. Sony’s Safe Mode reset and system-software reinstall instructions require a controller connected by USB and a press of its PS button, so neither is an officially documented controller-free method. A paired PS5 Media Remote may work in the regular menus; USB-keyboard navigation is an unverified workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
Choose the right reset before you start
A full reset is intended to erase the console before you sell or give it away, or when you want to start over. Sony’s restore-default-settings guide distinguishes it from restoring default settings: Reset Your Console deletes user and game data and personalized settings, and Sony says the deletion cannot be undone. Restore Default Settings restores settings without deleting user or game data.
If you need anything stored locally, back it up before choosing a full reset. Do not select Reset Your Console unless you are prepared to lose the console’s user and game data.
Try the official reset path if you can reach Settings
Sony documents this path for a full reset: Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console. It applies if you can navigate the standard PS5 interface, but Sony’s guide does not establish a specific controller-free input method.

- Open Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Select Reset Your Console and follow the on-screen prompts only if you intend to erase the console.
If you only want to restore settings, choose Restore Default Settings instead. It does not delete user or game data, according to Sony’s guide.
Which controller-free options are worth trying?

Paired PS5 Media Remote
Sony’s Media Remote manual describes directional, Enter, Back, and PS buttons and says the remote can control a PS5 once paired. If yours is already paired and works, try it to navigate the regular Settings menu. This is a possible input for the menu reset path, not a documented way to select options in Safe Mode.

USB keyboard
A GeekBox video published on 2024-10-11 claims that a keyboard plugged into the PS5 can navigate Settings to Reset Your Console. That is an unverified third-party workaround, not a Sony-supported method. It may not work with your console or in Safe Mode; do not rely on it as your only plan.
Remote Play
Remote Play is not a confirmed substitute for a controller during a factory reset. The PlayStation Remote Play guide covers remote control in supported setups, but does not establish that its controls can complete this reset.

Why Safe Mode is not a controller-free reset
Safe Mode offers Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), but Sony’s Safe Mode instructions require you to connect a controller by USB and press its PS button after starting the console in Safe Mode. Sony’s instruction is explicit: “Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.” A Media Remote, keyboard, or Remote Play connection is not documented as a way around that requirement.
Reinstalling system software from a USB drive is also destructive: Sony says it deletes all console data. The process requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and Sony’s official reinstallation file, and still uses Safe Mode—so it does not solve the controller problem.

If no input method works
If the PS5 is stuck outside its normal menus and you do not have a working controller, the official reset routes described above do not provide a verified controller-free path. Borrow or replace a compatible controller, or contact PlayStation Support for help with the console or controller. Avoid starting a destructive reset until you can confirm the selection and are ready for the data loss.
