Monitor an FFmpeg YouTube stream at two levels: watch FFmpeg’s process and machine-readable progress locally, then check YouTube’s Live Streaming API for ingest and health status. Either signal alone can miss problems. A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, and an API status does not confirm that viewers can hear and see the result.
What the health check should detect
Separate failures by where they occur. A useful monitor reports which signal failed instead of treating every interruption as an FFmpeg crash.

Use the combination to distinguish an exited encoder, a likely local stall, an ingest or configuration problem, and a stream that appears healthy to the API but still needs human review.
Build the local FFmpeg check
Emit progress separately from diagnostic logs
Run FFmpeg with -progress directed to a program-readable destination such as a pipe. Consume its progress records and retain standard error separately for diagnosis. FFmpeg documents -progress as machine-friendly output; avoid relying only on its human-oriented status display. Record the process exit code so the monitor can alert if FFmpeg ends unexpectedly.

FFmpeg’s documented default for -stats_period is 0.5 seconds. That is the default progress/statistics update cadence, not a recommended health-check polling interval or a universal timeout. Choose a stale-progress threshold based on the stream and environment: allow for normal pauses or processing variation, then flag progress that has stopped beyond that operator-set threshold.
Protect the stream key
For RTMP-family output, the destination consists of server, port, application, and stream or playpath components. Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret. Do not include a fully expanded output URL in alerts or general-purpose logs, where the key could be exposed.

Check YouTube’s stream and health status
Read both status fields
Query the YouTube Live Streaming API for the stream bound to the broadcast and inspect status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus.status, and status.healthStatus.configurationIssues. The two status fields answer different questions:
streamStatusdescribes whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the configured stream is ready, inactive, or in an error state. YouTube definesactiveas receiving data from the stream.healthStatus.statussummarizes configuration health.goodmeans no issue at warning severity or higher;okmeans no error-severity issue;badmeans at least one error-severity issue; andnoDatameans YouTube has no health information available.
Do not interpret noData as healthy. It means the API has no health information to report, so keep it distinct from a positive health status.

Keep the issue details in alerts
When YouTube returns configuration issues, retain each issue’s type, severity, reason, and description in the alert. The issue list can identify problems involving video ingestion, audio or video settings, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codecs, or primary and backup streams. For example, YouTube describes video ingestion starvation as insufficient video to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. Use the returned issue to guide diagnosis rather than inferring every cause from FFmpeg’s local state.
Choose polling and alert behavior
Set the API polling cadence, stale-progress timeout, and alert hysteresis to suit the stream’s latency and reliability needs. The available documentation does not establish one generally appropriate polling interval or a method-specific API quota cost; confirm current quota details and tune polling for the number of channels and response time your monitor needs.

Use alerts that preserve the signal and its meaning. For example, distinguish “FFmpeg exited” from “FFmpeg progress stale” and from “YouTube health bad,” rather than raising an undifferentiated “stream down” alarm. This helps the operator know whether to investigate the local input or encoder, the output connection and stream configuration, or YouTube’s reported issue.

YouTube Live Streaming API methods require OAuth 2.0. The API documentation says service-account flow is unsupported for YouTube Live, so authorize with a YouTube user/channel that can access the relevant stream resource. Store access and refresh tokens in a protected credential store; do not put bearer tokens in query strings or logs.

Verify RTMPS transport when ingest fails
If FFmpeg continues to emit progress but YouTube reports inactive or an error, investigate the output connection and stream configuration. For RTMPS, check that the output uses the RTMPS protocol, the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, port 443, and the correct hostname for TLS SNI. YouTube associates SSL errors with incorrect server names, ports, or TLS setup; a timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS endpoint. YouTube states, “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.”
Test the alert and check what viewers receive
Before transitioning a broadcast to testing, YouTube’s documented workflow says to confirm that the bound stream is active. Its lifecycle guide explains that status.streamStatus set to active indicates YouTube servers are receiving data from the encoder. Pair that automated check with the YouTube monitor preview when picture and sound matter: a green API status is not a viewer-side quality check.
Make clear in each alert whether it represents a local process check, API-reported ingest or health, or a human preview inspection. These are different levels of assurance.
Troubleshoot common health-check results
- FFmpeg exited unexpectedly: treat the recorded exit status and separate stderr log as the starting point for local diagnosis; alert on the process failure.
- FFmpeg remains alive but progress is stale: report a probable local encoder or input stall once the chosen staleness threshold is exceeded. Do not use FFmpeg’s 0.5-second default update period as the threshold by itself.
- Progress continues, but YouTube is inactive, in error, or reports bad health: inspect the output connection, stream configuration, and the returned configuration issue details. For RTMPS, verify protocol, ingestion hostname/SNI, and port 443.
- YouTube reports
noData: report health as unavailable or unknown, not good; the API has no health information. - YouTube reports active and healthy, but viewers report trouble: inspect the monitor preview for picture and sound. API ingest status alone cannot establish viewer-side quality.
- API check cannot access the stream: verify OAuth authorization belongs to a YouTube user/channel with access to the resource, and ensure the monitor is not relying on an unsupported service-account flow.
