To farm in Manor Lords, check the fertility overlay for the crop you want before placing a field, keep early fields small enough for your households to sow and harvest in time, and use fallow or crop changes to let fertility recover. Crop seasons, rotation behavior, and fertilizer mechanics depend on the game branch, so check the field timeline and current patch notes for your installed version.
Choose a suitable location before building fields
Open the fertility overlay for each crop you are considering before placing a field. Fertility is crop-specific: a location that suits one crop may be poor for another. The value shown is the maximum fertility for that crop, and it declines as that crop is grown. A field can recover while fallow or while growing a different crop. See the official field guidance.
Fields can be placed freely, but cannot be relocated after construction. Building also flattens the ground and removes trees within the field’s footprint, so check the site before committing land. The game measures fields in morgen; the official wiki gives one morgen as roughly 2.1 acres. Treat that as an in-game unit conversion, not a recommendation for real-world farm planning.
Lay out fields around the labor you have
Place a few manageable fields near the Farmhouse to keep work and transport practical. Farmhouse families plow, sow, and harvest, so available labor—not just total land—limits how much farming you can complete. The official guidance notes that a small workforce can manage several half-morgen fields more easily than a few fields of three morgen or larger. There is no universally optimal field size: adjust it to your households, oxen, and logistics.
You can raise a field’s work priority when you need more control over task order. Use priority to direct attention to a time-sensitive field, rather than assuming every field can be worked at once. In particular, unfinished sowing before winter can mean the crop dies, making an oversized early farm a risk.
Choose crops by fertility and sowing season
Which crops you can sow, and when, depends on version. The official announcements describe these mechanics for specific branches; check the 12-month field timeline in your installed game rather than assuming every rule applies everywhere.
Rank #2
| Crop | Season and notes |
|---|---|
| Wheat | Winter crop in the cited beta notes; spring sowing is allowed for a quicker return with less yield. |
| Rye | Winter crop in the cited beta notes; spring sowing is allowed for a quicker return with less yield. |
| Flax | Spring crop in the cited beta notes; can only be sown in spring under those rules. |
| Barley | Spring crop in the cited beta notes; can only be sown in spring under those rules. |
| Oats | Spring crop in the cited beta notes. Main-branch notes for versions 0.8.090–0.8.104 say oats share fertility with barley, are more resilient, and can be eaten after threshing or converted into animal feed at a Livestock Farm. |
Season and crop details come from the official Manor Lords announcements and patch notes. The beta notes describe winter and spring crops; the oats details are from main-branch notes for versions 0.8.090–0.8.104. Pair the crop list with the fertility overlay for your chosen location before committing fields.
How crop rotation works
Growing the same crop reduces its fertility, while leaving a field fallow or planting a different crop allows recovery. Rotation is therefore a way to manage soil fertility, not a fixed schedule guaranteed to maximize yields in every region. Crop-specific fertility and seasonal sowing limits affect which rotation makes sense.

In beta notes for versions 0.8.104–0.8.110, crop rotation is described as experimental and always on. Those notes specify rotation triggers on September 1 for fields with nothing to harvest, after harvest, and on November 1 for crops that died without being harvested. Since this behavior is branch-sensitive, use your installed version’s field timeline as the practical guide. The official field page explains the underlying fertility benefit of fallow and changing crops.
Coordinate household labor and oxen
Farmhouse families handle plowing, sowing, and harvesting. An upgraded Plowing Station can employ oxen to plow and collect harvested crops, which can speed plowing. However, villagers cannot hand-plow a field while an ox is working it. Plan field area and task order around both household availability and oxen rather than expanding acreage on the assumption that the two methods will always work simultaneously.

Fertilizer and fertility improvement
In the cited beta patch notes, fertilizer comes from the Dunghill chain: assigned families collect dung, and pasture animals produce dung at rates that vary by animal. Farmhouse workers can apply fertilizer to fallow fields during summer, raising maximum fertility; the notes say its effect lasts just over two years. These are beta-specific details, not a guarantee for every branch. Check the current interface and patch notes before building a plan around them.
What to do if crops are not harvested
The beta notes say crops left unharvested into October begin to die gradually, leaving a window to salvage some yield. If a field is still waiting for harvest, prioritize it and ensure the Farmhouse has enough available labor and workable access. The same notes describe a November 1 rotation trigger for crops that died without being harvested, but that timing is beta behavior and may differ in other versions.

A practical first-season plan
- Check crop fertility: inspect the fertility overlay for each crop you may plant, since the field cannot be moved later.
- Start with modest fields: place a few manageable fields near the Farmhouse, sized for the households available to plow, sow, and harvest.
- Match crops to the calendar: use the in-game 12-month field timeline and current branch rules to choose what can be sown in the coming season.
- Watch field progress: adjust work priority where useful and avoid leaving sowing unfinished before winter or harvest undone into October.
- Restore fertility: leave a field fallow or plant a different crop; use fertilizer only if your version supports the beta mechanics described above.
For version context, the official version history lists 0.8.050 as the main-branch Update 5 on December 19, 2025, and 0.8.059 and 0.8.061 as beta releases in February 2026. It cautions that wiki content may be incomplete or change as development continues. These dated entries help identify branch context; they do not establish that every later farming rule applies to every installation.
