Fast travel in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria uses Mapstones. Repair or build two Mapstones, activate each one, then choose a working destination from the map or Mapstone list. The first ruined Mapstone at the opening outpost may not be repairable until you progress further.
How to unlock fast travel
- Find or build a Mapstone. There is a ruined Mapstone at the first outpost. North Beach Games Support cautions that it may require later progression before you can repair it: North Beach Games Support.
- Collect the materials and establish a second endpoint. A 2023 PC Gamer guide reports that repairing a ruined Mapstone costs one Black Diamond, while building one costs three Black Diamonds and 20 stone. The guide identifies Orkish Chests in the Mines of Moria onward and horde drops as Black Diamond sources, and says the first horde follows activation of the Forge of Narvi. These recipe and progression details come from that 2023 guide and may differ in a current game build: PC Gamer’s fast-travel guide.
- Make sure you have two working Mapstones. The PC Gamer guide says you need at least two; repairing only the first one does not create a destination pair.
- Activate each Mapstone. Building or repairing one is not enough. North Beach Games Support says to activate it before it can be used.
- Choose a destination from the map or Mapstone list. On PC, North Beach Games Support says to press M to open the map. Press X to mark a location; to rename a Mapstone, select it on the map and choose Edit. Controls and interface details may vary by platform or update.
Repair a ruined Mapstone or build one?
You can establish a travel endpoint by repairing a ruined Mapstone you find or by building one at a camp. The 2023 PC Gamer guide reports the following material costs; check the recipe shown in your current game, since the source does not confirm that these costs remain unchanged across versions.

Why can’t I travel to a Mapstone?
The Mapstone is not activated
After repairing or building a Mapstone, interact with it to activate it. An inactive Mapstone will not work as a travel point, according to North Beach Games Support.
You have only one working Mapstone
Fast travel requires a pair of usable endpoints, according to the 2023 PC Gamer guide. Find or build another Mapstone, then activate it.

The destination is not available on the map
Return to Moria’s map has layers and vertical connections. TU6 / Durin’s Folk release notes, dated November 18, 2025 and updated November 24, describe switching between map layers and selecting vertical links. On console or with a controller, the notes also describe a virtual cursor for waypoint selection. Check other layers if a discovered area or Mapstone is not visible in the current view: official Return to Moria release notes.
You arrive blocked or cannot complete the teleport
Update 1.1 notes say the game should place you closer to a destination when its Mapstone is blocked. If arrival still fails, clear nearby obstructions such as friendly dwarves, walls, crafting stations, or piles of treasure: official Return to Moria release notes.

The TU6 / Durin’s Folk notes also list fixes for a late-game Mapstone that could teleport players out of bounds and for players unable to travel to areas discovered by party members. Those notes are the latest relevant official release notes identified here; they do not establish whether later updates changed the interface or mechanics.
