To fight Jevil in Deltarune Chapter 1, first speak to him in the hidden floor beneath Card Castle, collect Broken Keys A, B, and C, and have Malius repair them into the Door Key. Use that key on Jevil’s cell door, then choose whether to pacify Jevil peacefully for the Jevilstail or defeat him with FIGHT for the Devilsknife. Both routes reward the Shadow Crystal.
This walkthrough applies to Chapter 1 in the paid release, including the Windows and Mac Steam version currently listed as v1.43. The Jevil key route is unchanged in that version. (Version differences)

How to unlock Jevil’s fight
- Progress through Chapter 1 until you reach Card Castle.
- On Card Castle 1F, use the far-right elevator.
- Select the hidden destination labeled
??????. - Follow the staircase down to Jevil’s cell.
- Talk to Jevil through the locked cell door.
You cannot fight Jevil immediately. Speaking to him is also the trigger that allows Seam to give you Broken Key A. If Seam does not offer the key, return to the hidden ?????? floor and talk to Jevil before trying again.

Broken Key A location
- Return to the Field.
- Enter Seam’s Shop.
- Talk to Seam and choose the dialogue about Jevil.
Seam gives Kris Broken Key A after Kris has spoken to Jevil for the first time. The key is near the shortcut door in Seam’s Shop, but it is obtained through the conversation rather than by picking up an ordinary floor item.

Broken Key B location
- Go to the Forest.
- Enter the room containing the dancing Scissor Dancers.
- Look toward the chest in the room’s southeast area.
- Move to the southwest corner, around the middle of the southern edge.
- Walk onto the black path where the stars do not shine.
- Follow the hidden path to the chest and open it.
The chest is visible from the normal floor but cannot be reached directly. The hidden black path begins in the southwest portion of the Scissor Dancer room and leads around to the chest. Three Rabbicks can appear along the route.
Some older walkthroughs call this the “Sheary room” or describe it only as the room with dancing paper figures. Use the Scissor Dancers as the reliable landmark. (Broken Key information)
Broken Key C puzzle solution
- Return to the Field.
- Go through the shortcut door.
- Continue toward the Great Board.
- Find the card-suit puzzle before the Great Board.
- Set the symbols from left to right to:
Diamond, Heart, Club, Spade - After the spikes retract, open the chest.
The solution comes from the order of the suit doors in Card Castle, read from the lowest floor upward: Diamond, Heart, Club, then Spade.
Important: the code is not Spade, Heart, Diamond, Club, and the puzzle does not require setting every symbol to a spade. Those instructions in older guides are incorrect or outdated.

Repair the Broken Keys
- Find Malius, the smith.
- Talk to him while Broken Keys A, B, and C are in your inventory.
- Choose the option to repair or combine the key pieces.
Malius combines the three pieces into the Door Key. The Broken Keys are key items, so they do not occupy ordinary consumable inventory space in the same way as healing items.
Open Jevil’s cell
- Return to Card Castle.
- Use the far-right elevator on 1F.
- Select
??????. - Walk down the staircase to Jevil’s cell.
- Inspect the cell door.
- Choose the option to use the Door Key.
The game displays a yes-or-no prompt when you inspect the door, but either response consumes the Door Key. A smaller door appears inside the larger cell door; enter it to begin the Jevil encounter.
If the hidden elevator destination or cell seems unavailable, check that you are using the far-right elevator on Card Castle 1F. The Jevil route does not use the other elevators. (Card Castle details)

Jevil’s battle commands and stats
Jevil has 3,500 HP, 10 AT, and 5 DF. His available ACT commands are:

Pirouette
Pirouette costs 20% TP and adds 0.5 Tiredness to Jevil. Its effect changes according to the turn number in a repeating nine-turn cycle. It cannot be used on the first turn because the party begins with 0 TP.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis costs 50% TP, uses all three party members’ turns, and adds 1 Tiredness to Jevil. It reduces Jevil’s attack for the current turn and also lowers his attack permanently until the relevant threshold is reached. Because it consumes Kris, Susie, and Ralsei’s turns, all three characters need to remain alive if you are relying on this strategy. (Jevil’s battle data)
How to spare Jevil
The peaceful route requires making Jevil Tired, then using Ralsei’s Pacify spell.
- Use ACT → Pirouette and/or ACT → Hypnosis.
- Keep building Jevil’s Tiredness while surviving his attacks.
- When Zs appear beside Jevil’s name, select MAGIC → Pacify with Ralsei.
Normally, Jevil needs 9 Tiredness before Pacify succeeds. That means either:

Jevil can also become automatically Tired late in the encounter under a special turn-count rule, even without reaching 9 Tiredness through the usual ACT effects.
Defeating Jevil peacefully awards the Jevilstail and the Shadow Crystal. Jevilstail is added to the armor inventory. If the armor inventory cannot accept it, the game creates a chest outside Jevil’s room instead.

- Select FIGHT when choosing a party member’s action.
- Attack Jevil normally and use ACT commands such as Pirouette when they help your turn economy or survival.
- Dodge the bullet patterns until Jevil’s HP reaches zero.
Jevil’s encounter has five phases. Phase changes depend on both his HP and Tiredness, so damaging him and using ACT commands can move the fight forward in different ways. When Jevil reaches 15% HP or lower, he skips to the attack sequence before Final Chaos.

Practical tips for surviving Jevil
- DEFEND and graze bullets. Grazing builds TP, which you need for Hypnosis, Pacify, Rude Buster, and healing spells.
- Protect Kris. Kris’s ACT commands are important for the most efficient peaceful strategy.
- Keep the whole party alive. Hypnosis requires all three party members’ turns.
- Use consumable healing when practical. This lets Ralsei preserve TP for Pacify or other support magic.
- Relearn the arena each phase. Jevil’s patterns change, so a safe position in one phase may be dangerous in the next.
- Handle the spade spirals deliberately. You can stay between the rotating spades or loop around them while grazing to build TP.
Peaceful or violent: which Jevil reward do you get?

Both outcomes provide the Shadow Crystal. The route only changes the equipment reward: Jevilstail for the peaceful outcome or Devilsknife for the violent outcome.
Version and save-slot notes
This route applies to Chapter 1 in the current paid release, including the Steam Windows and Mac release listed as version v1.43 on June 24, 2026. The free Chapter 1&2 demo also includes Jevil, but the paid release handles later-chapter carryover differently: the Chapter 1 result must be recorded on the same save slot used for the later chapter if you want the relevant Shadow Crystal and equipment to carry forward.
Jevil is not a recruitable character. Unused recruit data found in game files does not represent playable recruitment content. The historical one-hit scythe bug in the Switch demo is also not normal behavior in the current route.
