There are 18 Purgatory Gates in Ninja Gaiden 4: one in each of Chapters 1–13 and 15–19, with none in Chapter 14. Each is tucked off the Story Mode route and opens an optional enemy-wave trial. Use this chapter-by-chapter checklist to find them; for the Annihilator trophy or achievement, complete missed trials in their story chapters rather than through the Challenge Menu.
What to know before searching
PowerPyx’s October 21, 2025 guide counts 18 trials across 19 numbered chapters, leaving Chapter 14 without a gate. The gates are optional detours marked by blazing torii; Xbox Wire describes the trials as hidden off the main Story Mode path, where players fight waves of enemies. PowerPyx’s Purgatory route guide supplies the routes below. Its Chapter 11 section is blank, so that route is drawn from its broader collectible guide.
The gate numbers continue across chapters, so Chapter 15 contains Gate 14, not Gate 15.
Chapter-by-chapter Purgatory locations
Chapter 1 — Gate 1
Just before the second Caddis Wire gap jump, turn left toward three parked dump trucks. Go past them, turn left into the alley, then use the flying-bird technique to reach the roof. The gate is ahead.

Chapter 2 — Gate 2

Chapter 3 — Gate 3
After using the flying-bird flip to climb the shaft near the start, turn around and follow the alley instead of crossing the story-route bridge. The gate is at the dead end.
Chapter 4 — Gate 4
In the canyon, reach the narrow cliff where the route appears to continue with a flying-bird flip up a rock wall. Turn around and follow the narrow path away from the mission route.
Chapter 5 — Gate 5
After the temple ruin and chest, continue to the area where the route calls for a jump over a ravine. Drop into the valley instead. Follow the path back toward the main mission; the gate is at the top of a short flight of stairs.

Chapter 6 — Gate 6
After the shops and the brief Dragonfly Glider trip to wooden canyon platforms, go right. Use Caddis Wire to swing across the gap rather than continuing left, then follow the path to the gate.
Chapter 7 — Gate 7
At the start, take the stairs down on the right instead of the main-path stairs. The gate is at the end of the path; a Gourdy is behind it.
Chapter 8 — Gate 8
After clearing the room with two enemy spawn portals, shortly after obtaining the Pond Strider, go through the next door and take the hallway on the right. Use the flying-bird flip, then the Pond Strider to surf along a pipe into the gate room.
Chapter 9 — Gate 9
In the open area where you can use the Pond Strider freely, enter the water from the starting point and surf along the left side to a cave entrance. The gate is at the end of the cave.

Chapter 11 — Gate 11
At the four-rail section, continue along the rail until a train approaches. After dodging it, jump left onto the rail the train occupied instead of continuing on the main route. Ride it to the end.
Chapter 12 — Gate 12
After fighting two D.D.O. heavy enemies—one launcher user and one melee fighter—turn left and swing along the Caddis Wire section. Continue straight along the optional path and through a door. The gate is up the stairs in the next room.
Chapter 13 — Gate 13
At the start, turn around and go down the stairs. Turn left and use Caddis Wire to reach the raised walkway. Go left again, use two more Caddis Wire points to reach a railway, then surf the rail and wall-run to the end. The gate is up the stairs ahead.

Chapter 14 — No gate
The guides report no Purgatory trial in this chapter.
Chapter 15 — Gate 14
Look for the gate on the left platform in the same room as the previous collectible. The dedicated Purgatory route does not identify that collectible by name, so use the surrounding room and collectible context to orient yourself.
Chapter 16 — Gate 15
In the area where a large doll head is visible in the sky, turn right and pass a shop. Follow the side path, wall-running and jumping across gaps, to its dead end. PowerPyx notes this is the same location as Mission 1.
Chapter 17 — Gate 16
At the start, take the optional path on the right instead of climbing the main stairs. Use Caddis Wire and jump to the next platform; the gate is at the end of the path.

Each gate leads to an optional trial with enemy waves. Xbox Wire’s September 25, 2025 article, “How Ninja Gaiden 4 Curates a Challenge for Each and Every Player,” says players can sacrifice maximum health for greater rewards. Its example is Realm of Hell, which sacrifices 75% of maximum health; Xbox Wire notes that even attacks that once felt like minor chip damage can then be lethal. Read Xbox Wire’s description of Purgatory and its challenge options.
PowerPyx says completing all 18 trials unlocks the Annihilator trophy or achievement, and all challenges are required for Challenger of Challenges. It says Hero difficulty is sufficient for Challenger of Challenges, including its boss trials. These trophy and difficulty details are guide-reported rather than claims confirmed here by achievement-system documentation.

How to recover a missed gate
For Annihilator, PowerPyx warns that clearing a missed trial through the Challenge Menu does not count. Replay the relevant story chapter and complete its gate there. PowerPyx’s collectible guide says chapters can be selected freely in New Game+ to recover missed collectibles; it also recommends lower difficulty where appropriate for collectibles and trials.
