On PC, Hollow Knight saves are stored in a folder that depends on your operating system. Open the matching folder below to find the game’s profile files. Back up the folder before editing saves or moving them between systems.
Open the Hollow Knight save folder
Use the path for your operating system. In each case, the location is in your user account’s application-data area, not the game’s installation folder. Team Cherry lists these PC save locations in its official help page.

Identify the save profile files
Hollow Knight has four save profiles, commonly stored as user1.dat through user4.dat. The number corresponds to the profile slot. The community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki save-data reference also documents .bak1 files and version-suffixed backup copies.
Do not mistake a file in the game’s installation directory for a profile save. The profile files are in the platform-specific application-data folder listed above.

Steam Deck and other Steam setups
For a native Linux installation, start with the Linux path above. Steam’s August 10, 2022 cross-platform cloud-save announcement includes Steam Deck among the platforms covered by its changes, but the available guidance does not establish one universal Steam Deck folder for every compatibility configuration. If the Linux path does not contain the expected files, check which game runtime is being used rather than assuming another path.
Back up before changing or syncing saves
Before editing a profile, transferring saves, or resolving a cloud conflict, copy the entire Hollow Knight save folder to a separate location. Steam’s announcement advises backing up before syncing and choosing carefully if Steam presents a prompt to keep or overwrite conflicting files. Do not accept an overwrite until you know which copy contains the progress you want.

If a save seems to be missing
- Check the game’s local folder. Open the operating-system path above and look for the expected
user#.datprofile file. - Check Steam Cloud if you play through Steam. Steam’s announcement says cloud files can be downloaded manually from the Steam Cloud website and placed in the relevant local game folder.
- Review the sync prompt before choosing. If Steam reports conflicting local and cloud files, compare the copies or preserve both before selecting keep or overwrite.
Steam’s 2022 announcement said Windows, macOS, and Linux cross-platform cloud-save changes had been applied, including Steam Deck, and noted that macOS and Linux users might need to open the game, save, and quit to trigger an upload of an existing local file. Because this guidance is dated, treat it as context rather than a guarantee about every current setup.
Do not confuse the save folder with Steam’s cloud cache
Steam Support lists default local Steam Cloud storage folders, but these are not Hollow Knight’s game-specific profile folder. Use them only when troubleshooting Steam’s local cloud-storage data.

The PC folder instructions do not establish a user-browsable save-file path or manual extraction procedure for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox. Do not apply the Windows, macOS, or Linux paths to those versions.
