To catch Ashclaw in Fisch, fish in the lava at Roslit Volcano while it is erupting. Use Coal as bait and bring a rod that can fish in lava. Ashclaw has no listed time, weather, or season requirement.
Where and when to catch Ashclaw
Ashclaw is an Apex fish found at the lowest point of the volcano in Roslit Bay. It is available during an eruption, so wait until the volcano is actively erupting before casting into the lava. The Ashclaw entry and the Roslit Bay guide list no required time of day, weather, or season.
What bait and rod to use
Bait
Use Coal, Ashclaw’s listed preferred bait. The fish’s entry does not list a special time, weather, or season preference alongside that bait.
Lava-capable rods
You need a rod that can fish in the volcano’s lava. Current community guides list the Magma Rod and Reinforced Rod, as well as rods with the Invincible enchantment. The Roslit Bay guide documents additional options. These are compatibility recommendations, not guarantees that a particular rod will work after every game update.

The Fisch Wiki’s Reinforced Rod guide recommends it over the Magma Rod for general volcano fishing. That does not establish a best rod specifically for Ashclaw: no reviewed source provides a controlled, Ashclaw-specific rod comparison. Choose a lava-capable rod you have access to, and check the current game or an up-to-date guide if it will not cast into the lava.
How to reel in Ashclaw
The main challenge is the reeling minigame. Ashclaw is described as moving erratically and applying a -95% Progress Speed effect while you reel; this is a progress-speed penalty, not a 95% chance of failure or a catch-rate statistic. When it is hooked, keep your control bar over the fish’s moving line. The general fishing guide describes tracking the fish with the control bar as the core reeling mechanic.

Ashclaw’s entry also reports an exclamation point and shimmering sound when it takes the line. Those cues can confirm a hook, but they are general hooked-fish cues rather than signals unique to Ashclaw. A rod with useful control or resilience may make the minigame easier, but the available guides do not establish a best Ashclaw setup through testing.
