Free-to-play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, according to Steam Support.
Where to find free games on Steam
Open Steam’s Free Games results or browse the Free to Play category. You can also use the Free filter on the Store search page to narrow results.
These browse routes can surface more than complete, standalone games. Before claiming anything, open its Store page and confirm whether it is a full game, demo, downloadable content (DLC), soundtrack, playtest, or another product type. The listing shows the product and current access details.
Check what kind of free offer it is

Steam’s Store displays Free Weekend promotions with an end time. Do not assume a time-limited offer grants permanent access after the promotion; check the game’s current page for its terms.

How to claim and install a free game
- Sign in to the Steam account you intend to use. Games are associated with the account that adds them, and registered games appear in that account’s Library. See Steam’s new-user guide.
- Open the game’s Store page. Confirm the product type, offer type, current availability, and any compatibility information shown there.
- Choose the action currently displayed on the page. Follow its install or play prompt to download through Steam. The exact button wording can vary as Steam changes its Store design.
- Install from your Library. Once the game is listed in the account’s Library, open it there and select the install option.
Are free Steam games really free?
For free-to-play games, Steam Support says no subscription or credit card is needed to download and play. Some games offer optional in-game items or content for purchase using Steam Wallet funds. Steam says players are not required to buy anything to play or progress, though individual games may have their own restrictions.
Steam also defines an account with no purchased game and no Wallet funds as a “Limited User” account. Some Steam community features are restricted for these accounts. That account limitation is separate from whether a free-to-play game requires a payment card; it does not mean a card is required to download or play one.
