Jump over a lunge and strike from above, or give sleeping groups a wide berth if you want to avoid a pack fight.
Where to find Muckroaches
Muckroaches are found in Sinner’s Road, according to the Hollow Knight Wiki enemy reference. A Roach Guts quest guide points to a convenient farming area near the entrance from Greymoor. That is a useful lead, not a complete room-by-room route: the guide does not establish exact locations for every Muckroach.
How Muckroaches attack
A Muckroach may appear motionless while sleeping. Disturb it and it quickly pursues Hornet, jumping short distances and climbing walls. The enemy reference describes three behaviors:
- Forward leap: It can grab Hornet, drag her down, and maul her. This is the main attack to anticipate.
- Backward scurry: It may retreat after a leap misses.
- Bark-like bite: It can snap at empty space, leaving an opportunity to counter.
How to defeat them
Jump the pounce and counter
The enemy reference recommends jumping over a Muckroach’s leap and attacking from above. The Roach Guts guide also suggests a patient hit-and-run approach: land a few attacks, back away as the enemy prepares to pounce, then strike after it lands. These are source recommendations, not claims of comparative build testing. The enemy reference adds that crests with high attack knockback can repel a lunge.

Avoid waking a group
Not every encounter needs to become a fight. Some Muckroaches are caged, but their snarling and thrashing can alert nearby enemies. A sleeping Muckroach may also wake others, turning a single encounter into a pack attack. Open or broken cages can still contain sleeping enemies; loud snoring is a cue to move carefully. The reference says cautious routing can avoid waking sleepers in many rooms.
Roach Guts Wish: collect ten for Tacks
Benjin and Crull offer the Roach Guts Wish from a hut in the top-right area of Sinner’s Road. Accept it before farming: the quest guide says Muckroaches do not drop Roach Guts until the Wish is active. Collect ten, then return to the NPCs to complete the Wish and receive the Tacks tool.

Enemy values and the Act 3 variant
The Hollow Knight Wiki enemy reference lists a Muckroach’s health as 50/100 and says 20 kills are required for its Journal entry. It reports that black-threaded Muckroaches in Act 3 have doubled health and can gain standard Void attacks. These are community-reference game details, not values verified here against an official developer source.
