Start with the account that bought the game
A digital PlayStation purchase belongs to the PlayStation Network account that completed the transaction or redeemed the entitlement. It is not stored as a purchase belonging to the physical console. Before changing settings, confirm which account is signed in and whether that is the account used at checkout.

This matters in households where several people use one PS5 or PS4. A family member may see the console’s installed games but not see another account’s purchase in their own Purchased list. If the owner is not signed in, use the owner’s account for the initial check, or make sure the console’s sharing or primary-console activation is configured correctly.

Keep the title and edition in mind as well. A standard edition, deluxe edition, remaster, trial, and add-on can have separate entries. Searching for a different edition can make a valid entitlement look absent even when the account is correct.
Download a purchased game on PS5
- From the PS5 Games home screen, open Game Library.
- Select Your Collection.
- Find and select the game you bought or redeemed.
- Choose Download. The game is added to Downloads/Uploads and installs when the download completes.
Sony documents this route, including the current library labels, in its PlayStation Store download guide. If you own downloadable content, open the game from the library and scroll to Add-Ons to select individual expansions, packs, or other extras.
If the title is not immediately visible in Your Collection, use the library’s search and filters before assuming the purchase is missing. Check that you are viewing games rather than another media category, and look for a separate PS5 or PS4 version when both versions were included with the purchase.

- Open Library from the PS4 home screen.
- Choose Purchased.
- Select the game.
- Choose Download.
For DLC on PS4, open the game’s PlayStation Store page or use Your Add-Ons, then select the content you own. The store guide’s labels can vary slightly by region and system software, but the Purchased section is the key location.
If you use more than one PS4, the same account can view its purchase on either console. Access for other accounts depends on whether the purchasing account has activated the console as its primary PS4. That setting is an access mechanism, not a transfer of ownership.
Use the PlayStation App or PlayStation Store website
PlayStation App
- Open the PlayStation App and sign in to the account that bought the game.
- Open Game Library, then Purchased.
- Select the title and choose Download to Console.
A console must be linked to the account for remote downloading. If automatic downloads are not configured, the download may begin when the console is next turned on rather than immediately. The app cannot send a purchase to an unrelated console.
Remote downloading is useful when you want the game ready before you reach the console, but it does not bypass account, license, service, or storage checks. If the app shows the game but the console does not, check the console’s signed-in account and license state rather than purchasing a second copy.

- Sign in to the PlayStation Store with the purchasing account.
- Select your avatar.
- Open Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the game and choose Download.
The web library is useful when you are away from the console, but it still uses the same account entitlement. If the title is absent online as well as on the console, start with account and transaction checks rather than reinstalling the system.
Seeing a title on the website confirms that the account can see an entitlement, but the console still needs an active connection to PlayStation services to begin or validate many downloads. A temporary service interruption can therefore affect the download even when the web library is correct.
Understand what kind of access you have
A game can be absent or locked for different reasons. Identify the entitlement before troubleshooting so that you do not apply an ownership fix to a subscription benefit.

Sony explains catalog eligibility and access in its PlayStation Plus game catalog guide. A title leaving the catalog or a membership expiring can remove access even though the game was previously installed.
Do not treat every previously playable game as an outright purchase. If the title came from a catalog, the entitlement can depend on both the membership plan and whether the title remains available. If another account supplied the license through sharing, your account may be able to play it on that console without owning it personally.
If the game is not in your library
1. Confirm the purchasing account
Digital purchases are attached to a PlayStation Network account, not to the console itself. Sign out and check the email address or online ID of the account currently in use. Family members often have separate accounts, so a game bought by one person may not appear in another person’s personal Purchased list.
Sony’s download troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming the account first and checking transaction history to make sure the purchase succeeded.
If you have more than one email address, check each account’s library rather than relying on the console’s recently played list. A game can remain installed after an account change, while the new account has no entitlement to redownload it.
2. Check Transaction History
Transaction History distinguishes a completed purchase from a failed payment, cancellation, or an order made on another account. Online, sign in to Account Management and select Transaction History. Sony says the default online view covers the previous two years; use the date-range control for an older purchase.

For the web and console procedures, see Sony’s transaction-history instructions. Match the title, purchase date, and account. If no transaction or redemption appears, you may be using the wrong account or remembering a catalog entitlement as an outright purchase.
For an older game, the two-year default view is not proof that the purchase never happened. Expand the date range and check the account that originally made the payment. A completed transaction is useful evidence when you later contact support, especially if the title still does not appear after restoring licenses.
3. Look for hidden games
PlayStation lets you hide games from the library. A hidden title can remain purchased while disappearing from normal collection views. Inspect the hidden-games setting and unhide the title. Sony notes that hiding is applied across consoles, so changing it on one console affects the library view elsewhere for that account.
Hiding is a display setting, not a deletion of the entitlement. If the game appears in Transaction History but not in the normal collection, check this setting before changing accounts or rebuilding storage.

4. Recheck PlayStation Plus access
If you played the game through PlayStation Plus, open the membership details and confirm that the subscription is active and includes the required benefit. Essential, Extra, and Premium/Deluxe benefits are not interchangeable, and catalog availability can change. A catalog game may show a lock or lose its launch option when the plan or catalog entitlement no longer applies.
Installed files do not prove continuing access. The console can retain the game data while the account loses the applicable Plus benefit. Confirm the plan and current catalog listing before deleting and redownloading anything.
5. Check sharing and primary-console settings
When a different account bought the game, the owner must have the appropriate sharing feature enabled. On PS5 this is Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4 it is the owner’s primary PS4 activation. Sony lists these settings among the ownership checks for games that cannot be started. Sharing does not transfer ownership to your account, so the owner account may still be required if the console is not activated correctly.
Check these settings on the account that owns the game, not only on the account that is trying to play it. If the owner changes the designated console, access for other local accounts can change even though the purchase itself remains valid.
Restore licenses when a game is missing or locked
Restoring licenses makes the console recheck the account’s digital entitlements. It does not delete installed games or saved data.
PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses and confirm.
PS4
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account Management.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose Restore.
Use this when the correct purchase is in Transaction History but the library does not reflect it, an installed game shows a padlock, or an add-on cannot be found. Sony’s complete procedure and the situations it can address are in its Restore PlayStation licenses guide. Restoring licenses cannot create an entitlement that was never purchased, redeemed, or included with an active membership.
Restore licenses after confirming the account, rather than using it as the first response to every download problem. It is an account-and-console synchronization step; it will not fix an expired catalog benefit, an incorrect account, an unavailable network service, or insufficient storage.
When the download will not start or stops
Check service status and system software
A store or PlayStation Network outage can prevent a valid purchase from downloading. Check the current PlayStation service status, install any available system-software update, and retry. Sony includes both checks in its download troubleshooting steps; service availability and menu labels can change over time.
If service status shows a problem, waiting for restoration is more useful than repeatedly canceling the purchase. If there is no outage, continue with the queue, storage, and license checks below.
Pause, resume, or restart the queue on PS5
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the control center.
- Select the stalled item and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still fails, cancel and delete the queued download.
- Return to Game Library > Your Collection, select the game, and start Download again.
Deleting a failed queue entry is not the same as deleting your purchase. The entitlement remains on the account, so you can start the download again from the library.

Use the same principle if a remote download from the app appears delayed: verify that the intended console is linked, then check the console’s Downloads/Uploads queue after it is turned on.

On PS5, open Settings > Storage. On PS4, use Settings > Storage. The game’s store or download page shows the required free space; large updates can require additional temporary room. Free space affects installation, not whether the purchase appears in your library. Do not buy a storage device to solve an account, license, or missing-library problem.
If storage is the only failing check, remove enough unneeded content to meet the displayed requirement and retry. Storage hardware is relevant only when the console genuinely lacks capacity; it cannot restore a missing transaction or unlock a game.
Retry after eliminating account and license errors
If the title is visible, the transaction is complete, the correct membership or sharing entitlement is active, and enough storage is available, retry after restoring licenses and checking service status. A padlock, “cannot use content” message, or repeated download error points to a different branch than a title that is simply absent from the library.
Find and install add-ons you already bought
Base games and DLC can appear in different places. On PS5, select the game in your collection and scroll to Add-Ons. On PS4, open the game’s PlayStation Store page or Your Add-Ons. In either case, confirm that the add-on matches the game’s region and edition; a separately purchased expansion cannot be used with an incompatible base-game license. Downloading the base game does not necessarily install every owned add-on automatically.

If an add-on is listed as purchased but not installed, select it individually. If it is absent, repeat the account, transaction, hidden-content, Plus, sharing, and license checks used for the base game. A DLC purchase can be valid while the corresponding base-game version is different, so compare the edition and region shown on the store page.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support after you have confirmed the account, transaction or entitlement, service status, storage, and licenses. Include the exact error message, what happened, the steps that reproduce it, the date and time of the attempt, and a screenshot or video if available. Those details let support distinguish a payment record, account-license, store-service, and installation problem without asking you to repeat the same basic checks.
Have the purchasing account available when you contact support. Explain whether the title is missing, locked, stalled in the queue, or missing only an add-on. Mention whether the game came from an outright purchase, a redemption, PlayStation Plus catalog access, or another account’s sharing setup.
Do not repurchase the game merely because it is not visible on one console. A completed transaction remains associated with the purchasing account, while a Plus catalog entitlement, a shared license, and an outright purchase follow different rules.

Use Account Management’s Transaction History. The default online view covers the previous two years, so select a wider date range for an older purchase. PS5 and PS4 also provide Transaction History in their account settings.
Why is my PlayStation game locked after I downloaded it?
Check whether it came from PlayStation Plus, whether the membership and catalog access are still valid, or whether another account owns it through sharing. If the entitlement is correct, restore licenses.
Will restoring licenses delete my saves or installed games?
No. Sony says restoring licenses does not affect saved data. It makes the console recheck digital entitlements, but it cannot create a purchase or restore an expired catalog benefit.
Why will my purchased game not download?
Check PlayStation service status and system software, pause and resume the queue, cancel and restart a failed PS5 download if necessary, and verify free storage under Settings > Storage. Storage problems affect installation, not whether the purchase appears in the library.
