On most Rust hosting setups, the file you need is server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg. Open it with your host’s file manager or SFTP, edit it as plain text with one console command per line and no leading + sign, save it, then restart the server. Rust does not apply changes from this file to a server that is already running.

The exact outer folder and absolute path depend on the host. For example, one managed layout uses /home/container/server/rust/cfg/server.cfg. If the file is absent, create a file named exactly server.cfg inside the correct cfg directory. Do not edit serverauto.cfg; it is used differently and may be reset to defaults.

The standard location of Rust server.cfg
The conventional location is:
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg
Here, <identity> is the identity name assigned to your server. It may be a name such as rust, but hosts are free to use a different value. Do not assume that the word rust is always the identity folder; open the server directory and use the folder that contains your instance’s configuration files.

/home/container/server/rust/cfg/server.cfg
That absolute path is an example of one provider’s filesystem, not a universal Rust path. On another panel, the same file may appear under a different home directory, account name or instance folder. The relative path inside the server data directory is the reliable starting point.
Choose an access method

Regardless of method, you are looking for a plain-text file named server.cfg inside the instance’s cfg folder. If you see several identities, edit the one used by the server you intend to restart.

Find server.cfg in a hosting panel
- Stop or otherwise prepare the instance according to your host’s procedure. A restart is required after saving, and some panels warn you before editing files while the server is running.
- Sign in to the game-server control panel and open the instance for your Rust server.
- Open the panel’s Files, File Manager or similarly named section.
- Open the
serverdirectory. - Open the folder matching your server identity.
- Open
cfg. - Select
server.cfgand choose Edit. If the file is not listed, follow the creation steps below instead of editingserverauto.cfg. - Make the required change, save the file and restart the Rust server from the panel.
One common panel layout presents the path as server/rust/cfg/server.cfg. If your panel starts you in a directory called /home/container, the same location can appear as /home/container/server/rust/cfg/server.cfg. The visible path is host-specific; the folder sequence is what you should verify.
Find and edit it over SFTP
- Obtain the SFTP hostname, port, username and password or key from your host. Use SFTP, not ordinary FTP, when the provider specifies SFTP.
- Connect with an SFTP client and identify the directory that corresponds to the server files shown in the panel.
- Browse to
server/<identity>/cfg. - Download
server.cfgbefore editing so you have a local backup. Keep the original filename and extension. - Open the downloaded file in a plain-text editor, make the change and save it as plain text.
- Upload the edited file back to the same
cfgdirectory, confirming replacement when the client asks. - Restart the matching Rust instance in the host panel or through your normal service manager.
If SFTP opens in a directory that does not contain server, you may be in the account’s home directory rather than the game-server root. Use the path shown by the panel, or ask the host which directory is mapped to its Files view. Do not upload the file into a similarly named backup, log or world-save folder.
What to do when server.cfg is missing
Some host documentation notes that Rust may not create server.cfg automatically on a first installation. An empty or newly installed server can therefore have a cfg folder without this file.

- Confirm that you are in the active instance’s
server/<identity>/cfgdirectory. - Use New File, Create File or the equivalent SFTP action.
- Name the file exactly
server.cfg, including the lowercase.cfgextension. - Open it in the editor and add one valid console command per line.
- Save it and restart the server.
On Windows, Notepad can silently append .txt. A file that appears as server.cfg in a dialog may actually be server.cfg.txt if extensions are hidden. When saving locally, set Save as type to All Files, type server.cfg as the filename and then verify the complete name in File Explorer or your SFTP client. A file with the extra .txt extension will not be read as the intended configuration file.

Treat the file as a list of console commands, not as a JSON, YAML or Windows INI document.
- Put one command on each line.
- Do not put a leading
+before a command. The plus-prefixed form commonly used in startup parameter strings is not the format expected in this file. - Keep the command name and its value on the same line in the form required by Rust.
- Remove accidental quotation marks, bullet characters and rich-text formatting introduced by word processors.
- Save the file before restarting the instance.
Because the file is plain text, a browser editor or a programmer’s text editor is safer than a word processor. If you edit locally, close the file before uploading it so that an older unsaved copy cannot overwrite the corrected version.
Apply the changes: restart is required
Changes saved in server.cfg do not alter a Rust server that is already running. Restart the instance after every configuration edit that you want Rust to load.
- Save the file and confirm that the timestamp or file contents changed in the panel.
- Use the panel’s Stop and Start controls, or its Restart control if provided.
- Wait for the server to finish starting and become available again.
- Check the in-game behavior or console output that the setting is intended to affect.
Simply refreshing the Files page, reconnecting with SFTP or restarting your game client is not enough. The Rust server process must be restarted so it reads the file during startup.

Do not edit serverauto.cfg
serverauto.cfg is not a substitute for server.cfg. A provider specifically warns that editing it can cause it to be reset to default values. Put persistent server settings in server.cfg unless your host’s current documentation explicitly directs you to another file.
If you already changed serverauto.cfg, restore the intended values in the proper configuration file, save it and restart. Keeping a backup of the original files makes it easier to recover from an accidental overwrite.
Why a server.cfg change may appear not to work
The file is in the wrong identity folder
Hosts can store multiple identities under server. If you edited server/example/cfg/server.cfg but the startup configuration launches another identity, Rust will never read the file you changed. Compare the identity named in the server’s startup or panel configuration with the folder you edited.

The filename has an extra extension
Check for server.cfg.txt, a duplicated extension or a misspelling such as serverconfig.cfg. The required name is exactly server.cfg.
You did not restart the process
A saved file is not a live reload. Perform a full server restart and wait for startup to complete before testing again.

The line format is invalid
Confirm that every setting occupies its own line and that no line begins with +. Remove copied bullets, smart quotes or other non-command characters. If one newly added line is suspect, remove it, restart and test the server with the remaining known-good lines.
The panel’s Settings page overrides the file
Documentation is inconsistent about precedence. One host guide states that values in server.cfg override startup options, while another warns that settings entered in the panel’s Settings page override manual file edits. This behavior is host-specific and can change with the panel’s startup generator.

Remove or change the conflicting value there, save the panel configuration, then edit server.cfg and restart. If the panel intentionally regenerates configuration at startup, use the panel field for that setting or follow the provider’s documented precedence order.
The edited file was not uploaded or saved
With SFTP, verify that the upload completed to the active instance’s cfg directory rather than to a local download folder or a different server. With a browser editor, reopen the file after saving and confirm that the new line is still present.
Another process restores the file
If your changes disappear after a restart, compare the file before and after startup. A control panel, deployment script or host template may be rewriting it. Do not keep changing the same file blindly; identify which panel field or automation is generating the replacement and update that source instead.

Can you change settings without restarting?
A host guide suggests that some settings can be entered through the in-game or RCON console for an immediate, in-memory change. The same guide mentions writecfg as a way to save console changes back to a configuration file. This behavior should be treated as host- and version-dependent rather than guaranteed.

For dependable deployment, edit the correct server.cfg file and restart the server; that is the documented application path for file-based changes.
Panel editor or SFTP: which should you use?
Use the panel editor when
- You need to change a small number of lines quickly.
- You are not comfortable locating the host’s SFTP root.
- You want the panel to show the exact directory used by the running instance.
Use SFTP when
- You want a downloadable backup before editing.
- You need to compare versions or transfer several configuration files.
- The panel editor is unavailable or truncates the file.
Neither method changes Rust’s loading rule: the file must be in the active identity’s cfg directory, use the exact filename and format, and be followed by a server restart.
A safe editing checklist
- Identify the active server identity and its
server/<identity>/cfgpath. - Confirm that you are editing
server.cfg, notserverauto.cfg. - Download or copy a backup before making changes.
- Use plain text with one command per line.
- Do not add leading
+signs. - Check for a hidden
.txtextension on Windows. - Save or upload the file to the active instance, then reopen it to verify the contents.
- Inspect the panel’s Settings page for a conflicting value.
- Restart the Rust server and wait for it to finish starting.
- If the setting still fails, test one change at a time and check whether the file is being regenerated.
The shortest reliable procedure
- Open
server/<identity>/cfgin your host panel or through SFTP. - Create
server.cfgif it does not exist. - Edit it as plain text, placing one command on each line and no leading
+. - Save or upload the file.
- Check for a panel setting that overrides the same value.
- Restart the matching Rust server.
If those six steps are followed and the setting still does not take effect, the likely causes are an incorrect identity path, a hidden filename extension, invalid line formatting or a host panel that regenerates settings. Resolve those in that order before changing unrelated files.
