Use the server console to moderate players in 7 Days to Die. Identify the correct player with listplayers (or its short form, lp), then run kick <player name> [reason] for an immediate removal or ban add <player name> <duration> <unit> [reason] for a timed ban. To reverse a ban, use ban remove <player name>; ban list displays current bans.

Run these commands in the game-server console or the console interface supplied by your host. Do not include the angle brackets; replace them with the actual name, number, duration, or reason.
Before you remove or ban anyone
Make sure you have console authority
A player cannot use moderation commands merely by joining the game. The account must be an administrator or have a permission level that includes the command. If the console returns an unknown-command or permission error, resolve access first rather than repeatedly changing the command text.

Identify the exact player
- Run
listplayers, orlp, and copy the name exactly as the server displays it. - If two names look alike, run
listplayerids, orlpi, and note the platform ID associated with the intended player. - Check the result against your moderation record before acting. A kick is immediate, and a ban can prevent a legitimate player from reconnecting for the entire duration.
Name matching and ID handling can differ between builds. The documented command syntax is name-based, while the ID listing is the practical way to disambiguate similar names. If your build accepts an ID in a moderation command, use the format shown by its own console help; do not assume an ID can be substituted for a name on every server.
How to kick a player
Basic kick
Enter:
kick PlayerName
Replace PlayerName with the exact connected name. The server disconnects that player but does not create a continuing ban. A kick is appropriate for a one-off disruption, a warning that requires an immediate disconnect, or a situation in which you want the player to be able to return.

Kick with a reason
Add a short explanation after the name:
kick PlayerName griefing
The reason is optional. Use a concise, factual description such as “voice abuse” or “testing connection,” rather than a long message that could be parsed as additional arguments. Record the reason separately if your staff needs an audit trail; the command itself is not described as a complete moderation-log system.
What happens after a kick
- The targeted player is removed from the current server session.
- A kick alone does not establish a timed ban.
- The player may try to reconnect unless another access control, such as a ban or whitelist rule, blocks them.
- If the wrong person disconnects, verify the output of
listplayersand use a ban only after confirming the identity.
How to apply a timed ban
Use the required four-part form
A timed ban requires a name, a number, and a unit:
ban add PlayerName 1 year cheating
In this example, 1 is the duration, year is the unit, and cheating is an optional reason. The documented unit range runs from minutes through years. The duration and unit are not optional, so ban add PlayerName is incomplete.
Choose a duration and unit
Use the unit names accepted by your build, with the documented range being minutes up to years. Examples of the intended structure are:

The examples illustrate syntax, not a required punishment scale. Decide the length under your server rules and state that policy to players before enforcing it. Because command parsers vary, confirm pluralization and supported unit names with the server’s help output or a harmless test on a private instance.
Understand what a timed ban changes
A ban is recorded in the server’s ban data and is intended to prevent the player from joining until the specified period expires. The available documentation establishes timed bans; it does not establish a universal permanent-ban keyword or prove that every current build treats an omitted or zero duration the same way. Do not improvise a permanent-ban value. If you need an indefinite restriction, consult the command help for your exact build and document the result for your staff.
Include a reason consistently
Although the reason is optional, including one makes later review easier and reduces mistaken unbans. Keep it short and objective: identify the rule, incident, or evidence without publishing private information in a shared console transcript.
How to view and remove bans
List current bans
Run:
ban list
Use the result to check spelling, review active restrictions, and confirm whether a previous ban was actually recorded. If the list is empty immediately after a successful command, verify that you are connected to the same server instance and that the command was accepted without an error.
Remove one player’s ban
Run:
ban remove PlayerName
Use the name shown by the server’s ban listing. This lifts that player’s recorded ban; it does not grant admin rights, change the whitelist, or undo a separate kick. If the player still cannot connect, check for another ban entry, a whitelist requirement, an authentication problem, or a different server endpoint.

Grant yourself or another person admin access
Add a full administrator
From an account that already has authority, enter:
admin add ModeratorName 0
The command writes the entry to serveradmin.xml. Hosting guides report that a restart is not needed after this command, but behavior can vary by build and hosting panel. Have the new administrator reconnect or run a harmless command to confirm that the permission took effect.
Level 0 is commonly used for full administrator access. Lower numbers represent more power in the documented permission model, so assigning level 100 is deliberately less powerful than assigning level 0. Never grant level 0 merely to solve a single kick or ban request when a narrower permission will do.
Check the result safely
- Run
listplayersto confirm the target name if the person is online. - Have the newly added administrator run a non-destructive command that their role should allow.
- Keep a record of who received access, which level was assigned, and when it was granted.
- Remove or reduce access when the staff role ends; leaving old administrators in the file creates an avoidable security risk.
Delegate kick and ban powers without full admin
You can give a moderator access to selected commands through command-permission levels instead of making them a level-0 administrator.
Set the command levels
For example:
cp add kick 100cp add ban 100
These commands set the minimum level for kick and ban to 100. Then assign the moderator that level:
admin add ModeratorName 100
In the documented model, a command set to level 100 can be used by administrators at levels 0 through 100, because lower numbers are more powerful. This lets a level-100 moderator run the two moderation commands while withholding the broader powers associated with level 0.

Limitations of delegated permissions
- The exact comparison rule for levels is described inconsistently in older community discussions. Confirm the behavior on your server before relying on it for staff separation.
cp addchanges the command’s required level for the server, not just for one individual.- Granting level 100 may also expose any other command configured at level 100. Review the complete permission table before assigning it.
- Keep at least one trusted level-0 administrator available in case a moderator changes a command permission incorrectly.
Permission defaults and why they differ
A community command table documented for Alpha 20 Stable B238 lists kick, ban, kickall, whitelist controls, and ban-management commands at default permission level 0. The same table lists commands such as help, listplayerids, and getoptions at level 1000. Other hosting documentation reports kick and ban at level 1 in the stock serveradmin.xml.
Those reports cannot all describe every build and configuration. Treat the copy of serveradmin.xml used by your server as authoritative. If a command fails despite apparently correct syntax, inspect its configured permission level and the level assigned to your account before changing the command.
Understanding serveradmin.xml
What the file contains
serveradmin.xml stores the server’s administrators, bans (also called the blacklist), whitelist entries, and command permission levels. It is the persistent configuration behind the access decisions that commands make.
Edit it only while the server is stopped
Stop the server before making a manual edit. A running server may overwrite your changes when it saves its own state. After saving a valid XML file, start the server and verify the resulting permissions and ban list in the console. Preserve a backup before editing so a malformed file does not remove every staff or access entry.
Find the active file
The location is not universal. Older Windows forum guidance places saves under a path resembling C:Users<name>AppDataRoaming7DaysToDieSaves; hosted servers may use a /saves directory or the server root. The actual location and filename can be changed in serverconfig.xml: AdminFileName selects the administration filename, while SaveGameFolder sets the save path.

Do not assume that the first file named serveradmin.xml on disk is active. Check the server’s configuration and hosting-panel volume, then confirm a change through the console. On some installations the file is not created until an administrator command has been run for the first time.
Use commands instead of hand editing when possible
Commands such as admin add, ban add, and cp add let the server write its own XML structure. Manual editing is most useful for recovery or bulk review while the server is stopped. Keep XML syntax intact, including closing tags and escaped characters, and restart only after the file has been validated.

- Capture identity: run
listplayers; uselistplayeridsif names are similar. - Check policy: determine whether the incident calls for a kick, a timed ban, or no action.
- Choose the least privilege: give staff a delegated level when they do not need full administration.
- Execute once: enter the exact command and wait for the console response instead of issuing repeated bans.
- Verify: use
ban listfor a ban, or have the kicked player confirm disconnection through your normal communication channel. - Document: record the player identity, command, duration, reason, moderator, and timestamp in your own staff log.
- Review: use
ban removewhen an appeal is accepted, and periodically audit administrators and command levels.
Troubleshooting failed commands
“Unknown command” or a syntax error
- Confirm that you are in the dedicated-server console, not a normal player chat box.
- Check spelling:
listplayers,listplayerids,kick,ban add,ban list, andban removeare separate commands. - For a ban, include all required fields: name, numeric duration, and unit.
- Use the exact unit spelling accepted by your build and check its help output.
“Permission denied”
- Confirm that your account appears in the active
serveradmin.xml. - Check the account’s numeric level and the command’s configured level; lower numbers are intended to be more powerful.
- Remember that defaults differ between documented Alpha 20 configurations and other builds.
- Ask a level-0 administrator to inspect permissions rather than repeatedly adding yourself.
The wrong player was affected
Stop and verify identity with listplayers and, where needed, listplayerids. A kick can be followed by reconnection, but a ban requires deliberate correction with ban remove. Tell the affected player what happened and record the correction so staff do not repeat it.
The ban does not appear or the player can still join
- Run
ban liston the same server instance the player is attempting to join. - Check the spelling used in
ban addand whether the duration and unit were accepted. - Make sure a hosting panel has not redirected you to a different game instance or replaced the configuration on restart.
- Inspect the active
AdminFileNameandSaveGameFoldersettings if the XML on disk does not match console output.
Manual XML changes disappeared
Stop the server before editing, verify that you changed the active file, and make a backup. A running server can overwrite manual edits, and a file that was created in a different save directory will have no effect.
