A YAML error is fixed by identifying the exact file, line, and column named in the first complete server error, then correcting the structure at that location. Back up the file, make one change, and restart or reload through the supported workflow. If the file parses but the plugin still rejects a setting, the problem is a schema or value error rather than YAML syntax.

What a YAML error means on a Minecraft server
Paper, Spigot, Bukkit-based plugins, and many server tools store settings in YAML files. YAML represents configuration as a tree of key: value pairs. Indentation determines which keys belong under other keys, so one missing space can change the entire tree or make the document impossible to parse.

There are two separate failure classes:

Do not treat a successful YAML parse as proof that the server will use every setting. A misspelled key can parse perfectly and still be ignored. Conversely, a valid setting in the wrong indentation level can produce a syntax error or be interpreted as a different part of the tree.
Start with the first complete error in the log
Do not begin by randomly opening configuration files. Preserve the first complete failure before an automated restart overwrites the useful part of the console output.

- Stop the restart loop. Pause a service manager, panel auto-restart option, or container restart policy long enough to read one full startup attempt.
- Copy the complete error. Include the filename, line number, column number, exception type, and the plugin or server component named in the stack trace.
- Find the first configuration-loading failure. Later messages can be consequences of the initial parse failure. The earliest YAML exception usually points closest to the actual cause.
- Record the last known good version. Note which edit, plugin update, or server change happened immediately before the failure.
Paper can report an invalid server configuration as an InvalidConfigurationException. A typical message for a broken spigot.yml is: Could not load spigot.yml, please correct your syntax errors.
The wording tells you the file and failure class, but the line and column in the surrounding exception are what narrow the repair.
Identify which YAML file is failing
The same server can contain dozens of YAML files. The path in the log matters more than the filename alone.

A plugin error normally names the plugin before or inside the stack trace. A server-level error commonly names a root file such as bukkit.yml or spigot.yml. If the message names neither, search the full log for .yml, YAML, Configuration, or the exception class.
Back up before making a correction
Copy the broken file before editing it, and keep the original error log. A timestamped copy lets you undo a change even if the server rewrites the file during startup.
- Preserve the original, for example as
config.yml.broken-2026-10-14. - Save a separate copy of the generated default if the plugin has one.
- If the server is managed with version control, commit the working configuration before changing it.
- Back up related files when the error involves a large migration, but edit only the file named by the log first.
Do not delete a configuration immediately. Deleting it can make a plugin generate a new file, but it also removes custom values that may be difficult to reconstruct.
Repair YAML structure at the reported line
Start at the reported line, then inspect the parent mapping above it and several lines below it. Parsers often report where the structure becomes impossible, which can be after the original typo.

Indent child keys consistently
Use spaces, not tabs, and choose one indentation width for each nesting level. Two spaces are common, but consistency is more important than the exact width.

sibling: trueIn this example, child and sibling are both members of parent. Aligning either key with parent changes the tree.
Do not mix tabs and spaces
Tabs can trigger an error such as found character 't' that cannot start any token. Configure the editor to insert spaces, then replace tabs throughout the affected block. Looking at the file in an editor that displays whitespace makes invisible indentation errors easier to see.
Keep mappings and lists in the right shape
A mapping uses a key followed by a colon. A list uses a hyphen at the list item’s indentation level.

A missing colon can produce could not find expected ':'. An accidental colon inside an unquoted value can produce mapping values are not allowed here. Quote values containing punctuation, leading special characters, or text that must remain text rather than being interpreted as a boolean or number.

url: "example: value"For an unclosed quote or bracket, inspect the same line and the immediately preceding line. A single missing closing character can make every following line appear invalid.
Inspect comments and special values
A hash begins a comment when it is treated as a comment marker. If a value must include a hash, quote the value according to the parser and plugin’s expectations. Be cautious with values such as true, false, numbers, empty values, and strings that resemble dates; the parser may assign them a type that differs from what the plugin expects.
Look for duplicate or misplaced keys
Repeated keys can be rejected, overwritten, or handled differently by parsers. Even when the file loads, the effective value may not be the one you intended. Remove the duplicate and keep one correctly indented occurrence. A key copied from another section may also be syntactically valid while belonging to the wrong parent.

Error wording varies by parser and server version. Treat these interpretations as starting points, then confirm the exact key and file against the plugin or server documentation.
Separate syntax from plugin and server schema
Once indentation and punctuation are valid, check whether the setting belongs to the component reading the file. A configuration can be legal YAML and still be unusable.

For ordinary plugin settings, use the documentation matching the installed plugin version or compare against a newly generated default. For plugin.yml, attributes are case-sensitive and the file has required metadata rules beyond ordinary configuration. For bukkit.yml, spigot.yml, and Paper world settings, use the reference for the exact server version rather than copying an example from a different release.

Never move a setting from one plugin’s config.yml into another plugin’s file merely because the names look similar. Each plugin reads its own schema.
A controlled repair workflow
- Identify the file. Use the exact path in the log, not a similarly named file in another directory.
- Capture line and column. Put the cursor on that position, then inspect the preceding mapping and following entries.
- Compare with a known-good structure. Use the plugin’s generated default or a version-matched example. Compare indentation and key hierarchy, not just individual values.
- Make one logical correction. Fix one indentation block, missing colon, quote, or value type at a time. Avoid reformatting the whole file during diagnosis.
- Save a new backup. Keep the pre-change file and note exactly what changed.
- Restart or reload through the supported path. Use the server’s normal restart procedure or the plugin’s documented reload command. A generic reload can leave some plugins with old values or partially initialized state.
- Read the complete load attempt. Confirm that the original exception is gone, then check for warnings about unknown keys or invalid values.
- Repeat only after isolating the result. If another error appears, treat it as a new diagnostic event rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
When testing a live server, warn players before a restart and avoid editing while the process is writing the same file. A stopped server is the safest state for manual changes.
When manual editing is not the best recovery
Restore the last known-good backup
Rollback is fastest when the server worked before a recent edit and the error points to that file. Restore the backup, start the server, and then reapply changes one at a time. Keep the broken copy so you can identify the exact alteration later.
Regenerate a default configuration
If the file is heavily damaged or its structure is unknown, move it out of the active directory while the server is stopped, then let the plugin or server generate a fresh default on the next supported startup. Do not overwrite the only copy. Compare the new file with the old one and re-enter custom values carefully; keys may have changed between versions.
Use a clean version-matched file
A default from a different plugin or Minecraft version may contain obsolete keys or omit new ones. The replacement must come from the installed component and version whenever possible. After copying, review paths, permissions, world names, ports, and other installation-specific values before starting the server.

An editor or YAML validator can catch indentation and punctuation before a restart, but it is only a preliminary check. Different Minecraft components may use parser settings that differ from a general-purpose validator, and no validator can confirm a plugin’s schema.

A successful result means only that this parser accepted the document; still start the server through its normal workflow and inspect the log for schema warnings. Do not install software on a production server solely to validate one file when restoring a known-good default is safer.
File-specific troubleshooting branches
A plugin config.yml fails
- Confirm the plugin name and file path in the stack trace.
- Compare the file with the default generated by the same plugin version.
- Check lists, permission nodes, world names, messages, and booleans for the documented type.
- If the plugin was upgraded, read its migration notes and regenerate only after preserving custom values.
plugin.yml fails
This file is plugin metadata, not an ordinary user preference file. Check required attributes, capitalization, command declarations, dependency names, and indentation. If the file is inside a plugin archive, obtain a corrected build from the plugin author rather than editing a packaged file as a permanent solution.
spigot.yml or bukkit.yml fails
Stop the server, restore the last known-good root configuration if available, and compare the damaged section with the reference for the installed server version. A malformed root file can block the entire server, so do not troubleshoot it as though it were an isolated plugin setting.
A Paper world configuration fails
Verify which world and configuration file the message names. World-specific settings can differ from global server settings. Preserve the world directory before replacing a file, and use the Paper documentation for that release when deciding whether a key is current.
What to do when the server still will not start
- Stop the process completely and verify that no second instance is writing the file.
- Restore the last known-good copy of the exact file named in the earliest error.
- Start with that copy and confirm whether the failure disappears.
- If it starts, reapply edits in small groups, restarting after each group.
- If it still fails with the backup, check whether the log names a different file or a plugin compatibility problem; the original YAML error may no longer be the active issue.
- If a freshly generated default starts successfully, migrate custom values section by section rather than replacing the new file wholesale.
Do not hide the problem by deleting every configuration file or suppressing the exception. That can remove data and make it harder to determine which file actually caused the failure.
Prevent future YAML failures
- Use an editor that displays tabs and spaces, and configure it to insert spaces for YAML.
- Change one related setting at a time and restart through the supported workflow.
- Keep timestamped backups or version control for the server root and plugin configuration directories.
- Copy the original error log before changing a file.
- Keep comments that explain unusual values, but verify that comment characters are not accidentally part of a value.
- After upgrades, compare generated defaults and read version-specific migration notes before adding old keys to new files.
- Test risky changes on a copy of the server or during a maintenance window.
- Review warnings after a successful parse; “server started” does not guarantee every option was accepted.

The reliable pattern is always the same: identify the exact file, repair the YAML tree before changing settings, verify the component’s schema separately, and test one controlled change at a time.
