Yes—you can move a Windows/Steam Palworld co-op world to a dedicated server by copying the complete world folder and pointing the server at it. The critical exception is the original co-op host: co-op commonly stores that character under a placeholder identity, so the host may see character creation after the move unless the player save is remapped to the account identity used by the dedicated server.

Make two untouched backups before changing anything. The procedure below covers Steam/Windows, PC Game Pass/Xbox-app saves, console limitations, Xbox connection rules, and the checks that catch an incomplete migration.

Palworld’s save format, identity behavior, server settings and cross-play support can change with game updates. This guide describes the documented migration pattern and does not assume a particular current game or server build; keep the client and dedicated server on compatible versions and verify any conversion tool’s release notes before using it.

What moves—and what you need first

A migration is a file-copy and configuration operation, not an in-game export. A complete world folder normally contains the world state and player data, including Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, the Players directory and companion files. Copying only Level.sav can omit characters, inventories, guild membership or progression.

The world folder is the unit you should preserve. Do not cherry-pick files because the server needs the matching world metadata and player records. A successful copy also gives you a reversible path: if a setting, identity repair or version change causes trouble, stop the server and return to an untouched copy rather than repeatedly modifying the live save.

Required access

  • Access to the PC that owns the co-op save, or to an extracted PC-readable copy of the save.
  • File access to the dedicated server’s Palworld installation and settings.
  • Enough storage for the world folder plus at least two separate backups.
  • A client and server on compatible Palworld versions. Do not edit the only copy while troubleshooting.
  • A way to stop the game and server completely before copying. Files still being written can leave a partial or inconsistent backup.

Where each platform keeps the source

Source Save location or limitation Extra work
Windows/Steam co-op %LocalAppData%PalSavedSaveGames<SteamID64><world-folder> Copy the complete world folder, then repair the former host’s identity.
PC Game Pass/Xbox app %LOCALAPPDATA%PackagesPocketpairInc.Palworld_ad4psfrxyesvtSystemAppDatawgs Extract and convert the WGS container into normal save files before importing.
World hosted directly on Xbox or PlayStation Not exposed as a normal player-copyable folder. Obtain a supported PC-readable export or move the world to a PC-hosted environment first.
Console players joining a PC-hosted world The readable save remains on the PC host. Use the PC host’s files; console participation does not itself make the save inaccessible.

Before copying: identify the save and freeze changes

Have everyone leave the co-op session, load the world one final time, allow the game to save, and exit normally. If several worlds are present, do not guess from an abbreviated folder name. Use the latest modification time on each folder’s Level.sav, then compare the in-game world name where possible. This avoids importing an older campaign while the current one remains untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copy the selected folder to two different backup locations. One should remain completely untouched; the second can be used as a working copy for conversion or identity repair. Label the copies clearly with the world name and date so nobody mistakes a converted or edited copy for the original. Keep the source until the former host and a guest have both completed the post-migration checks.

Move a Windows/Steam co-op world

  1. Create rollback copies. Start the co-op world once, wait for a save, exit Palworld normally, and close any server or game process that could still write to the files. Locate the world folder under %LocalAppData%PalSavedSaveGames<SteamID64>. Copy the entire folder to two different backup locations. Keep one backup untouched and do not perform identity edits on it.
  2. Identify the correct world. If several folders exist, compare each folder’s Level.sav modification time after the final play session. Confirm the in-game world name where possible. The folder selected for import must be the campaign you just backed up.
  3. Prepare the dedicated server. Start the dedicated server once so it creates its normal directory tree, then stop it before replacing files. Confirm that the server build and the players’ game builds are compatible. Starting with an empty server first makes a misplaced import easier to diagnose.
  4. Copy the complete folder. Place the backed-up world folder directly inside Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ on the dedicated server. Preserve the folder’s contents and structure, including Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, Players/ and every companion file. Do not nest it one directory deeper and do not rename individual save files.
  5. Set the server’s world name. In the dedicated server configuration, set DedicatedServerName=<copied-world-folder-name>. The value must match the imported folder name exactly, including capitalization and any numbers. A mismatch commonly causes the server to start a new, empty world.
  6. Decide which world settings should win. If the dedicated server’s configuration should replace the old co-op settings, first back up WorldOption.sav and then remove that file from the imported copy. If you want the co-op world’s saved options, retain it. Never delete the only copy: keep the original file in a rollback backup so you can restore it if settings or progression behave unexpectedly.
  7. Repair the former host’s identity before inviting the group. Co-op commonly stores the host under a placeholder player identity. A dedicated server expects the account’s actual identity, so copy-only migration can leave the world, bases, Pals and guest characters intact while showing the former host the character-creation screen. Use a maintained save-fix or identity-remapping workflow appropriate to the current Palworld version to map that placeholder player save to the host’s dedicated-server account ID. Keep the untouched backup until the host has joined successfully.
  8. Run a controlled validation. Start the server and join first with the former host, then with one guest. Check the character inventory, guild membership, bases, Pals, map progression and the intended world settings. Only after those checks pass should you retire the co-op instance or overwrite any backup.

Understanding the folder and account details

The source path includes a SteamID64, while the imported server path uses the fixed 0 directory. Those are different parts of the procedure: do not copy the outer SteamID64 directory as a substitute for the world folder, and do not place the world folder beside 0. The folder whose contents include Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav and Players/ is the folder whose name belongs in DedicatedServerName.

Keep capitalization, punctuation and numbers in that folder name unchanged when entering the setting. If you choose to rename the folder for organization, rename it before configuring the server and use the new name consistently. A mismatch between the directory and setting is more likely to create an empty world than to produce a clear error.

Fix the original co-op host’s character

Why the host is different

Guests generally keep their own player saves when the complete folder is moved. The original host is the special case because co-op can assign the host a placeholder identity rather than the account identity a dedicated server uses. The server therefore sees the world but cannot associate that player save with the joining account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the failure looks like

The most recognizable symptom is a character-creation screen for the former host even though the bases, Pals, inventory-related files and guest characters are present. Do not create a replacement character on the only imported copy; doing so can complicate recovery and overwrite the evidence needed for a remap.

Safe repair sequence

  1. Stop the dedicated server and restore or duplicate the imported world so you have a fresh rollback point.
  2. Use a currently maintained save-fix or identity-remapping tool, or a current manual procedure, that explicitly supports the Palworld version you are running.
  3. Map the co-op host’s placeholder player save to the account ID used when that player joins the dedicated server. Leave guest player files unchanged unless the tool’s documented procedure requires otherwise.
  4. Start the server and have only the former host join. Confirm the expected character, inventory, guild and base ownership.
  5. Invite a guest and verify that the guest’s character and progression remain intact. Keep the original backups until both tests pass.

Tool maintenance changes faster than the underlying folder pattern. Check a converter or save-fix project’s maintenance date, release notes, version compatibility, licensing and security before operating on a production save. Never download an unmaintained utility and test it against your only backup.

Apply dedicated-server settings deliberately

The imported world can carry its prior options in WorldOption.sav. Decide before launch whether the server should inherit those co-op settings or use its own configuration. To make the dedicated server’s settings take precedence, stop the server, back up the imported WorldOption.sav, remove it from the imported folder, and then start the server with the intended configuration. If the result is wrong, stop the server and restore the backed-up file rather than experimenting on the original co-op copy.

Make this decision before inviting players so a change in difficulty or other world options is not mistaken for lost progression. Treat the removed file as part of your rollback set, alongside the original world folder. A settings change should never require sacrificing the ability to restore the co-op state.

Move a PC Game Pass or Xbox-app save

Game Pass/Xbox-app saves are stored in a WGS container rather than the normal Steam-style world directory. The source area is %LOCALAPPDATA%PackagesPocketpairInc.Palworld_ad4psfrxyesvtSystemAppDatawgs. Copying that container directly to a server will not produce usable .sav files.

  1. Finish a final save, exit the game and create two independent backups of the WGS data.
  2. Use a maintained WGS extractor/converter that supports your current Palworld version. Extract the data into a normal world folder containing Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, Players/ and the other companion files.
  3. Review the converter’s maintenance date, release notes and compatibility before processing the only readable copy. Converter support can change with game updates.
  4. Follow the Steam/Windows import sequence: place the converted folder in Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, set DedicatedServerName to the exact folder name, decide whether to remove WorldOption.sav, and repair the former host identity if the host receives character creation.
  5. Validate with the former host and one guest before deleting any source or backup data.

Conversion is a separate risk from server upload. Keep the untouched WGS backup and perform extraction on the second copy. If the converter produces no normal world folder, missing Players/ data or unreadable files, stop there and do not upload the result as though it were complete.

Console-hosted worlds and Xbox connections

A world hosted directly on a console

A world hosted on an Xbox or PlayStation console is not exposed through a file system that a player can manually copy. This procedure therefore cannot start from a console-only host save. You need a supported PC-readable export or must move the world to a PC-hosted environment before attempting file migration.

Console players joining a PC-hosted dedicated server

A console player’s participation does not make a PC host’s save inaccessible; the readable files remain on the PC. Connection rules are separate from save migration. Palworld’s official Xbox dedicated-server documentation states: “On Xbox, you cannot connect by entering an IP address.” When that configuration applies, Xbox players should use the community-server list rather than attempting direct IP entry. Check the current official instructions because labels and cross-play behavior can change.

Plan the connection test separately from the file test. First confirm that the former host can load the expected character and that the world is populated. Then have the Xbox player locate the server through the documented community-server route. A failed console connection does not by itself prove that the save import failed.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Recovery
The server starts an empty world. The folder is nested incorrectly, or DedicatedServerName does not exactly match the folder name. Stop the server. Confirm the world folder is directly under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/, then copy the exact folder name into the setting. Check that Level.sav is inside that folder.
The former host sees character creation. The co-op placeholder player was not remapped to the dedicated-server account ID. Stop the server, restore a clean backup, perform the host identity-fix step with a version-compatible workflow, and test the host before inviting others.
Guest characters or progression are missing. Only part of the world was copied, especially a missing Players/ directory, or the wrong world folder was selected. Recheck the latest-modified Level.sav, recopy the complete folder from the untouched backup and validate with a guest.
Game Pass files are unreadable. The WGS container was copied without extraction and conversion. Return to the backed-up WGS data and use a maintained converter to produce a normal world folder before server upload.
Old world settings keep overriding server settings. WorldOption.sav remains in the imported copy. Back up that file, remove it from the imported copy if the server should control options, then restart and test. Restore it if rollback is needed.
Xbox cannot connect by IP. Xbox dedicated-server joining uses the community-server-list method in the documented configuration. Have the Xbox player find the server through the community-server list and follow the current official Xbox instructions.

Choose self-hosting or a managed server

The save-copy steps are the same in principle, but the practical choice depends on access, maintenance and support. A managed service is useful only if it permits the operations this migration requires.

Decision point Self-hosted machine Managed Palworld server
File access You control the complete world folder and can edit settings directly. Confirm that the control panel permits full-folder upload, download and replacement.
Version control You choose when to update and can align client and server versions. Confirm how quickly the provider supports a new Palworld release and whether version selection is possible.
Backups You must schedule, verify and store snapshots yourself. Check whether automated snapshots exist, how long they are retained and whether you can download one.
Identity repair You perform the host remap and recovery yourself. Ask whether support can help with a host-character migration issue without altering the only copy.
Platform access You must configure networking and confirm support for the Steam, Game Pass and Xbox players in your group. Verify supported platforms, cross-play behavior and Xbox community-list requirements before paying.
Cost and effort No separate hosting bill, but you provide uptime, hardware, network exposure and maintenance time. Recurring cost in exchange for infrastructure and potentially simpler uptime and backups.

Before uploading a save to any provider, confirm its current Palworld version support, geography, upload limits, backup download process and permissions. A server that cannot accept the complete folder or let you restore it is a poor fit for this migration.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Ask specifically whether you can stop the instance before replacing files, browse the Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ directory, and set DedicatedServerName. Also ask how snapshots are restored and whether support will preserve the original upload while investigating a host-identity issue. These details matter more than a low headline price if the service cannot recover a bad import.

Final migration checklist

  • The co-op world was loaded once and allowed to save before shutdown.
  • Two separate backups contain the entire original world folder or original WGS data.
  • The selected folder is the correct campaign and contains Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, Players/ and companion files.
  • The imported folder sits directly in Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/.
  • DedicatedServerName exactly matches the copied folder name.
  • You deliberately retained or removed WorldOption.sav and kept a backup of it.
  • The former host’s placeholder identity was remapped before normal play.
  • The former host and one guest successfully verified character data, guild, bases, Pals, map progression and settings.
  • Client and server versions remain compatible, and Xbox players know to use the community-server list when direct IP entry is unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a Palworld co-op save without an in-game export?

Yes. On Windows/Steam, it is a file-copy and server-configuration process. Copy the complete world folder, including Players/, into Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ and set DedicatedServerName to the exact folder name.

Why does the former host see character creation after migration?

The co-op host may be stored under a placeholder identity. Use a maintained save-fix or identity-remapping workflow to map that player save to the account ID used on the dedicated server. Restore a backup before trying again.

Can I copy only Level.sav?

No. A full migration needs Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, Players/ and the other companion files. Copying only one file can lose player characters, inventories, guild data or progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I move a PC Game Pass or Xbox-app world?

Back up the WGS data under the Xbox-app package path, extract it with a maintained converter into a normal world folder, then follow the same server import and host-identity steps. Do not upload the WGS container directly.

Can I copy a world hosted directly on Xbox or PlayStation?

Not through the normal player file system. You need a supported PC-readable export or must first move the world to a PC-hosted environment.

Why did the dedicated server create a new empty world?

The imported folder may be nested incorrectly, or DedicatedServerName may not exactly match its name. Confirm the folder is directly under Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ and contains Level.sav.

Can Xbox players connect by entering the server IP?

The official Xbox dedicated-server documentation says Xbox players cannot connect by entering an IP address in the documented configuration. Use the community-server list and current official instructions instead.

The Bottom Line

Back up the complete save twice, import the entire world folder, match DedicatedServerName exactly, and repair the former host’s placeholder identity before regular play. Game Pass saves require WGS conversion, console-hosted saves are not directly copyable, and Xbox users may need the community-server list. Keep the backups until the host and a guest have verified the migrated world.
