To find Firefly Bushes, search near water using the biome guidance for your edition. Collect a bush, then use Bone Meal on it to grow another in an available adjacent space. Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 describe different natural distributions, so the best search route depends on which one you play.

Where to find Firefly Bushes

Water is the key landmark, but being near water does not guarantee a bush will spawn. Search the locations described for your edition:

Java Edition 1.21.5

Look adjacent to water in Swamps, Mangrove Swamps, Badlands, and near Rivers. These are the locations listed in the Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes.

Bedrock Edition 1.21.70

Search for clumps next to water in the Overworld. In Swamp biomes, bushes can also appear away from water; the Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 release notes say they are twice as likely to be found next to water there. The notes do not give an absolute spawn rate or explain the measurement behind that comparison.

Minecraft’s official feature article recommends heading toward swamps and bodies of water to retrieve a bush, then growing more at home with Bone Meal.

How to grow more with Bone Meal

  1. Collect a Firefly Bush while exploring.
  2. Place it where you want it to grow.
  3. Use Bone Meal on the bush. Leave a suitable space next to it: Java describes a new bush growing in a random adjacent space if possible, while Bedrock describes placing a new bush next to it if possible.

If no adjacent space is available, the bush cannot spread there. Clear or leave room beside it before using Bone Meal.

What the Firefly Bush does at night

In darkness, the bush displays glowing firefly particles. Java Edition’s release notes specify a light level of 2. The cited Bedrock release-note passage says the bush illuminates the area but does not state a numeric light level.
