Season One is only the Playdate’s introduction. To get more games, use Playdate Catalog for curated purchases that install to your handheld, or obtain a compatible game from its developer and sideload it through your Playdate account. You can also install games over USB with the Playdate Simulator or Data Disk mode.
The best route depends on what you value: Catalog is the simplest store experience; wireless sideloading is the easiest way to install an independently distributed game; and USB is useful when you already have a computer-based development or file-transfer workflow.

What Season One includes—and what it does not
Season One is a scheduled introductory delivery, not a permanent limit on the Playdate library. During setup, the first two Season One games download. After that, two additional games arrive each Monday Pacific Time for 12 weeks, for a total of 24 games. The schedule explains why a new owner may initially see only part of the package.

Choose an installation path
| Path | Where the game comes from | What you need | How it reaches the Playdate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Panic’s curated store on the handheld or web | Playdate account with a payment card for purchases | Purchase is associated with your account and installs automatically | Owners who want the least manual setup |
| Wireless sideload | A developer’s website or a digital-goods marketplace such as itch.io, Gumroad or Shopify | A registered Playdate, account access and a .pdx file or zipped .pdx |
Upload the file at play.date, then download it from Game Library | Independent releases, demos, free games and games not listed in Catalog |
| USB with Simulator | Your own build or a game package on your computer | Computer, USB connection, unlocked Playdate and Playdate Simulator | Simulator command uploads the game directly | Developers and people testing builds |
| USB Data Disk | A compatible game package on your computer | Computer, USB cable and the unzipped game folder | Copy the .pdx folder into the mounted Games folder |
Manual offline file transfer when you prefer USB |
Catalog and wireless sideloading avoid direct filesystem access. Data Disk mode is more powerful but deserves extra care because it exposes the handheld’s storage to your computer.
Buy and install a game from Playdate Catalog
Catalog is Panic’s curated Playdate store. You can browse it in the Catalog app on the handheld or at play.date/catalog. A purchase made through either route is tied to the Playdate account and is intended to install on the associated device.
Before you buy
- Make sure the Playdate is registered to the account you will use for the purchase.
- Add a payment card to the Playdate account before attempting to check out.
- Connect the handheld to the internet so it can receive the download.
Purchase on the web
- Sign in at play.date with the account registered to your Playdate.
- Open Catalog and select a game’s product page.
- Complete the purchase with the payment card saved to the account.
- Leave the Playdate connected so it can receive the entitlement and download.
Purchase on the handheld
- Open the Catalog app on the Playdate.
- Choose a game and complete the purchase using the account’s payment method.
- Return to the game library and wait for the title to appear in the download queue.
Start downloads immediately
Panic says Catalog purchases usually install within 12 hours or less. That is an expected window, not a guarantee. To prompt the process instead of waiting for the next background check, open System → Game Library → Downloads, choose Download All, and remain on the downloads screen while the transfer runs.
Recommended Free Tools
If a title does not appear, verify that the handheld is online and signed into the same Playdate account that made the purchase. Refreshing the library and reopening the Downloads screen can make a newly granted entitlement visible.
Install a game wirelessly by sideloading
Developers may sell or share Playdate games on their own websites or through digital-goods services. Panic’s distribution guidance names itch.io, Gumroad and Shopify as examples of places a developer can distribute a game. An external release is not automatically reviewed or curated by Panic, so read the developer’s description and installation notes before downloading.

Check the download format
A Playdate game normally arrives as a .pdx package or as a ZIP archive containing one. Confirm that the download is specifically for Playdate; a Windows, macOS, Linux or mobile build will not install simply because it came from the same developer. Keep the original ZIP if the developer says the archive should be uploaded intact, or extract it when the instructions call for an unzipped .pdx.
Upload through your account
- Sign in to your Playdate account at play.date.
- Open your account page and select Sideload.
- Choose the game’s
.pdxfile, or the ZIP containing the.pdx, and upload it. - Wait for the upload to finish and for the title to be associated with your account.
- On the handheld, open Game Library. On earlier system versions, the equivalent location may be Settings → Games.
- Refresh the game list if the title is not immediately shown, then select the game to download it.
The account association is useful if you reset the handheld or replace it: Panic’s instructions say a sideloaded game can be downloaded again on a Playdate logged into that account. Uploading the same title again can create a duplicate entry, so check the library before re-uploading a file.
If the wireless upload does not work
- No Sideload option: confirm that you are signed in to the Playdate account rather than a different web account.
- File rejected: check that the package is a Playdate
.pdxor a ZIP containing one, and obtain a corrected build from the developer if necessary. - Upload succeeds but the game is missing: open Game Library, refresh the list and check the Downloads area.
- Game will not launch: consult the developer’s notes for required system versions or a newer build; the account upload itself cannot repair an incompatible game.
Install over USB
USB installation gives you two official workflows. The Simulator workflow is primarily for development and testing. Data Disk mode lets you copy a finished game package into the Playdate’s storage. Both require a computer and a USB connection; the wireless sideload route does not.
Option A: upload from Playdate Simulator
- Connect the Playdate to your computer with USB.
- Unlock the handheld.
- Open the Playdate Simulator on the computer.
- Open the game’s
.pdxpackage in the Simulator. - Choose Device → Upload Game to Device.
- Wait for the upload to complete, then open the game on the Playdate.
This path is convenient when you are iterating on your own project because the Simulator already understands the package and provides the upload command. For a game obtained from another developer, use the developer’s instructions if they specify a different process.
Option B: copy a game with Data Disk mode
- Connect the Playdate to the computer with USB.
- On the handheld, open Settings → System → Reboot to Data Disk.
- Wait for the
PLAYDATEvolume to mount on the computer. - Open that volume and locate its
Gamesfolder. - Copy the unzipped
.pdxfolder intoGames. Do not place only a shortcut, and do not leave the game nested inside an extra folder level unless the developer specifically requires it. - Eject the
PLAYDATEvolume from the computer. - Exit Data Disk mode or reboot the Playdate normally before launching the game.
Data Disk mode exposes device storage directly. Panic warns that careless filesystem changes can damage device software, so copy only the game folder you intend to install, do not rename or delete system files, and always eject the volume before disconnecting the cable.

Which USB method should you use?
Use Simulator upload when you are developing or testing and want a guided device command. Use Data Disk when you specifically need file-level access or are following a developer’s USB instructions. For ordinary owners installing a downloaded game, wireless sideloading is generally less error-prone because it avoids direct access to system storage.
Find games outside Catalog
Start with the developer’s official site, newsletter or release page. Panic’s distribution documentation allows developers to sell or share Playdate games independently and to submit finished games for possible inclusion in Catalog. That means a game can be legitimate and Playdate-compatible even if it is not listed in Catalog, but you should still verify the package and seller yourself.
What to verify before downloading
- The page explicitly identifies a Playdate version.
- The download includes a
.pdxpackage or a ZIP containing one. - The developer explains whether to upload the ZIP, extract it first, or use USB.
- The release notes identify any minimum Playdate system version or known limitations.
- The purchase or download page clearly states what you receive; some listings may provide a code, source files or a soundtrack rather than an installable game.
Do not assume that every marketplace seller offers a ready-to-install build, and do not treat independent distribution as Panic curation. If the format or installation method is unclear, ask the developer before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recover Season One games you are missing
If your problem is an incomplete Season One delivery rather than a search for new games, use the library’s manual download controls. Panic’s setup guidance says to download missing Season One titles manually through Game Library; on older system versions, use Settings → Games. This recovery process is separate from buying Catalog titles or sideloading external releases.
Check the handheld’s account and network connection first. If only some scheduled games are absent, open the library, locate the missing titles and start their downloads instead of waiting for the next Monday delivery cycle.

Organize a large Playdate library
Playdate OS 3.0 adds Folders and a revised Game Library for downloading, organizing and managing both Catalog purchases and sideloaded games. Panic says OS 3.0 supports storing hundreds of games. Its announcement page also says, “Over 1,300 at last count.” That wording is a dated count from the page, not a live total for 2026.
Use folders by how you play
- Create a folder for short-session games if you often play during commutes or breaks.
- Keep unfinished games separate from completed games so the main library remains useful.
- Group experimental or developer-supplied builds away from finished releases.
- Put games you are currently downloading in the library’s download view until the transfer is complete.
Folders change organization, not ownership. A Catalog purchase or account-associated sideload remains tied to the Playdate account even if you move its icon to a different folder.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The game appears in the account but not on the handheld
- Confirm the Playdate is online.
- Confirm it is signed into the same account used for the purchase or sideload.
- Open System → Game Library → Downloads and choose Download All for Catalog content.
- For a sideload, open Game Library and refresh the list.
- Restart the handheld if the library remains stale, then check Downloads again.
The download is stuck
Keep the device on the Downloads screen, as Panic recommends for Catalog transfers. Check the network connection and available storage, then retry. If the problem affects only one external title, obtain a fresh package from the developer; a damaged ZIP or incomplete .pdx can fail independently of the account.
The game was copied by USB but is not listed
Return to Data Disk mode and verify that the unzipped .pdx folder is directly inside PLAYDATE/Games. Remove accidental extra nesting such as Games/GameName/GameName.pdx if the developer supplied a folder that should have been copied one level higher. Eject the volume cleanly and reboot before checking the library.
The same game appears twice
Check whether you uploaded the same sideload package more than once. Panic notes that duplicate uploads can produce duplicate entries. Keep one copy and remove the redundant entry using the library controls available on your system version.
A game launches and immediately fails
Verify that you installed the Playdate build rather than a desktop build, then read the developer’s compatibility notes. If the game came from Catalog, use the account’s download entry rather than a manually copied substitute. If it came from an independent source, ask the developer for a current .pdx build and the minimum supported system version.
A practical decision guide
- Want a store checkout and automatic delivery? Use Catalog.
- Found a free or paid game on a developer’s page? Upload its
.pdxor ZIP through the Sideload page. - Are you testing your own project? Open it in Playdate Simulator and choose Device → Upload Game to Device.
- Need a direct computer-to-device copy? Use Data Disk mode and place the unzipped package in
Games. - Missing one of the 24 introductory games? Use the manual download controls in Game Library rather than looking for it as a new Catalog release.
Season One gives you 24 scheduled games, but it is just the starting collection. Catalog provides the curated storefront, independent developers provide a much broader range of releases, and the Playdate account plus USB tools give you several ways to put compatible games on the handheld.
